We went to Nazca to see the famous Lines in the desert. We flew over them for about an hour (trying not to be sick as it´s quite an agitated flight!). we stil don´t know exactly why these lines exist but there are a few theories: - for the Nazca gods (the Nazca were a civilisation ... read more

Arequipa My first stop after Cusco was Arequipa. It's the second biggest city in Peru, situated behind volcanic mountains. Together with earthquakes, the volcanoes have made some action in the city every century since 1500. The city was totally destroyed in 1600. It's a good place to stop if you want to do some outdoor activities. You can find the easiest 6000 meter in the world, Chachani (6075m), which you can climb in one day! River running is big in the area, and you can also visit the deepest canyon in the world, Cañon del Cotahuasi, or the easier accesible one, Cañon the Colca. Both canyons are twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA, with a depth of 3191 m! After three days in a canyon on my rafting trip, I didn't feel ... read more

Hey all, sorry for being cut short yesterday, I turned around and my entire group was at the dinner table being served! I can´t remember where I left off, but I´ll try to hit the highlights again. Breakfast is being served, so I´ll keep it short. After the first morning, we drove to Pisco (details about the crazy bus rides later), and got to our hotel there (which was quite nice, and as it turns out, Ï´m gonna have a room to myself for the whole trip... I´m person #15. :-) Pisco had an earthquake last august/september, 2000 people died, including the entire congregation attending the church. Apparently the priest told them it was going to be okay and to stay inside. Then the roof collapsed. The destruction is pretty incredible, buildings are just gone. Our ... read more

The Nazca Lines, the cemetery of Chauchilla and the Cantallo Aqueducts Our flight over the Nazca Lines The plane was super tiny, only a 4 seater, including the pilot. Nervously we sat waiting for airport control to allow us to take off, Then we raced down the runway and gently lifted into the air, oh my goodness the view around us and below was extraordinary. The dry landscape, crops of mountains and evidence of past rivers flowing was a superb sight. The Unesco World Heritage Site of 500sqkm of rock-strewn plain, Nazca lines, 800 of them, 300 geometric figures and 70 animal and plant drawings we were floating above. These lines were made from the removal of rocks, exposing the lighter soil below it. Due to the climate and weather conditions very little erosion occurs. ... read more

hello all sorry again for the lack of photos still to find a computer that accepts my card. we arrived from ica to nazca two days ago which is a tiny little city right in the middle of the desert. the coach ride there was amazing, really beautifull arid landscapes and huge mountains. theres not a lot to do in nazca but it did feel like the most authentic place so far. everyone turns there head in facination which a bit funny, its prob because i look so much like brad pitt they get confused. anyway we came to nazca for one thing ... the nazca lines ! nazca was a pre inca culture based in and around the nazca desert. some time in the 60´s i think some american dude was flying over the desert ... read more

Nazca Lines Having taken yet another overnight bus journey this time from Cuzco we arrived in Nazca just after 8am and upon arrival found ourselves swarmed by touts buzzing around us annoyingly like flies. We were tired and had no time for yet more tales of; we give you the best price rubbish, and so headed for a hotel. Where we were approached by a favourite tout of the hotel, this time we relented and listened to him. He suggested to us that we head straight for the airport as the weather was good and we may be able to fly that day. So we did. Having recently heard of a horrific plane crash with no survivors occuring at the Nazca airport we were very selective with the company we used. I was apprehensive it was ... read more

Some History They were not discovered until the airplane was invented and man flew high above them, the Nazca Lines in Peru are a mystery that has yet to be explained by modern science... Are they evidence of an advanced early civilization that history never recorded? Are they proof that early man had contact with extraterrestrials? Is it a giant scientific or mathematic equation? Did UFOs once land in a remote corner of South America? To this day, the famous Nazca Lines in southern Peru pose more questions than answers. They are one of history’s more intriguing puzzles. Sixty years ago, Nazca was a dusty small town in the middle of the desert south of Lima. (OK, Nazca is still a dusty town in the middle of the desert south of Lima, but now it's bigger ... read more

Having got an overnight bus from Arequipa to Nazca, we arrived at 5AM rather less than ready to get on a plane. Luckily we got to sit in the office of the airline we were flying with until 9AM, watching a video about the Nazca Lines and Marie Reiche, who spent her life studying the lines. Although a very interesting documentary, we did watch it about 4 times in a row. img= http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v252/145/67/223401787/n223401787_6227072_3273.jpg center We´re going up in that thing? Our airline company did want to separate the two of us, which did not go down with a tired Katie who is scared of flying. After some raised voices, they started to see things our way and eventually we got on our tiny propeller plane for our flight over the Pampas, into which the lines are ... read more
