Today was a do-nothing day. Well, not exactly. We walked, and walked, and walked some more. We heard an independence day parade going by, so we stopped a little while for that. Peruvian Independence day is July 28. We took a LOT of pictures today and I will post as many as I can. We walked all over Pimentel looking for a decent place to eat that was not on the beach. We finally abandoned that line of thinking and went back to the beach restaurants. Sometimes when you see the behind the scenes of these places, it makes you wonder how any of us survive. Hint: If you want to enjoy your lunch, don't check out the kitchen area. Anyway, we wound up having fish. Rose had hers sudado and I had mine chicharon style; ... read more

Thursday, July 24, 2008. Rose’s sister, Valeria, arrived the night before and stayed at our apartment. She and Rose had a great time unpacking the tons of stuff she brought with her, and deciding what went where. We had already decided that our luggage was overweight, so we packed as much stuff as we could live without and sent it from Lima to Chiclayo by bus. Valerie did the same only the next day. The Peruvians have a kind of neat system where they completely wrap the suitcase or box in what appears to be Saran Wrap. That makes them pretty much tamper resistant. To ship our huge, heavy suitcase to Chiclayo it was about ten bucks. Rose’s aunt Victoria is 99 years old and will hit 100 on May 8, 2009. She owns a grifo ... read more

We felt Chiclayo had somewhat of a European feel to it apart from the fact that people were really staring at us wherever we went. The main thing we did here was to visit the famous market, Mercado Modelo and its Witch Market section. The market itself was pretty noisy, lots of things happening all over the place. It took us a while to find the Witch section, but we managed to get there in the end. Here Brujos/Shamans (witch doctors) sell all kinds of things such as hallucinogenic beverages of the San Pedro Cactus, aromatic herbs, amulets etc. They were also selling all kinds of herbs and remedies for different health conditions and Voodoo dolls, Buddhas etc etc. Most things that we picked up seemed to be for "suerte" which means luck. At least that ... read more

Me enseñaron los alrededores y me contaron historias ... read more

No final do caminho estas pronto.E entras. On se demande ... read more

Today I saw it all. The good the bad and the ugly of Peru. It was the best day so far. We spent part of the morning at the university in Lambayeque. We then hopped a taxi to San Jose, a dusty fishing village about 10 miles from Lambayeque. The main road to San Jose is a bone rattling dirt road, the main road mind you, through some of the poorest landscape I have ever seen. The campo, or country side, is a series of adobe dwellings, most with no paint and seem to have only one room, kept very tidy as they have no possessions to “junk” the place up. The faces I saw in San Jose said everything there was to say about the current state of things. Most buildings were crumbling or worse ... read more

(I'm tired and will not have a chance to proofread this for a bit...read only if that doesn{t scare you) That´s what has become of us, it seems that is all we are now. Where once there were two thinking, sentient, human beings with emotions and feelings to share, there are now just two gastroenterological wrecks. For me this is hardly a problem, as a fellow for whom the word 'civilized' has hardly been used as a description, I had little to lose. Lycia, on the other hand, as previous to now well mannered young lady, has fallen quite far. The ravages of Bolivian/Peruvian cuisines are merciless. The four day Salar de Uyuni trip (a month ago, blog forthcoming, eventually) was where we were blinsided first, and by an enemy we never suspected...a pizza. It looked ... read more

My apologies to all of you who have anxiously been awaiting blog entries for the last four days- we have been in Cusco since Saturday and today (Monday) is the first opportunity I have had to get to the internet! Trust me when I say this is making me crazy! So, not too much went on for day 20. We got to sleep in, which is always a good thing! Met at 10:45 in the lobby to head to a local market, Monsefú, to do a little shopping. Besides eating, shopping is right up there on activities of frequency! (Not that I am complaining...) Not in the least! The market was just ok, pretty small, and smelled like urine. The only thing I ended up buying was a hammock, which I am really hoping to be ... read more

2nd day of observation at the military school today- got to see a social studies class and a chemistry class. Very interesting experience in the chem class- the students had a quiz on the periodic table of elements. The teacher would say the name of an element, and the students would have to write down formula that represents each element. The students were talking through the entire quiz, cheating visibly, and one student even had a cheat sheet! The teacher caught him though, and without a word took his quiz and cheat sheet. I am not sure why the difference in behavior during this particular class- at the military academy the students have all been very well-behaved and respectful. This teacher happened to be the only female teacher I observed here, so I do not ... read more
