So after a beautiful bus ride from Cusco to Puno we were excited to visit Lake Titicaca. Devon was still under the weather and was on day 2 with no food/water! A tough cookie, she still was eager to do an overnight stay with a family on one of the islands on Lake Titicaca. In the end, we opted not to spend the night on one of the Islands given the temperature and Devon´s illness. However, we took a nice, although touristy day tour on a boat yesterday. The tour visited some families on the floating islands and a woman showed us her home. It had a solar panel where she could power one light bulb and her tv. The islands are built on the roots of these long reeds that grow in the water. They ... read more

Day11: Sunday 11th December 2011 Our full-moon night on the white sandy beach of Lake Titicaca afforded a sound sleep despite the storm on the lake during the night. We awoke just before sunrise to the sound of voices. I looked out of my tent to the lake to see a group of small rowing boats landing on the beach. A few local women who may have been waiting for a while with sacks then loaded these onto the boats. When I tried to take a photo of the picturesque scene an angry boatman ran up to me and protested. It was then when I realised that they must be traffiking something to Bolivia which was just a few bays away? Maybe that was why the police officer in Puerto Acosta warned me that this area ... read more

Before we went out to explore Lake Titicaca we had one night in Puno which sits on the Peruvian shore of Lake Titicaca. Its a very small town that most travellers just use as a port for the lake. Lake Titicaca is famous because it is the highest lake in the world situated at 3811m above sea level. It is also the biggest lake in South America and is split between Peru and Bolivia. After our wake up call we jumped into our 'Limo´s' to be taken down to the port. This journey ended up being a bit of a race for which our drivers were then breathless from - see the picture. Our first destination once on board was Taquile Island. Here the native´s speak Quechua and the Island is famous for its weaving. It ... read more

9.11.11 To Peru we go With our new tour leader, 6 less people (glad to see some of them go ;)) and 3 new people to form a new group of 13 we were ready to head to the border (bolivia - peru). Early morning bus, then ferry across Lake Titikaka where we had to get taxi boats across the lake while our bus floated across on a small raft! Then back on the bus with a short bus ride to the border where we gained another stamp in the passport (another one Dad hasn´t got!) We were welcomed by sheep, pigs and tuk tuks (those wierd Tokyo motorbike people carriers) Oh and the indigenous people still wore the silly hats, which they copied from the English, when they came over for the Silver and Gold ... read more

Our first impression of Puno left us wondering why we had decided to come here at all. Puno isn't a nice city, but at least we managed to find a nice hostel owned by an old couple who let us order pizza and watch Oliver Twist in the livingroom! The lake The next morning we were off into lake Titicaca. Our first stop was at the floating islands, which were very touristy. Nevertheless it was interesting to see how they build the islands with blocks of roots and strands of reeds from the lake. Next, we were dropped off at Amantani island, where a nice family rented us a room for the night. We joined them for lunch, which was at least 10 varieties of potatoes (yellow, orange, white, defrosted, dehydrated, etc). In the early evening ... read more

Tina Writes We were expecting prices to shoot up as soon as we entered Peru but were pleasantly surprised when we got a hostel for S40 (£9) per night. I say hostel but this was a lot more like a hotel room. It was decent enough and even had an Ethernet connection to the net, so we had a really good connection. It did get very cold in the room and I had to have a hot shower to heat up before I went to bed. It was the best shower I have had in South America, with actual hot water. It was difficult to get out. There had been some sort of concert and parade going on in the square nearby all day and when the parade passed our hotel it was rather noisy so ... read more

Wednesday (Oct. 12th) - Thursday (Oct. 20th) Two weeks with my brother. Many people would groan at that thought but I was actually excited to see him. After 3 months of traveling and meeting new people it was good to see a familiar face and we had some crazy adventures together. Brendon (my brother) met me in Cusco after my Inca Trail trek and after I had sufficiently recovered from the hike we began the next leg of my trip. I should have known this ahead of time since I was with Brendon, but from the beginning nothing really went according to plan (if what we had could even be called a plan.) First stop was Puno in southern Peru. It's not that pretty of a city but the lake shore with the reeds and the ... read more

We arrived in Puno and got a cab to a hostel we found in the guide book. We dropped off our stuff and needed to go into town to get some presents for the family for our Home stay the following day but our second issue with keys happened. The woman said that the key for our room had been taken by the previous people who had stayed in there so she let us in with her key and propped the door open with the bin. When we left for town we obviously shut the door which locked it but as we left it got pretty cold so we decided to go back and try to get some jumpers...but the door was locked and the woman was nowhere to be found, we did however find her ... read more

This is our last morning in Peru! We´ve had a fantastic time and done loads of cool stuff. Yesterday, we were typical tourists and went on a boat tour to the floating islands of Uros where everything is made out of reeds. It was very clean, and even had its own kittens. Let´s go some place like Bolivia... read more

Friday 9th September After a rather luxurious bus ride from Arequipa, we have landed in Puno, on Lake Titicaca. Room is comfortable and has fabulous pillows! Our first job as is the norm is to head in to the main square and get our bearings. For a change we have arrived early afternoon so we have plenty of time to look about what yet again is another lovely city. The streets bustle here with the local women garbed in multilayered dresses and bowler hats. Lots of cobbled streets as you get in closer which really adds lots of character. The cars as usual, are a pain in the arse. Shane says: Yeah piss cars off all together. Just make pedestrian paths around these beautiful squares. Quite by chance we hear a big band playing in the ... read more
