Being almost seven months to the day that I left the cold and rain-sodden shores of my beloved Wales for my Latin American adventure; it has seen its ups and downs which was to be expected. Some I have documented, some I haven´t. The truth is, upon arriving in Uruguay, after some heavy days and nights in Rio and seven months of travelling just a bit too fast from country to country, I was ready to come home - shattered an exhausted, mentally and physically. I had almost had enough, worn down by my own design. So I decided Uruguay was the place to take a break, sit back and relax... Well, almost. I arrived in Montevideo ,the capital, after an eight hour overnight bus from Porto Alegre in Brazil. I instantly liked Montevideo because it ... read more

¡Hola! We left BsAs this morning straight to the ferrylineas station without our big bags. The objective was to get to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay as soon as possible. I thought they had services at least once an hour, but it turned out we *just* missed the 9 o´clock Aquebus service. The next ferry to Colonia after the 9 o´clock was 11:15 am, so we managed to get two tickets before the line got crowded with Argentines and tourists visiting Uruguay for the day. Immigration is on the Argentine side, and it went smoothly. After securing our spots on the ferry which felt like airplane settings, we walked around the ferry to check it out. Many of the passengers seemed to be regular visitors, either Argentines or Uruguayans (often call themselves as "Orientales", as the full ... read more

I took the ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia and a bus from Colonia to Montevideo (Both provided by Buquebus). This taken longer than the direct ferry service to Montevideo, but was sufficiently cheaper. The journey was quite pleasant and I arrived at 'Tres Cruces' bus station late afternoon. Unfortunately the Lonely Planet guide does not show the station, so I had to ask for directions to the center of town. Mixing up 'left' and 'right' in Spanish made this very interesting and funny. Before making my way to the Red Hostel I visited one of the nearby ATMs to withdraw some Uruguayan pesos, and bought a ticket back to Colonia at the bus station. Staff at the hostel were very friendly, and offered me a free beer for being the first Hungarian guest. The hostel ... read more

When I enquired about excursions from Buenos Aires, the last thing I expected to hear about was a trip over to Uruguay. An opportunity to tick another country off of the list, and see for myself how different the people are to the Argentinians? Well of course I went! Two days full of smiles. Except for the beginning. I took the ferry over to the capital city of Montevideo and stepped into the biggest rainstorm I´ve seen in a few months. I was lucky to not be carrying around my big pack as I stomped through the puddles. I muttered under my breath over and over a saying that a friend from Vancouver once told me, ¨It´s just rain, you´re not sugar, you won´t disintegrate¨. And yes this is true, but it can still make you ... read more

Hola : ) Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, was our next destination. We arrived by a very swish, stylish, fast ferry from Buenos Aires - full of the elite people from BsAs on their hols. Montevideo is a lovely city, with many sandy beaches, on the Rio de la Planta sea. Compared to the hustle of BsAs, it is a sleepy city- but still has enough going on. The people in Uruguay are really friendly, but havent found any that speak English (not that surprising, I suppose, as we are in SA!) - this has been great for practising our Spanish. The night life in MVo, like BsAs, starts late and ends late - the old town is the place to go for good bars. We took a short bus ride along the coast (1.5hrs) ... read more

Is my mother reading this? Hola MAMA! We went to this little town called Colonia in Uruguay. It was the original Buenos Aires in the 18th century and the major trade port for South America and Spain. So the entire old part of the city is surrounded by white-painted cement or stucco walls. The trees all bloom bright fuscia or purple flowers and we stayed at this little Bed and Breakfast called Postada de las Naranjos (Hotel of the Oranges-and there really were orange trees) so you can imagine how beautiful the whole place was. there's nothing much to do here. Everyone seriously carries around thermoses full of hot water and little gourds for drinking Mate. Which is this strong tea from Brazil. Seriously...EVERYONE carries this stuff around....like their purse. The old Portuguese Museum I went ... read more

And in this section we cross the Foz, ride thru´a bit of don´t-cry-for-me-land, have a run-in with the cops, and win!, make the easiest frontier yet, discover another hidden treasure in Uraguay, choose the Devil over Eden, and more.... I was riding along this morning just contemplating some of the perfect pear-shaped bottoms I´d seen in Copercobana and Ipanema, in fact on nearly all the beaches, but in Brasil they are special....and I was wondering who was the unimaginative jerk, locked in some dingy office, riding his overneat desk thru´his boring life and came up with the sicko idea of describing something that has failed as Pear-shaped!...unbelievable...why not brick-shaped, or cuboid or flat or passionfruit-shaped..pears are so perfect, and in relation to body parts, absolutely perfect...if I was working on a project and it turned pear-shaped ... read more

Hello everyone! We´re in Colonia, Uruguay at the moment, having spent 2 great days in Buenos Aires. Great food, cheap wine, sunny & hot, and Jane´s fluency in Spanish is second to none! We´re off to Montevideo, Uruguay tomorrow for a couple of days, then back to Buenos Aires for more sightseeing and steaks. Not quite sure of our plans after that. Depends whether CHRIS FRY comes and joins us or not. (He´d be mad not to with beer at 40p a pint and fine wine at about a pound a bottle). This is our test Travelblog entry - not sure whether it works or is any good, so feedback would be great. Having a brilliant time but obviously missing you all. Love Mr & Mrs W xxxxxx... read more
