We arrived at Lima at 10am and decided because the city was soo big to
get a taxi from the bus station. We went with a guy that had a
necklace with Lima taxis on it and thought we were safe until he took
us to the basement where his car (not taxi) was parked. I don't know
if it's just me and hollie but every Spanish person who shows any
interest in us we assume want something or are trying to mug us. It's
our ignorance really for not learning Spanish (a big regret of mine)
and I am still thinking of learning Spanish in Cusco or La Paz. Anyway
the taxi driver was as friendly as a primary school teacher dropped us
off at the door of our hostel, even helping us with our bags.
The hostel (Pirwa hostel) was ok, it had a tv/internet room, half a
kitchen on the top floor and rooms that weren't bad, warm showers and
friendly staff. Although I wasn't keen on the fact our room door
didn't lock properly.
We headed out to Miraflores (a district of Lima known for being very
safe and tourist friendly) after getting a map
and directions from the
hostel staff. The receptionist told us of a mall overlooking the sea
if you walk through Miraflores so we headed there (as you will know
from previous blogs me and hollie love malls).
It took about 40 minutes but was all one road to get to the mall, I
couldn't believe the amount of casinos there was in Lima, we counted
at least 7 in the 40 minute walk. The mall was the nicest mall I had
ever seen, something you could tell had been designed by an American
and must have cost millions to build. It was built into the cliffs of
Lima and hosted some luxurious restaurants and bars. Hollie decided we
couldn't leave the mall without having a drink in Mango (a very nice
restaurant on the cliffs edge) as we were both sporting tourist attire
of shorts and t-shirts we got a hot chocolate to warm us up. We spent
about an hour at the mall then slowly walked back to our hostel to
change into warmer clothes and head to the supermarket.
The south american food hasn't been too bad for me but Hollie has
struggled becauses it's either
chicken, beef or seafood, so going to
the supermarket means that she can have something she will really
enjoy. Chilli pasta bolognaise was on the menu for tonight and meant
we could use the leftovers for jacket potato with chilli and cheese
for tomorrows tea. After tea we tried to watch Stepbrothers in the TV/
Internet room but the disc was scrathed to bits so we retired to bed
and watched Falling down on my Ipod instead.
The next morning we woke up and had the random breakfast they have in
Peru that consists of bread, butter, jam, yoghurt, bananas and these
sugarpuff things that tasted like coffee (not nice). We then headed to
Lima to book our bus to Ica for the day after tomorrow and look round
the city everybody told us to skip. I quite liked Lima was really
quirky and a busy city, it was nice to be in a bustling city after the
chilled out 3 weeks of seeing no more than 2 dozen people at one time.
Plus Lima is where I purchased the coolest jumper in South America and
our first experience of the Pizza Hut Mixed Meat Pizza Roll which at
4.90 soles is the cheapest and most filling dinner we have found yet
and very delicious (perfect at the end of our weekly budget). We spent
most of the day in Lima just walking looking up like stereotypical
tourists. Then at about 5pm headed back to the hostel for jacket
potatoes and beers, Hollie being very chugged with herself that she
had found a fruit beer (for girls) called Quara that tasted like cider.
The next day we were just going to stay round Miraflores and chill in
Kennedy Parque but a girl who was volunteering at our hostel said we
had to go and see Barranco while in Lima. Barranco was a
disappointment it had a nice alley that went from the center of
Barranco to the seafront but apart from that there wasn't much there.
We soon headed back to Miraflores and watched the Netherlands vs
Uruguay game in The Olde Pub, was a really good match the Netherlands
definitely have a good chance of winning the world cup. After the
match we walked to the seafront to watch the gliders setting off and
landing before heading to the supermarket for our cheapest meal yet of
noodles
and ham with warm bread and fresh pineapple for desert, budgt
starts again tomorrow can't wait.
We got up next morning and headed to the bus station for our 4 hour
bus to Ica.
Muchos love
