Finally I found myself at the Pacific Ocean. I arrived early in the morning in the town of Huanchaco, a short distance from the main city of Trujillo. I found and checked into a hostel before falling immediately asleep, I had arrived far too early for my liking. I woke after a few hours and dragged my tired ass out of bed to begin my first ever visit to the Pacific Ocean properly. At breakfast I bumped into a couple of guys I´d met whilst waiting for a taxi after the Santa Cruz trek and they invited me to join them sightseeing around Trujillo's wealth of pre-Incan culture. We jumped on a local bus towards Trujillo, jumping off at the beginning of a dirt road leading to the ancient Chimú city ofChan Chan. On the side ... read more

Huanchaco Hanchaco...So we have been here for a couple weeks now slowin down our travelin momentum. Erika and I both found some sweet volunteer job opportunities (we will explain them a lil more in depth) I am working at a dog refugee and at an after school help classroom called "Casita de Madera" and Erika is helping escavate mummias in the local Huanchaqita. And every wedenesday Erika and I teach an art class at the biblioteca..Who knew Erika and I were so artistic right? ha We aren't, but we tricked the lil kiddies into thinking we are. Anywho, where we are is pretty sweet. Its this nice laxed surfing village that hasen't gotten taken over quite yet by a rowdy group of travelers. The center of town is considered pretty rich in Peruvian standards, but the ... read more

Jeez, talking about a writers block... Ok, by chance really, I found out about this amazing historical site in the northern mountainous region of Peru. And again I had no clue that there were some equally cool waterfalls nearby and another cool site on top of that! So yes, I was a bit happy that the trip to Chachapoyas was more than worth it after all. Besides most of it being a total surprise, my four days there were pretty standard, which was a welcome change of pace after the previous week. As every road in the area, besides the one access road I came by, were dirt-roads I opted to go with organised trips instead of putting my bike(and me) trough any more hardship... The first day took us to the great fortified city of ... read more

August 18th Next stop was Huanchaco, a beach town right next to Trujillo. The long drive (starting at 6 am) was made even longer by an hour long detour me made due to getting lost. We drove down one road, back up it, down another road, back up it, and then down the first and back again before finally leaving that area by the exact way we had arrived. It must have looked a bit sketchy because we were stopped by the police and the policeman got on the truck, demanding to see everyone´s passports. We kept them all in a safe in the floor of the truck so it took forever to get them all out and then the policeman looked at 3 before giving them back and getting off the truck. It was ridiculous. ... read more

It was very early when we pulled into Trujillo, maybe 7am. And we took a walk into the main square. Trujillo is very pretty and pretty much abandoned when we got there. The buildings are all really colourful and its quite a nice place to just walk around and take in. We decided to stay a night as if we didn’t it would be another 10hour bus later that day. We met a Swiss guy called Jonah who we wandered round with and got breakfast with in the market. Lovely cheap chicken sandwiches and coffee. We then got a taxi with our bags to Huanchaco which is just the little town by the beach, its pretty much part of Trujillo. We were quite glad to see a beach but it was pretty cloudy although by late ... read more

Written by Elizabeth. Just returned to the school for the final time, after a good day at Kuelap Ruins! We arrived at the ruins after a two and a half hour drive along the death road, it was pretty scary. After walking for about 20 minutes up a very steep hill, in the blazing heat, snow at the same we were greeted by the Inkas who presented us with a tonne of gold each! We are now informing you with our new given riches that we will not be returning home anytime soon. The ruins were very interesting and we learn´t lots of facts and history about the making of the ruins. Heading down, we were back in the car park for about 2 o´clock where we were all put under an indurance test army style! ... read more

Written by Amy Sick of school already and its not even september, we're on the move again from Chacapoyas which is a disappointment really because we have found some lovely bakery cafes with gorgeous pancakes, fruit and chocolate flavour. We started our first mini trek yesterday and it killed the majority of us, however at the end we saw the 3rd highest waterfall in the world - Gocta Waterfall. Today we start another to some ruins and then come back, get changed out of clothes which have been baked in the sun with sweat and jump onto our first overnight bus of many. This one takes us to Trujillo and then we spend the day there, only to catch another overnight bus onwards towards Huaraz where we can hopefully all get in some good shopping before ... read more

We weren’t sure how long we wanted to spend in these Northwestern Peruvian towns. The only thing we heard about Trujillo was that it had two famous pre-Columbian archaelogical sites - Chan Chan and temples of the Sun and Moon. So in the end we just stayed in Trujillo for the day and visited the archeological sites. Coming from Lima, it took us about ten hours on an overnight bus until we arrived and we didn’t get much sleep on the journey. The sleep deprivation must be the reason that the day seems a bit like a blurry dream! First up Sarah and I grabbed breakfast and much needed coffees close to the town plaza. Across the street we found a place to book the trips to the sites. We were rounded up as part of ... read more

Written by Amy (I miss milk. As a personal tip, if your sons and daughters like milk, I'd stock up for them) So we have completed our project work in a small village 40 minutes outside of Tarapoto called Solo. It had about 300 people in total, and we slept in our tents in a community school like hut next to the river, of which we were so pleased to wash in after making mud bricks. Thats right, we made mud bricks for 3 days. This process was an interesting and eye opening one of which we have found out several things about our team members such as Amber being incredibly good at "stomping" the mud with her feet. very good. We also found out the true lengths of Davids clumsiness and has now been nicknamed ... read more
