Best way to travel between Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur
15 years ago, May 21st 2008 No: 1 Msg: #35963
Hi,

I am going to Thailand in December and from Bangkok I want to go to Kuala Lumpur. What is the best way? Am I right in thinking you can get the train, but you have to change once? How much are flights usually?

What will be the best value for money? Reply to this

Hello Maria and Ben 😊

That is exactly right. You can take the train from Bangkok to KL but will have to change trains near the border.
Trains are generally less expensive than flying in Thailand. Take a night train from Bangkok to the Malaysian border to save money on a nights accomodation.
I dont know how much the flights cost but here is a link with the times and prices of the trains.
Thai Railway Company

Go to the train station to book the trains a few days in advance. They get booked up. You can book them by phone but they may not understand much English.
I saw a booking system on the internet but it seems to be much more expensive if you book online. But take that as a general rule in Thailand. If you want convenience you will pay a lot for it. Not a lot by Western standards but a lot more than you would in Thailand if do things yourself.

always check with air asia and firefly websites before travelling. they are both offering 0 baht fares (yes that's right 0 baht + taxes and fees of course) but you may fly for much less than a train ticket.

you won't miss much by flying anyway as the night train doesn't allow you to see anything on the way down and there are always reports of pick-pockets, baggage theft etc on the train and bus.

southern thailand is not the safest place in the world right now. hat yai is about as far south as you'll want to be. rebels are active in the south, public schools, banks, post offices etc are always targets. be safe, have fun. Reply to this

Definitely airasia. Notice that different date with different price and from time to time. Its safe for using your credit card to book nowadays, moreover is the most trusted budget air flight in Malaysia. Now even have direct flight to Perth & Gold Coast, Australia.

*If Airasia, the plane will arrive at "LCCT" (Budget airport, and you will see a lot of foreigner from Bangladesh, Indonesian, Myanmar...etc because nowadays those are the main foreign worker for some industries in Malaysia)

*if you are taking MAS airline, you will arrive at "KLIA", the airport where you can see foreigner from mainly western countries especially Europeans.

From KLIA / LCCT to Kuala Lumpur, you may take Limo, it will cost you about less than RM100 (about $30).
*for some unofficial taxi or private cars, they offer cheaper price, BUT DO NEGOTIATE THE PRICE UNTIL YOU GOT A CONFIRM PRICING THEN ONLY YOU ENTER THEIR CAR.(Don't ever enter their car first)

Hope that those info helps!
Happy Traveling.~
