We leave for Peru early as the border is only 3 miles away. Its a quiet border only recently opened to vehicular traffic. Its the usual routine and takes a couple of hours. The only worry is that two of the guys went through early and their bikes are not recorded in the police log! We shall see if this is a problem when we come to exit Peru. The first 60 miles of Peru are mountainous and similar to Ecuador but then we cross into the northern Peruvian desert. This is depressing as the shanty towns are made pampas and thatched split bamboo, and the country is clearly much poorer. The rubbish that litters the side of the road is incredible, depressing and voluminous. This stretches the whole of northern Peru, except when we get ... read more

Ola once again, this time from a lovely cafe in Huaraz. We arrived on Sunday 31st May after an overnight journey from Lima. Huaraz is the outdoor capital of Peru, and probably South America. We have met loads and loads of hardcore climbing dudes (ie the type of people who attempt everest are all here). This is the entry point to the Cordillera Blanca, the 2nd highest mountain range in the world (22 peaks over 6000 metres) and renowned as the most beautiful mountain range on earth, as well as one of the most dangerous - for those in the know, the events that shaped the book and film "touching the void" all happened here - we saw the mountain first hand. This mountain range also contains the world's most beautiful peak, according to World Mountaineering ... read more

Gday Gday, Here we are in Huancayo - the capital of the Junín Region, in the central highlands of Peru, located in Huancayo Province, of which it is also capital. Situated near the Mantaro Valley at an altitude of 3,271 meters, it has a population of 323,054. Huancayo is the cultural and commercial center of the whole central Peruvian Andes area. After a few days in Miraflores, Lima, we are beginning to head in the general direction of Cusco. There are two main routes we could take, down the coast to Pisco and then across, or head straight inland through the mountains, which is what we´ve chosen. It wasn´t apparent to us just how mountainous the area was in Miraflores, after all the smog limited how far we could see... We booked a coach and headed ... read more

Leaving the curiosities of Nazca behind, I headed toward the coast to a small beach town called Paracas. Paracas is famous for the neaby Isla Ballestras, also called the poor man´s Galapagos Islands. The islands have many birds and sea lions. Right now is nesting season, and I was lucky to see hundreds and hundreds of birds (don´t ask me which types I couldn´t tell you) but they were awesome and the sea lions were cute and seemed as though some of them were striking poses for the cameras! Trying to figure out which direction to head next, instead of opting the easy route via Lima, I headed back inland to Huancayo. The road there hugs the mountainside and sitting on the left side allowed me great views, but also how close we were to the ... read more

So apparently the sun rises in the west and sets in the east here. And the big dipper is nowhere to be found in the sky. The water runs down the drain clockwise, probably due to the shape of the sink rather than the coreolis effect, but it was worth a try. We arrived in Huancayo in the highlands of Peru on tuesday after a hellish (for Kristina) 7 hour (300 km) bus ride. We´re at 3400m in Huancayo so running up the stairs makes us feel like old men. Also one drink equals three, so getting tipsy is a lot cheaper hahaha. Our host parents, Patty and Juan Jose are great, and are good about showing us Huancayo from a local perspective. We have a lot more running water than anticipated, which is a plus, ... read more
