And so on to Colonia del Sacramento. It is a listed Patrimonial Site by the UNESCO as the most complete illustration of Colonial Architecture in South America. It is pretty. The moment we got there we felt we were back on the tourist trail as we saw back packers the moment we arrived! There were lots of locals also between the station and town offering us accommodation etc. We headed to one of the recommended hotels, got ourselves installed and headed off to see Colonia. It is pretty, it really is. You can tell I was inspired by the number of photos I ended up taking! There are lots of little squares and cobbled streets with the sea as a backdrop in the distance. This meant sauntering from one plaza to the other and soaking in ... read more

And so to Montevideo..... had a feeling we had entered a time machine. It is just so dated and stuck in the 70エs. At first we thought it was the hotel we were staying at - it was a mock style castle walls, everything patterned and in brown. There are photos of the room so you can see for yourselves when I finally get them loaded. We sauntered off to the tourist office to see what Montevideo had to offer. Apparently a walking tour of the old city to view all the different styles of architecturefrom Neoclassical to our favourite historical eclecticism. In other words anything which does not fit in to the other 15 categories they had - most of them we had never heard of. It is an old town though - the people ... read more

Salto! Yes it is not exactly on the tourist map it must be said. We had decided we did not want two 20 hr trips back to back between Rio and Foz and then to BA. So looking at the map of SA (thanks Roachie) we saw a little place called Salto on the way to BA with has natural thermal baths! Well two girls and the idea of a little pampering - decision was quickly made. We then realised it was in Uruguay and not Argentina and so an extra country was added! We got to Salto to discover that this is the place that the Uruguayans themselves come to relax. The water is indeed warm and very soft. (Not sure if it really is all that amazing but there goes!) After hosteling it was ... read more

we are asking ourselves why are we in uruguay almost every minute. our run of perfection had to end somewhere... our first stop was montevideo. it all ran so smoothly. so easy to get to the hostel, everything is so cheap, had a lovely dinner and crashed early after a day of travelling. the next day we got to look at monty properly. it was a staurday and the streets were eerie, empty. some streets were dead silent. we began to wonder what kind of natural disaster may have hit this town. nothing of note on the news stands. this is the captial city? the markets were closed. we became convinced that we are the only travellers in town and the locals are playing hide and seek. as the day wore on and on, it became ... read more

Uruguay - 25 Days 3 Dec - 11th Dec 2004 I intended to spend Christmas in Buenos Aires but was a bit early to go straight there so I decided to visit Uruguay with a friend and take the ferry across to Argentina. On the 3rd of Dec we took the night bus from Rosario, Argentina to Rosario, Uruguay continuing straight on in the morning to Colonia del Sacramento. Colonia was a nice enough place, cute streets and buildings so we stayed a couple of nights until heading to Montevideo for another couple of days exploring. We found nice colonial buildings and statues like most capitals have. From Montevideo my friend went home and I went to the Benidorm/Acapulco style Punta del Este, for a few days, to enjoy all tourist facilities. Whilst here I hired ... read more

To ease our return to regular backpacking we decided to stop off in Colonia on our way back to Buenos Aires. We got a late bus from Punta del Este and checked in to a little hotel on the outskirts of Colonia for the night. Exploring Colonia Next day we set off to explore Colonia. It is a really pretty little place with tree-lined cobbled streets and colonial buildings. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1680 but lost to the Spanish a century later. We visited the local tourist information office where we got a walking tour of the town. This started at the local church and led us to a drawbridge entrance through the old wall of the town. Inside, the old town is full of pretty colonial buildings with red tiled roofs. The ... read more

On the 23rd of December we took a ferry from Buenos Aires (the Buquebus - pron. Bukkybus) to the capital city of the second-smallest country in South America, Montevideo. The Ferry Crossing Much the same as getting the ferry to France it was a smooth and relatively uneventful affair. The queue at immigration for passport stamps and suchlike could have been more smooth - these countries really do need to create some kind of mini-EU where nationals need only to show a passport - but anyway, we got through whilst noting that the population travelling with us probably had an average age of over 50, and that their attire and fashion sense was most distressing (bearing in mind that the residents of Buenos Aires are reputed to possess a certain ammount of chic). Well, on board ... read more

The plan was to take the ferry across the Rio del la Plata to the little colonial town of...Colonia, of course, and spend a few days taking it slow. Somehow along the way I (suzy) got the urge to go to the beach and convinced Todd we should skip Colonia at first and hop a bus to one of the beach towns in Uruguay. Maybe it was thinking of heading home to cold cold NorteAmerica...who knows! He agreed, of course, and when the ferry reached Uruguay we hopped off, bought ourselves tickets to the popular beach resort, Punta del Este, and we were off. What was going to be a 3 day historic tour sort of thing turned into a week of sunbathing, swimming and your basic holiday laziness. We tried to stay at a hostel ... read more

I bet, reader, that you probably dont know a huge amount about Uruguay... It is a relatively small, but affluent country on the Atlantic coast, nestled in between Brazil and Argentina. It´s mainly agricultural, and produces huge amounts of wheat and beef.. Fray Bentos is actually the name of a cow town here! It was also a banking and touism centre for rich argentinians, until the Argy currency crashed a few years back. Still, it is pleasant, without being spectacular, and with good roads, clean hotels, and great food all costing not a lot, a really nice place to travel through. We arrived on a windy morning on an overnight bus from southern Brazil, at a place called Punta Del Este. Now this place, basically is the Monte Carlo of south america.. A mixture of high ... read more
