Went here with Collie nd Darlene, wanted to do the Nasca Lines fly over but was talkin to a couple people in the Hostel nd they said that the airplane was too small and the flight was v jumpy and well get sick everywhere so we decided to give it a miss and go drinking all day instead. The hostel had a swimming pool so we just drink poolside nd got woken up early in the morning by the roosters across the road! There were about 20 of them and they woke us up both mornings at 6!! So annoying. We decided to head to Paracas which was an overnight bus from Nasca and is supposedly a "Poor Mans Galapagos Islands". That was right up our street so we decided to go here!!. As you can ... read more

The town of Nazca is near the famous Nazca lines, the mysterious shapes in the desert made by the Nazca civilization around 500BC. These shapes are of animals, plants, people and some 'abstract' designs, and were created simply by brushing off the black top layer of desert to reveal the white sand underneath. Due to the lack of rain and tiny windstorm that 'clean' the desert, the lines have remained almost perfectly intact save for the occasional car track (and the highway built by the government before the lines' discovery). We viewed several of the line shapes from a lookout tower and from a high hill. (You can do a fly-over in a small plane, but this was too expensive for us, and is also apparently nauseating.) We went to a local museum, and also attended ... read more

After Cusco, next stop was Nazca, a place I was really excited about visiting. The bus trip there could be done overnight from Cusco, and the staff at our hostel produced a nice, shiny leaflet, showing a nice, shiny bus. I´ve travelled on many buses like this in South America, and they´re fine for long trips - reclining seats, toilet, air con etc. Normally, I go down the bus station and buy my ticket there once I´ve checked out all the companies, but we decided this time to let the guys at the hostel book it for us. They hostel also doubles as a tour agency and books stuff for people every day - what could go wrong? We booked three days ahead, and got a bit nervous when the tickets didn´t materialise. Then when they ... read more

It's another slow day in Nazca. Last night, I met Maddie; an exchange student from the US studying in Buenos Aires. I'm seeing Arpit and Maddie off today as they are both going to Lima on the same bus. Oh my god! I actually meet three Canadians from Toronto (I won't hold that against them). They just arrived from Cusco. The first Canadians I have met on this trip. For a while there I thought that Canadians just didn't travel. It's nice to see some. Maddie, Arpit and I head to the market as Maddie wants to pick up some fruit before they leave. On the way, we stop to buy some cactus fruit. Maddie tells us we can eat the seeds but Arpit and I are not so sure. We do it anyway as Maddie ... read more

Evan and I wake up early to catch our tour of the Nazca Lines. We head to the airport and get split up. It cost us each $60 USD for the tour which includes flight and transport to the airport, but not the airport tax which is 20 soles. I end up on a four person (including pilot) single engine aircraft. The flight is about 30 minutes and if you have a weak stomach I suggest you don't do this tour. If you do, do not eat breakfast! Before we take off, the pilot points out the little barf bag for near each person should they need it. We take off and fly to towards the lines. The pilot tells us that he will circle the lines so that we can see them from the right ... read more

I woke up early and shared a taxi with Evan to the Cruz del Sur bus terminal on Javier Mata. Evan is going to Nazca as well and we are on the same bus. He bought his ticket late so he is sitting in second class. So long Ink Lodge. A great place to stay if you want to be able to sleep. The bus ride is long but normal for South America. It takes about 8 hours and we end up in the middle of the desert. It's really hot and I can't carry my main pack. I definitely packed too many things. I think I brought too many liquids. What was it my friend Kathy said? Oh yeah, pack and then unpack half your things as you won't need them. I'm beginning to think ... read more

After spending an afternoon dodging candy stands manned by apathetic women and enduring promotional speeches by every tour company in Nasca, I decided to wake early in the morning and walk the four kilometers to the airport and book my flight over the lines there. Stubbornly, I refused to spend more money that what needed to be spent, forgoing sleep and relaxation in the process. The early morning walk from the grubby downtown of Nasca (while there, I was asked by several locals what I thought of the town. Needles to say, I lied) was quieter--I only counted 17 taxis who honked at me--and cooler. The day was still beginning and I hunched my shoulders against the upcoming heat of the sun. As I neared the airport, I could see small four seater planes that lined ... read more
