Hello everyone! We´re in Colonia, Uruguay at the moment, having spent 2 great days in Buenos Aires. Great food, cheap wine, sunny & hot, and Jane´s fluency in Spanish is second to none! We´re off to Montevideo, Uruguay tomorrow for a couple of days, then back to Buenos Aires for more sightseeing and steaks. Not quite sure of our plans after that. Depends whether CHRIS FRY comes and joins us or not. (He´d be mad not to with beer at 40p a pint and fine wine at about a pound a bottle). This is our test Travelblog entry - not sure whether it works or is any good, so feedback would be great. Having a brilliant time but obviously missing you all. Love Mr & Mrs W xxxxxx... read more

Hmm, yes unfortunately I seem to have cursed the weather and am now grateful for a moment´s shelter in the internet cafe (where I´m sitting in a fleece and soaked trousers from the torrential rains outside)! I do have an embarrassingly crispy red nose to prove that it has been hot though! Didn´t think I´d be speaking French in South America but I have spent the last few hours listening to a Swiss right-wing ex-politician´s tirade on Europe. Interesting. Although aren´t you meant to meet like-minded hippies whilst travelling?! Hee hee - takes all sorts, innit? When I arrived in Punta del Este on Friday, with Maria, it was beautifully hot but it´s been overcast with sunny spells over the weekend. Fortunately rains have only just started this afternoon so, since I´m heading back to Buenos ... read more

Apparently it´s never normally this hot at this time of the year - I´m guessing it´s around 30 degrees, which is kind of perfect really! There don´t seem to be many specific landmarks or historical buildings to visit in Montevideo but it´s a nice place to be because the vibe is very friendly and laid back. La Rambla is the city´s main drag along the coastline. It´s lovely - and reminds me of part of Cape Town. I can´t quite believe it´s a capital city but then Uruguay is pretty small and only just over a million people live in Montevideo. ... read more

Having spent almost a week in busy Buenos Aires , we decided to 'pop over'to Uruguay for a day for some fresh air. This meant a boat trip to Colonia del Sacremento, which by fast boat took one hour and cost 100 pesos, but by slow took three hours and cost 50 pesos. Now seeing as the fast boat left 2 hours after the slow boat... (duh!) the decision was simple! Colonia was a nice little town with cobbled streets (painful on my ankle!), various dinky museums, a little harbour for the local yachting fraternity, and some nice beaches. Unfortunately not having brought our Driving licence on the day, we couldn´t hire a moped to get to the Bullring, but seeing as neither of us had driven one before, probably a good thing! On the way ... read more

Escaped busy BA for calm Colonia! Pretty little old town here, although strangely seems to have very few current residents. Unfortunately it's a bit like a ghost town but with restaurants and shops dotted around for the tourists. Doesn't detract from pretty views out over the Delta though and could just make out lights of BA across the water at nighttime from the restaurant terrace! Don't really need more than a day here so am moving on to Montevideo tomorrow, which is meant to have a young, hip vibe. Will be staying with Maria, who used to work at Christie's, so it'll be great to see it from a local point of view.... read more

After two days in Buenos Aires (of which more later) we boarded a high speed ferry to cross the Rio del Plata which is some 45 km wide (!!) to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. Colonia is a historic Portuguese / Spanish style old town preserved as it was 2 hundred years ago (UNESCO heritage site). Narrow cobbled streets with cafes & restaurants in white-painted colonial style buildings under blue sky, spring sunshine, oranges & lemons on the trees, parakeets squawking overhead in the palm trees - what have we done to deserve this?! Today we visited Conchillas - some 50km away - with a Spanish speaking taxi driver to investigate the site of Pete's dad's birth & early childhood. We found the "English houses" and stone-cutting plant there preserved as a museum. (Pete's paternal grandfather ... read more

Jody and i decided to take a side trip to Uruguay ..sorry, my camera died right as we got there so i have like four pictures... we went to montevideo and colonia. they are very close to buenos aires. colonia is a small town that has the colonial town feeling from the 1700s.. not much to do there.. small houses, no big buildings.. the pace of life is a lot slower. and the locals do things the more old fashion way.. so we spent like 3 hours walking the town then caught a bus to montevideo. it is about 2 hours away. the drive was pretty. lots of green hills.. and cows and horses. like a country side. montevideo, in my opion, is boring. the capitol is very small. even though it holds more than half ... read more

Laurie arrived on the 16th to visit for a week and we had a wonderful time! We spent the first few days in Buenos Aires, went to Uruguay (Colonia, Monevideo and Punta Del Este) for 3 days, and then returned to Buenos Aires for the rest of the trip. We put quite a few miles on our shoes and a few pounds in our stomach's walking throughout the city and trying out some cool trendy restaurants (to include at least one steak meal per day it seemed). Laurie took me out to dinner for my birthday at one of the most famous Steak restaurants in the world (Cabaña Las Lilas) which was amazing...great food and excellent service (thanks again Laurie :-)) We also went out to a great tango show which was really cool, and eye ... read more

- Food: Mate drinkers galore. Chivito (big sandwich with beef, ham, fried egg, lettuce, cheese and bacon - yum) - Area: Big street market but with crowded animals, lovely thermal bath hotel in the middle of nowhere and very manky bus station. - People: As with Montevideo, I was ignored or treated warily due to being female and on my own (but where is my husband?!). Their Spanish less intelligible to me and mine to them - Weather: The biggest thunderstorm I´ve ever seen and constant torrential rain I´ve just realised how very long and detailed my entries are becoming now I´m on my own so can write more detailed notes! Is anyone still reading? Sun 10th: The morning in Montevideo was spent wandering the even more empty streets for the obligatory Sunday street market. Which ... read more
