Brett and I woke up fairly hung over since we were out so damn late boozing the previous night. Our hostel room smelled pretty musty and is in the back part of the hostel next to the “storage room” where the mishmash of wares that people have left or discarded just end up. The hallway is dark and a little dingy but the hostel itself is very friendly and inviting. There are lots of people staying here from all over the world: Japanese, Chilean, Canadian, American, Peruvian people all staying in the same locale. It’s pretty great. The weather here is hot. Easily 80-90 degrees every day and pretty humid so sleeping is a chore since there isn’t a breeze in our room and it gets fairly stifling with the door closed. It’s nice to open ... read more

We left Chicago in somewhat of a daze since I was half drunk when I arrived at the airport. Our flight to Fort Lauderdale was pretty uneventful however I passed out the whole time so it wasn’t horrible. We arrived in Fort Lauderdale and it was a tight connection. We had enough time to use the facilities and then to buy a quick sandwich and much needed Gatorade since Mattcam took me out and got me all fucked up the night before at cans canteen on damen haha. We sat down for a quick second and then our names were called over the loudspeaker to come to the plane as it was the last and final boarding call for Messrs.’ Carr and Cheaney. Ahha. We got on the plane and we sat, of course, over the ... read more

After travelling for 4 hours by bus, the 7 of us arrived in Lima, Peru's capital, and found ourselves a hostel in the centre of Miraflores and got a room to ourselves. As it was late afternoon, we chilled out for a bit and the girls and I went to the department store opposite the hostel, my first in South America, it was strange to be in that environment again, especially with crazy hair and my alpaca cardigan on, we must have looked a bit out of place! In the evening the 7 of us went to the cinema over the road to see 'True Grit'. This was the first time that James and I had been to see a film since being away and it felt like a real treat! As the weather was beautiful ... read more

Let’s see. A lot has happened and a lot has changed the past few weeks. I was in Santiago, Chile for almost 2 weeks. It’s a great city. It felt like home here. Even after just a few days here, I felt like a local. The train was easy to follow, great neighborhoods to visit and great food to eat. Of course, I have been counting my pennies since I started my travel so I try to eat-in instead. There are many great museums to visit and parks to wander around. We stayed with a great family in Barrio Brasil who took us in like a family. Ricardo and his family barely spoke English but we barely knew Spanish too. We drank wine and beer almost every night and talked about everything from politics to Wushu. ... read more

I am in Lima in Peru. We got here this afternoon. Its bigger than Santiago and Bogata, but we drove right through on the way to where we are staying. Some parts are really really poor. Like you see in movies with old brick buildings falling down with plastic and stuff holding them together. Mangey dogs hanging on the roof and running the streets. But where we are staying its really pretty and built up....lots of typical things like pizza hutt, burger king etc. Its got a really different feel here compared with Colombia. Colombia was cool. I wish we were there for longer. We have made quite a few friends. I made friends with a girl at the airport who is about 17 and is coming to NZ on an exchange in a month. ... read more

Well at the risk of sounding blase!! We have been here before, but it really is a little gem in South America! Perched high on a cliff overlooking a beautiful bay Miraflores is gorgeous. Lovely shopping, bars, cafes etc The only problem is that it is much more expensive than last year!! They are all beginning to cash in on the tourist market which is rather a shame! Weather is gl... read more

Due to the national attitude of 'Ah sure fuck it, it's grand' and general 'That'll do' when it clearly won't, it appears I myself have fallen victim to the above malaise. When I went travelling with Brian a good few years ago to SE Asia I brought everything. I mean it. Bangkok is the hottest city on the planet Earth and i packed my M65 Field jacket with cold weather liner. That got ditched. Anyway, this time I prepared little and didn't do a proper list as I normally would, so here's what I forgot; 1. Poo tickets. Or bog roll, whichever you prefer. 2. Swiss Army Knife. A vital piece of equipment used from gutting snakes to spreading Laughing Cow on rolls 3. My heavy Salomon hiking boots. I need them. I didn't think I ... read more

Today has been a lazy day and the ideas and plans to go look at Inca gold and trinkets in various museums in Lima proper have been put on hold indefinitely. I've decided to stay on here in Miraflores for a couple more days, more down to killing time than anything else, before I head off to Cusco on Monday afternoon. The bus ride to Cusco takes at least 20 hours so I'm psyching myself up for that, but the scenery at least should be worth it. I couldn't get a bed at Loki hostel in Cusco so I bumped myself up a notch and booked a cheap enough hotel room in the Antares; own bed, own bath, etc. Last night was Daithi's birthday bash here in the hostel. Daithi is the manager here, originally from ... read more

If you want to read a truly frightening book, one that will put the fear of the Almighty directly into your bones, you can do far worse than any copy of The Lonely Planet. Seriously, the only thing this heavy tome is good for is the maps. And they're shite. I received Brian's copy of the South America edition, and as a one time venturer to SE Asia I should have remembered how useless Lonely Planet really is. To whit, I've opened this copy about twice. Firstly, they advise against everything unless its something like going bowling, or to the pictures. Under no circumstances should one consume local seafood, salads, or fruit. In case you get the shits. Now, the only person never to get the shits by travelling to a foreign land was Kal El. ... read more
