We arrived at Lima at 10am and decided because the city was soo big to get a taxi from the bus station. We went with a guy that had a necklace with Lima taxis on it and thought we were safe until he took us to the basement where his car (not taxi) was parked. I don't know if it's just me and hollie but every Spanish person who shows any interest in us we assume want something or are trying to mug us. It's our ignorance really for not learning Spanish (a big regret of mine) and I am still thinking of learning Spanish in Cusco or La Paz. Anyway the taxi driver was as friendly as a primary school teacher dropped us off at the door of our hostel, even helping us with our ... read more

Big plans for our last day! We are going on a boat tour of the Pacific Coast, to an island with a sea lion colony, and going for a swim! We booked the tour thru Ecocruceros ($35/person; drinks and snacks included; http://www.ecocruceros.com/). We found their brochure in the lobby of Hotel Tinkus and walked to the office to make a reservation (it was close to the markets). We ate breakfast at El Patio and took a cab to La Punta in the Callao district. It was a half hour drive and we passed the airport after about 20 minutes. The cabbie dropped us of at Plaza Grau. We found the Ecocruceros booth and checked-in but still had almost an hour before the boat was scheduled to pick us up. We were both hungry so I walked ... read more

We had been is Lima for two days and still had not been down to the water. Today was planned as our "day at the beach." Only it didn't look to promising when we woke up and it was raining. The Pacific coast of Peru is blanketed by a fog or mist for most of winter due to landscape, prevailing winds, and sea surface temperatures(65f). The fog had been present in varying thickness since we arrived in Lima but today it was really thick and there was an occasional light rain. We ate breakfast, chilled in the room, and then did the only thing you CAN do when on vacation and it's raining. Go shopping! We finished our gift shopping at the Inca Market then had lunch at Monolos(mmmmmmm). We returned to our room and hoped ... read more

It´s our first entry while actually abroad! Today was our first day in Peru. We arrived here in Lima at 1AM yesterday morning after a 7 hour flight to Columbia and then a 3 hour flight to Lima. We actually barely made it since we almost missed our plane from Bogota, Columbia to Lima. While on the flight we were reading our travel guide about what to do in Lima and how to get into town from the airport and noticed the frequent mentioning to beware of scammers. It mentioned specifically to beware of taxi drivers that are agressive and will rob you. Then while in the airport there were multiple other warnings about the same thing. So of course, Hesam and I get out of the airport by like 2 in the morning, have no ... read more

We moved into our new hotel today, El Patio. It is a very cute bed and breakfast set back, off the main streets, in the heart of Miraflores. Compared to the Amaru Hostals or Casa Tintin it lacked a little in service and cleanliness but overall we were comfortable and happy. El Patio's best attribute is that it is quiet, a rarity in Peruvian hotels(especially in the big cities). The courtyard is pretty and colorful and the breakfast breads were excellent. There was an hour in between check-in/check-out times for the two hotels. We checked-out of Tinkus, stashed our luggage in the office of El Patio, ate second breakfast at the corner cafe, and went on a walkabout to shop and explore Miraflores. We found three markets one block off the main drag, Avenida Arequipa. They ... read more

Sunday 27.6.2010 day 256 Our last day in Lima We had our first altitude sickness tablet today ready to go to Cuzco tomorrow as it is 3300m high you can get Altitude sickness especially if you fly it take your body a while to adjust so it is better to take the tablets rather than getting sick and not enjoying out time there. If we feel ok after the first few days then we will stop taking them. We woke up and saw the F1 race in Valencia it was fun to watch as it was not that long ago then we actually drove on the track. It was very sad to see Webbers crash. After the race we went to bfast. Then we went shopping and lunch. There was a Argentina v Mexico world cup ... read more

Saturday 26.6.2010 day 255 A day of ups and downs We got up and had bfast at one of the local street café’s. The bfast is included as part of our room rate but the give us a voucher for a nice café and it was very nice. After bfast we organized our stuff to move to a lager room. Then we went to the agent to pay the rest of our trip and pick up our tickets. On the way we saw a old car display in the street. When we went to pay for out tickets the Agent wanted to charge a 10% commission and a very high commission on the tickets making it very high. Also they had a trick calculator so all the calculations ended up more than they should have. So ... read more

viernes, 25 de junio Our last bus in South America, at least for this trip. Not necessarily something we'll miss although it could have been so much worse. We headed for Lima, way too early for our flight in 6 days. Thanks STA. Coming through the district of San Isidro Lima liked like the place sh*thole was before it cleaned itself up a bit. Fortunately for us we had located ourselves in Miraflores - much nicer. And outside of Central Lima. It reminds of Recoleta in Buenos Aires i.e. lots of nice houses and BIG gates. There are no dogs on the street either, perfect. It's clean and restaurants are plentiful if generic. Could be okay. Final stretch and I got the sh*ts for the first time. Kenny died of less than this. sabado, 26 de ... read more

I went to Starbucks last Sunday. Now, normally I don't go to U.S. owned chains while I'm traveling, but I'm not gonna lie...I really wanted a Peppermint Mocha (this will not surprise many of you). Nothing sounded better on another cold, grey day in Lima than my favorite hot coffee drink. Besides, sometimes it's just nice to know exactly what you're going to get when you order. And so German friend Eva and I went, excited for the people-watching possibilities. We had chosen to go to a Starbucks in Miraflores, an upper-class neighborhood in Lima, one of the few neighborhoods where typical tourists go. That is nice sometimes when being anywhere else in Lima makes us stand out. Tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed girls don't blend in very well here, so we enjoyed blending in for a bit ... read more
