From La Paz we crossed the border into Peru. Our first stop in Peru was Puno, as small town on the edge of Lake Titicaca. From here we took a boat to the floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca. There are 42 floating islands where people actually live and we were shown how they build the islands and the houses ... clever stuff! Next we took a boat over to Amantini Islands where we stayed with a local family for the night. It was a bit bizarre as they didn´t speak English and we haven´t learnt much conversational Spanish so there were lots of silences! Despite being awkward, tt was good to see how they lived and eat real local food. In the evening we got dressed up in local costumes (girls in embroided blouses and ... read more

We drove into Lima on the evening of Sunday the 4th May. We checked into our hotel and Tasha, Joy and I went out for dinner then had a few drinks with other people in the hotel bar. Everyone was tired from the previous excursion so we packed our bags and went to bed. 5th May Today is the official end of my tour. I can't believe it, we have done so much and it has gone so fast. I am really sad to be saying goodbye to my great friends but very excited to be coming home. I have moved out of the hotel and found my own hostel because I have to pay for tonight's accommodation and the hotel is expensive. It is quite exciting to be going to a hostel by myself for ... read more

... read more

After months of should I and shouldn't I's when I knew all along I should have - I decided to quit work from the hotel industry to experience an early retirement (well for at least a year) get out there and see the world. Next on my list - Peru. In fact Peru/South America has been on my hit list for years and since I was located in Mexico, it was inevitable I would make my way south. So here I am - in Lima Airport at the brilliant Starbucks cafe - where one can find wi-fi free of charge for us 'posh backpackers with laptops'... I've never seen so many backpackers in one airport - its really surreal and no doubt I'll see them hiking in the mountains too... MY MISSION: of learning to speak ... read more

Immediately after we left the Galápagos Islands, we hopped on a flight to Lima, Peru, from where we would connect to our next flight to Iquitos------the beginning of our Amazon River segment. We deliberately arranged to have a couple of days to rest in Lima, so we were there for two nights. That should be perfect to have a little time to see a magnificent old city with so much history. Well, we discovered that the little time we allotted wasn't little enough! Lima is fading away and is being overtaken by a population explosion, mainly the masses of rural poor moving into the city and overwhelming the ability of the city to support the influx. Consequently there is much incidence of thefts, and every tourist or person who looks as if he could have ... read more

Note: this will be the last entry for awhile as my trip is complete and now I'm back home to numerous hugs and kisses from my girls. I crammed as much as I could possibly get into 3 weeks and I had a great trip, but 3 weeks away is a bit too long I think (especially for Mikaela, but for me too). Ann is awesome, of course. I've put lots of other blog entries up (for which you didn't get emails). Just click on my name and scroll down and you'll see the whole list (in reverse chronological order). Or, just go to this link: www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/gtimmermans/ and scroll down. Lima In 1532 the Spanish Francisco Pizarro landed in Peru with a force of around 180 men. Conditions were favourable to conquest, for the empire was ... read more

En 11 aar gammel ... read more

Unfortunately since we had to be in Cusco for the 3rd March, we only got to spend one night in Lima. Having listened to everyone saying how horrible Lima was, we weren’t expecting much and weren’t too worried about spending long here. However, Lima turned out to be quite a cool city. Yes, it was busy, noisy, and a bit dangerous but so are most big cities. The colonial centre was beautiful, and the food was great (much better than Ecuador!). Another day or two here would have been nice. img= http://photos-857.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v191/89/64/193107857/n193107857_35249665_4087.jpg center Lima Plaza de Armas, a really nice place to enjoy good food for an hour or four. ... read more
