this email will be unorganized and unedited. don´t have much time to write as well as my journalist friend loc. but here are my thoughts. this will also be long... (sorry augi, but you´re unemployed so you have time to read this). i´m just going to braindump... we´re having a great time in peru! i love this country already... so much culture, and the people are very friendly. i´m also practicing my spanish which is pretty fun. arrived in lima early at 530 am. we were looking for our driver, mr. sanchez, who was holding a sign that said "chi y lee" but we didn´t see him at first. he proceeded to walk in front of us and asked "are you mr. lee and miss. chi?". i asked him how he knew? he replied, "you look ... read more

Iquitos to Rio - 2 Months On New Years day I flew back to peru and a couple of days later flew to the city of Iquitos, a jungle city with no road access, and it was from here that I set off down the amazon. It took 2 boats and 4 days to arrive at the tri-border with Colombia, Peru and Brazil, the first boat was a large boat which held way to many passengers and too much cargo, meaning it stopped every 10 minutes to unload something but it was great sleeping in my hammock. The second boat ride was unexpected as I thought the first would go to the border but instead it stopped in Cabalocoche, a tiny jungle village where the locals surrounded me and some other travellers from Chile. After ... read more

South America » Chile March 1st 2004

This is the trip report from my trip to Chile back in 2004, before I started blogging everything. Cliff Notes Chile is a country of spectacular scenery, friendly people and excellent food. My three weeks there were quite amazing, and I hope to go back. I will try to describe in words and pictures the adventure, but it really can’t be done. I expected Patagonia to look a lot like Alaska. Simply stated, I was correct. However, when I was taking in my surroundings I never thought: “yeah this looks like Alaska”. One main difference is the number of fjords in Chile—many more than I saw in Alaska. Other than that the differences are almost too subtle to explain. So you should go to both and compare. Chile does have an abundance of wildlife, mostly birds. ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 20th 2004

Hola Amigos Last week I was busy job searching - I have a job already (starts in March) but am checking out all the options. I think I will take a job that pays a little less, but offers me free Spanish courses. I´ve been taking some, and can´t really afford it, so free ones is a good idea. This past week I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Great time, the woman there are awesome. The city is very European looking, lots of old buildings, etc, but the streets are littered with garbage. On garbage night, people would put there stuff out, but 10 mins later poor people (who are surprisingly dressed quite well) would tear through the garbage taking whatever looked like it might be worth something. Argentina is in serious economic problems, so we ... read more

Hola Amigos Here's the next update: If you are into mullets, you´d love it down here - i´d say at least 30% of the population has a mullet - and half of them are really greasy. The 30% doesn´t include the 10% who have rat-tails. Yes, rat tails. I thought they disappeared in the 80´s, but not here. I´ve even seen a few people with multiple rat-tails. Come to think of it, there entire culture is stuck in the 80´s. I´ve heard more Michael Jackson in the past 3 weeks than I have in my entire life. Other popular groups include: Culture Club, Elvis, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Queen, old school Madonna. 80´s music blares on the buses, the bars, the dance clubs, just about everywhere. I found an apartment yesterday. There was a teacher at ... read more
