Well, this was almost two months ago now! But, we haven't had the time nor the technology to update it. Cabo Polonio was great and one of our favorite places. We stayed in a "rancho" and you can see the pictures here...... read more

After the falls we made another over-nighter on a bus and upon arriving in Buenos Aires again got on the next Ferry across the River to Uruguay. We stayed in Colonia - the old town is beautiful - cobblestoned streets and well preserved architecture. It is quite touristy - but in a good way - so there were lots of nice places to go and eat, etc and little craft shops etc.... read more

After my fleeting dash from Punte del Este I arrived in Montevideo at 10pm and went straight to the Red Hostel after a subway dinner. Was asleep within seconds and slept through until 10am, having no watch helps with endless sleeping. Had a walk around town and discovered there was nothing to do within minutes, so pottered around the shops and hostel all afternoon. The disaster, the Aussies and Brits from Punte del Este checked in!! Uh oh, here we go again... Met a couple of Brits (Jody and Steve) in the hostel who knew the places to hang out in the evening and had even extended their stay for it! So after some beer, wine and rum while watching Team America we headed out, about midnight. Went straight to the best bar "Tres Perros" (3 ... read more

Well bought a bus ticket to Montevideo as told to go no way near Punta del Este... While on the bus I thought, stuff it, I´ll give it a try. So on the Uruguan bus found it even better than Brazilian buses. Same great chairs but also waiter service. So he brought me dinner and a drink (only fizzy water, coke or wine so I had to have wine...). Then film in English, which most people complained about but turns out he couldn´t fix it, ha ha! Then he came and woke me at 7am the next day, gave me my passport stamped and breakfast with a cup of tea. Just in time for my stop! Fantastic!!! Had to wait half an hour to change some money as no cash machines, and still don´t really know ... read more

The guide book puts alot of pressure on Colonia to impress, describing it as ´a superstar´. Initial reactions were somewhat confused as it appeared to be like any other small town. We left our bags in the hostel and set off to find the beauty we had read so much about. By the time we reach the water´s edge it has grown dark, the town is scarcely lit with small green streetlights barely illuminating the crazy-paved cobbled streets. A notable feature was the abundance of stray dogs which, for some reason, took a liking to me. At one point I must have looked like a proffessional dog walker with about five dogs following me casually down the street. In fact, despite it being Friday night, there are more dogs on the street than revellers. We have ... read more

We went to the bus station the next morning after breakfast. Breakfast was ok, but we met Terry, a travel writer from Miami, and she was very cool and gave me some ideas. One of the sites she works for publishes travel articles submitted, so I´m hoping I will something to say and they will publish it. :) At the bus station we had to decide where to go next. We are both incapable of making a decision so we spent two hours (!) looking at our options and narrowing it down to four main choices that consisted of going back to Buenos Aires directly or via Carmelo, another Uruguayan town. We opted to take the 1:30pm bus to Carmelo and then leave the following afternoon on a river boat to Tigre, Argentina with a connecting ... read more

Well my million mile bus marathon (estimate of course) finally ended yesterday, and another one is about to begin. As you may have read already on Jordans blog we leave tonight on a 36 hour bus ride to the bottom of the world. Jacky will be pleased when I find penguins (at least hope to). I had a bit of a wild, yet disgusting ride into Argentina, leaving Porto Allegre on Monday night, crossing the border into Uruguay around 5am, spending about an hour in Punta del Este, continuing onto Montevideo, then taking a bus up to Colonia finally jumping on board a ferry to Argentina. I broke any previous records I might have held by visiting three countries in one day (Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina). That really is not the whole story though because originally, ... read more

We all got up and checked out at 10:30am, and Christoph and I decided to get the 11am bus to Montevideo and Scott hung around a bit longer for the 1pm. Christoph and I chose a hostel in the old city near a site where he could get an "obscenely" large steak for lunch, but it turned out that this size came with a similar price. We opted for cheaper instead. Spent the rest of the day walking around the city, not being nearly as impressed as we wanted to be. We ran into Scott, who was with some new friends and staying at a different hostel. We agreed to meet up for dinner another day. Christoph and I decided to get ice cream at the 4th McDonalds we saw, and sat down to eat it ... read more

Well, Christoph, Scott and I set out for Uruguay bright and early with a 7:45am taxi ride to the ferry dock. We bought out tickets, got in a separate line to pay for our tickets, and then had to check in. It was the same process as for an airplane, which surprised me. The we had to go through a metal detector and they took my leatherman wave away from me, saying it would be waiting for me on the other side. The last time this same thing happened to me I was flying from Ecuador to Peru four years ago, and my knife was in fact most definately not waiting for me on the other side. So I was a little nervous and doubtful about the fate of this knife. In the meantime we got ... read more
