This is how we crossed the border from Cuenca in Ecuador to Chiclayo Peru on a night bus. We then caught further buses to Trujillo and our final destination of Huanchaco. 1. We bought tickets for the international night bus the day before from Cuenca bus terminal. Ticket window was no 3 for Super Semeria. They offered us $13 for a bus to Piura or $18 to Chiclayo which was $2 less than the other companies Pullman Sucre and Azuay. They also told us there would be one bus whether Pullman Sucre said we would have to change buses. The bus was at 22:00 and stopped at Mancora, Piura and Chiclayo. A passport was required to buy a ticket. 2. There are different exits from the terminal to the platforms. Super Semeria buses left from exit ... read more

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the journey to a destination is often an adventure in itself. It is probably for that reason that it's called travelling, as opposed to holidaying or vacationing. Sometimes its tough, sometimes you're not evening enjoying it, but you just dig deep, grin and bare made easier by keeping a sense of humour. The odd bit of our subsequent trip deep into the Amazon and then on through Peru and into Ecuador was like that, but I was pleased we came out seeing the bright side of it all. So after a last minute scramble, Becky and I bundled ourselves into the minibus that had come to collect us on behalf of Deep Rainforest Adventures, the only company that floats foolhardy travellers 250 kilometres for 6 days into the biggest ... read more

Our past week has involved lots of travelling and lots of whistle-stop sightseeing. We have been to Lima, Trujillo and are now in our last Peruvian destination, Mancora. Having covered about 500 miles on bus journeys that have lasted between 10 and 12 hours each we can safely say this has been one of the less exciting parts of our trip. Had the stops in between been more interesting the travelling may not have seemed so bad but sadly Lima, Trujillo and Mancora aren’t really ‘must-see’ destinations. Lima Our experience in Lima was marred somewhat by having nearly half of all our clothes ruined when the local launderette spilt bleach on them. At the time this was very frustrating but looking back I guess it’s not that bad; we’ve been on the road for nearly 6 ... read more

Thursday 3rd April (Odyssey Day 146) So today we departed from the lovely city of Cuenca at 0730, heading toward the border with Peru. We were heading for an inland border that is not frequented by tourists, hoping it would not be too busy. It was a slower day today as there was a lot of work being done to the roads along the way, and some rather interesting detours. Sometimes it’s nice to have a truck so we don’t have to worry about silly little things like curbs, or actual roads. We made a brief stop for lunch in a tiny little place called Puyango. They had a rather large bridge, though apparently there is a petrified forest on the other side which they are trying to turn into a tourist destination to bring in ... read more

DAYS 38 - 39 After our late arrival yesterday we had pretty much a normal sleep ready for another busy day. First off we hired a guide for a tour of the museum, Lords of Sipan (English translation). The museum is a new purpose built facility that specifically houses the remarkable treasures of gold, silver, copper, turquoise, artefacts, ceramics weapons etc which were found in burial sites all along the North Peruvian Coast. The findings belonged to a previously unknown Moche culture that preceded the Incas by several centuries. The Sipan discoveries were the most lavish tombs found & only occurred in 1987 after one lesser tomb was plundered but others remained completely undisturbed & put under protection & intensive study by local & international experts. The tombs were much deeper than the Incas & probably ... read more

With a 4.30am arrival in a new area of Peru and once again feeling delirious from exhaustion, it was certainly an unnerving situation. Having managed to book a hostel earlier that which would accept us at the unearthly hour, we finally arrived at the front door after battling with the taxi driver to get us there. However, the drama wasn't over yet, as there was no sign of life. Knock, knock, knock...no answer. With thoughts of being stranded in a random city at 4am, with our all our worldly possessions in hand, Rich's blood pressure was once again maxing out. Eventually, with a heart attack narrowly avoided, the un-signposted front door finally creaked open and we were invited in and quickly ushered to our less than glamorous dorms. We squeezed in as much sleep as we ... read more

16 February 2104 – Sunday – Trujillo, Peru We woke early after a soundless and deep sleep and had a wonderfully hot and long shower in our ultra-cool open-plan hip bathroom. We then Skype-connected with the DeLaVega’s in County Meath, Ireland and met newly born Noah Samuel – congrats to Sarah and David, and also to Grandma Betty and Grandpa Paul! The brand new hotel Due does not offer breakfast so we ate the leftovers from yesterday’s bus journey and then we walked out to the main road and with the help of a young Peruvian woman we hailed a little yellow banger of a taxi to take us the 4 kilometres into the Plaza des Armes that is the centre of this city. Trujillo is located on the banks of the Moche River near its ... read more

15 February 2014 – Saturday – Piura to Trujillo, Peru We had a slow morning at the hotel as our bus to Trujillo is not scheduled to depart until 3 pm and hotel checkout was 12 noon. We packed, did some internet research and blog writing and had a late breakfast at the shopping centre (chicken empanadas and coffee) and stocked up on munchies for the seven hour bus ride, another 400+ miles of the Pan-American Highway. The first 200 hundred kilometres is straight and flat through the northern deserts of Peru. We weren’t expecting to see or travel through a vast desert of wind-shifted sands and sand dunes. This desert is known as the Sechura Desert and extends from the Pacific coast inland to the edge of the Andes. It was an amazing vista to ... read more
