South America » Chile » Aisén » San Rafael Glacier March 16th 2001

I have just spent a fun four nights and five days on a boat in the South of Chile. Didn’t really know what to expect when we booked the trip as our Spanish is too poor, so we just took a chance. It turned out to be really good and we spent the whole time cracking up. When we first got on the boat we thought it was going to be absolute hell as we had to sleep in what was basically a bus seat for four consecutive nights. I am looking forward to sleeping horizontally tonight! The first few days were spent sailing down towards our final destination, the San Rafael Glacier. We reached it on the third day and spent the while day there. We were taken out in small speed boats in groups ... read more

I am now in Puerto Montt, Chile. Tonight we are getting a boat south into the glaciers of Patagonia. It is for four nights and five days but we are not entirely sure what is included as our Spanish is pretty shaky. Just been to the supermarket and stocked up on biscuits and wine, just in case! After leaving Buenos Aires, we travelled to Sierra de la Ventana which is about 8 hours south of Buenos Aires. It was a small countryside village with a MILLION stray dogs. Most of you will know that they are not my favourite animal, but they are even more scary when they travel in packs and might be carrying rabies! As we got off the bus we were met by two particularly mangy-looking ones. By the time we had fought ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires March 5th 2001

We thought we were really smart, having found an e-mail cafe for only US$1 an hour. The catch is that it runs at the pace of a snail with a bad limp! Oh well, I will have to keep this short... We’ve been exploring Buenos Aires for the past few days. Went to a graveyard which was VERY creepy. It is where all the rich elite of the city are buried. Instead of your average grave, it is full of huge family vaults, some large enough to be mini-chapels. If you peer through the glass you can see the coffins inside. Some of the more ancient ones had the doors open slightly and we were daring each other to look inside. Many had steps going down deep into the ground, and you could see the many ... read more

Here I am in the main street of Buenos Aries. We had a massive thunderstorm last night and it is still raining. It is still warm though so we are wandering around in T -shirts and shorts in the rain! The last few days were spent in Foz De Iguassu,on the Brazilian -Arentina border. The youth hostel was one of the best I have ever stayed in. It was out of town in the country side, and part of a campsite so had beautiful landscaped gardens and a swimming bar with a bar playing Samba music -very tropical. We spent two days exploring Iguassu Falls. On the first day we did the Brazilian side. We arrived on the bus to be greeted by little strange little chipmonk-like creatures with ringed tails. They were almost attracting more attention from tourists ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » Ipanema February 24th 2001

We have finally arrived at our first stop on our round-the-world trip: sunny Rio de Janeiro! After a 14 hour plane journey, we arrived in 40 degrees temperatures. We dumped our stuff in the nice air-conditioned hotel and went straight to Ipanema Beach. At night it stays really hot and humid too at about 30 degrees C. Rio is an absolutely HUGE city, with a marked difference between rich and poor. We are staying in a “nice” area, but in the outer barrios there is a lot of poverty. We have spent most of our time sunbathing on Ipanema or Copacabana Beach, and doing the main tourist things - Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado (Christ Statue). We went out with some Aussie guys one night who introduced us to the local drink speciality - the “capprioca”. ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Torres del Paine December 2nd 2000

Found an old triplog journal, slowly converting these to blogs. Seno Ultimate Esperanza (Last Hope Sound), the name evokes the feeling of somewhere desolate yet exotic. Arriving around 9 pm, the sun was still shining throught he clouds and illuminating the mountains around the sleepy town of Puerto Natales. Now overrun with tourists, travel agencies and Internet access, this once-remote town is now easily accessible from Santiago i less than a day. The town still retains some of its character with brightly colored metal-clad houses. dec 02 - Enroute to Puerto Natales It's been an eventful 24 hours, all traveling and still have an hour to go. Arrived at the airport yesterday to find that the first leg of my 5 flights was delayed, not a good sign. We ended up leaving nearly an hour late, ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota June 24th 2000

I was born in Colombia and I carry this country in my heart because of all the sufferings it has gone through. I appreciate the strong will and hope the Colombian people have to reach their goals despite the every-day struggles they have to go through to have food and shelter in their homes, let alone some hope to progress to something better... someday. I was very privileged to come to Canada and find the Church Life! Nevertheless my dear Colombia is in my prayers. ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island May 12th 2000

We travelled back in time like Marty McFly, leaving Auckland at 5pm on Monday and arriving on Easter Island at 10am the same day. Of course, we werent going back in time to save the world or anything. We were hit by the heat and humidity as soon as we got off the plane. A change from NZ, but probably nothing like the changes in weather we'll experience in the coming year. First stop was the YHA to put up our tent, then the necessary trip into town to get some money to pay for everything. Only the could we start looking for what we had come to see. Only we didnt see any Moai for a bit. We went past Ana Kai Tangata, a cavern at the foot of some cliffs with some old and ... read more
