This is going to be much easier than sending group emails. A quick overview. I am living in Quito for 2 months, until the beginning of May and then I am going to the Galapagos for a month. I am teaching English at a school near my house. Everymorning I walk down a steep hill and then down another street for two blocks. The kids at my school are between the ages of 2 and 5. It is basically a preschool, but they actually teach them, especially English. The kids know all their colors and numbers up to 10 and other random words and phrases. I like going because no one there speaks English (excpect for the director who speaks a little), and I am not tempted to speak English. Something I am afraid I do ... read more

Alli left Quito for the Galapagos on Wednesday, so the first part of last week was mostly goodbye festivities. On Monday, we went out for Chinese food, then Sébas and Jorge took us on a night tour of Quito by car, which showed me how much more I want to explore by daylight. On Tuesday, we had a goodbye party for Alli / birthday party for Sébas at Jorge's apartment which lasted until morning (resulting in the first day that Julia or I have skipped school this entire trip). Alli left early Wednesay morning and we slept in......by evening we were feeling like ouirselves again and managed to meet Paul (from the Hostel Valhalla) and a friend of his for a couple hours since he was visiting Quito for the night. On Thursday afternoon, I decided ... read more

Started at the school this week, am loving it! The school is in an area called Urquisiqui. This place is definitely not in the Lonely Planet! It’s not even a village, it’s just one or two buildings at a junction in the road, and most of the kids live in the surrounding hills in small farms, some of them walking up to an hour to get to school. There’s probably around 50 kids between the ages of 4 and around 14, I guess, although it varies daily as they’re often needed at home to help in the fields. The school has two large classrooms, two smaller ones, a tiny kitchen and a ‘toilet block’, which frankly is a plague waiting to happen, I try to find a quiet corner in the field like the kids do! ... read more

19/3 - Yet another early morning stampede.... decided not to stay overnight in Lima and rebooked my flights. Arriving in Lima with 55 minutes to checkin and make an international flight to Quito. Would you like a definition of madness???? Checked in and managed to bump myself to an earlier flight at the departure gate.... but my luggage didnt change with me :(. Got to Lima and was told to forget my luggage and get on the Quito flight or Id be left behind. Ignored all advice, collected luggage with 15 minutes to spare, then ran like hell through the departure tax, customs and security sections to arrive at the plane in my socks, shoes in hand just as they were closing the door. Offering to spirit at Macchu obviously worked :) And next to me ... read more

I've just spent the past few days sailing around the Galapagos Islands. We visited the islands of San Cristobal, Esponola, Floreanca, and Santa Cruz. I think the lasting memory of the islands that I'll take back home with me is going for my first swim at a beach in San Cristobal. I hadn't been in the water for more than 2 minutes when I noticed a dark shape in the water nearby. It turned out to be a sea lion pup who had swum by to say hello. "Got any spare fish on you, mate?"", it asked. "Sorry, buddy. I don't eat seafood", I had to reply rather regretfully. Luckily my new mate wasn't too offended and let me take several photos of him when he later went to do some sunbaking on the nearby rocks. ... read more

Hola! First blog, and I seem to have tons to write, so much that I´m gonna purposely leave out stuff about the school and the town until next time, so watch this space. In brief, for the next month or so I´m in Ecuador. I arrived last Friday in Quito and on Sunday traveled about two hours north to Otavalo, via the ´Mitad del Mundo¨ (Equator) from which I have a cheesy pic of my astride two hemispheres! I haven´t figured out how to upload pics here yet. (Internet cafes are such a faff, please someone send me my laptop!) Sorry, I didn´t do the swirly water down the plughole experiment, our guide said it wouldn´t work as the true equator was about 20min North of there. I´m sure if I could be bothered to Google ... read more

Friday afternon, Julia, Alli and I each packed a backpack and caught a bus to the Hostal Valhalla (www.hostelvalhalla.com), which is owned by the couple who run the climbing agency we chose for Cotopaxi, Moggely Tours....he´s Morgan (or Mog) and she´s Ely. Morgan's Swedish, and the hostel has a viking theme - all the rooms are named after norse gods. Ours was Oden. We brought a brochure with us to show the bus driver, since we needed him to pull over and drop us off at mile marker 19 on the Panamerican Highway, south of Machachi. He couldn´t understand me or figure out the map (which made its rounds among other passengers trying to help), but pulled over when I told him to and there we were, standing at the side of the Panamerican highway across ... read more

It´s been a really full week, so I´ll try to stick to the highlights. First off, I have a new housemate, Julia, who is 18 and from Boston (like Alli). And I´ve started guitar lessons with a musician friend of Marianna´s. My second lesson is in three hours and I haven´t practiced at all, so I´m off to a bad start. I´ve also found a new home away from home: the South American Explorers clubhouse. It´s in between work and school and has a great resource center, weekly presentations, and a lending library. On Thursday, Alli, Julia and I went to a presentation on hiking and climbing in Ecuador before we went dancing. The slides made me want to spend the summer backpacking, but we´ll see. Have to see how I do climbing Cotopaxi first. Saturday ... read more
