South America » Ecuador » North » Quito December 25th 2012

We arrived after too many hours of travel in Quito at about 1am but fortunately we had an airport pickup from our hostel which was wonderful. We decided to stay in La Floresta which is just outside The Mariscal District. It's a safer area of town and the hostel was very nice. We spent a full day wandering the streets of the Old Town with beautiful plazas, street performers, and old churches. Yesterday, we did some shopping at a market an hour and a half outside of Quito in a town named Otavalo. The market was huge and there were vendors selling all types of Ecuadorian goods and food. The market not only took up the entire village square but branched out into the surrounding streets. These people are tough negotiators - everyone there negotiates prices. ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa December 23rd 2011

After a short stay in Lake Titicaca, we boarded our bus to Arequipa. After reading about unsafe roads and sketchy bus rides (due to fluctations in altitude and windy roads), we decided to take a more expensive bus company - Cruz Del Sur. This company did not hold back on security measures. We were lined up, padded down, metal detected, bag searched, and video taped before, during and after boarding the bus. We thought to ourselves: hmm, this has to be the safest bus ride ever or the most dangerous situation we have ever put ourselves through. Although, we felt our personal belongings were safe, we were not sure how all the security measures would make the bumpy roads more safe... but on to more interestings things. We arrived safely in Arequipa. The climate was warmer ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Taquile Island December 17th 2011

So after a beautiful bus ride from Cusco to Puno we were excited to visit Lake Titicaca. Devon was still under the weather and was on day 2 with no food/water! A tough cookie, she still was eager to do an overnight stay with a family on one of the islands on Lake Titicaca. In the end, we opted not to spend the night on one of the Islands given the temperature and Devon´s illness. However, we took a nice, although touristy day tour on a boat yesterday. The tour visited some families on the floating islands and a woman showed us her home. It had a solar panel where she could power one light bulb and her tv. The islands are built on the roots of these long reeds that grow in the water. They ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu December 12th 2011

We were so excited the night before that we literally only got 2-3 hours of sleep!! As we walked from our hostel to the plaza at 4am we were impressed to see that the Saturday night life in Cusco was in full swing. As we boarded the bus barely awake, we were greeted with a round of applause by our 17 porters (the Red Army)...yup, this was going to be a wicked adventure! We arrived at km 80 to gear up and set off. The weather was gorgeous and both of us were feeling better at this altitude (2700m versus 3300m in Cusco). We passed Inca sites, local villages, winding rivers, and beautiful flora/fauna. We met up with our Red Army a few hours later (they had passed us each carrying 25kg) for lunch...wow, we had ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco December 5th 2011

24 hours after finishing our MBA´s we jumped on a flight to Toronto to visit with family and friends. It was wonderful to meet and see everyone...we just wish we had had more time! We landed in Lima the next day at midnight and somehow managed to bargain for a cab in our broken Spanglish to Miraflores (trendy area of Lima). We were exhausted but excited. The next morning we wanted to absorb some of the local culture so we headed to Huaca Pacllana (an archaeological site) nearby…but it was Tuesday so of course it was closed…haha. But the security guard who worked there snuck us in for a few photo opportunities! For lunch we had heard so much about trying a local dish, cuy, (guinea pig) that we were considering splurging on a fancy restaurant ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires August 6th 2010

One month later...and South America has stolen my heart...I have fallen in love with Chile and Argentina! I'm so excited to learn spanish and start a proper trip...probably 6 months or so ;) Back in Buenos Aires I checked into my hostel which was right downtown with a rooftop terrace...excellent! The sun was shining so I headed out to explore the neighbourhood of San Telmo which is home to BA's main tango culture ~ it's full of cobbled streets and aging mansions. In the past it had really low rents which attracted artists but now there are also several funky boutiques and antique stores. I definitely wanted to augment my wardrobe with a splash of BA so I may have done a little shopping ;) Three wicked dresses and one trendy shirt later I was satisfied! ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú August 4th 2010

It was a tough decision when I had to decide between Mendoza, Argentina´s wine region, and Iguazu Falls, one of the most incredible natural wonders of the world. But as soon as I walked through the forest and heard the roar of the water and felt the mist surrounding me, I knew I had chosen the right place!! A few details to give you some perspective...there are 275 falls along 2.7 kilometers of the Iguazu River and they range in height from 64 to 82 meters high. Argentina has 2/3 of the area where you are literally within the falls while Brazil has 1/3 and you get a panoramic view of the entire scene which gives you a bit of perspective. It was an incredible moment to emerge from the trail and have your view immediately ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires July 31st 2010

After a 21 hour over-night bus ride from Bariloche the last thing I wanted to do was explore but as soon as we arrived I knew that I had saved one of the best cities for last...wow, I have fallen for BA! It´s been described as the Paris of South America with its plazas, parks, cafes, and architecture...it´s truly a beautiful city and I definitely have to live here one day (after I learn spanish!). We headed out shopping for a hot outfit for our tango lesson and first night out in BA. I didn´t really think my sneakers, black cargo pants, and long sleeve Joe Fresh shirt fit the scene ;) After that was done we all crashed for a nap (this is a must before heading out on the town in BA...this city is ... read more

South America » Argentina July 28th 2010

Up early for an 8 hour trek through the Andes mountain range to Bariloche...Argentina´s largest Lake District city. We had the most amazing drive through the mountains as we passed lakes, rivers, mountains, and villages with everything covered in snow! Not only is Bariloche a fantastic ski resort but it´s also very famous for chocolate...mmm, which I´m sure I´ll get my hands on sooner or later ;) Rented board equipment for both days that we´re here (obviously!) and grabbed the best steaks at the butcher before heading back to our hostel for a BBQ. Now I´ve been trying to limit my red meat intake in an attempt to be more healthy but let me tell you that was only because I had never had Argentine steak...wow... I had it rare with rock salt and a bottle ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas July 25th 2010

A fews days at the tip of Patagonia to rejuvenate was next on our agenda...we travelled to the German settlement of Puerto Varas (pop 32,000). It was raining when we arrived but the lake view from my room window was still pretty stunning! Our hostel was 5 older homes that had been connected by passage ways so we spent some time getting lost as we tried to find our rooms and then each other! I was in need of some tea and journal time so a few of us found a cozy cafe overlooking the lake and spent the rest of the afternoon sipping green tea, submarinos (a stick of chocolate melted in warm milk), and eating pastries. We chatted, played cards, read, and relaxed :) Wonderful day! Our day on Chiloe Island was very cool. ... read more
