First of all a bit of back tracking... after Cuzco I cheated like mad (so much for busing around this continent) and flew to Lima. Stayed in Miraflores which is the posh part of town and quite frankly was characterless with lots of the usual US branded restaurants etc. Had my first cebiche (seafood marinated and cooked by lime juice) which was rather lekker and then spent my afternoon in these little minibuses whizzing around Lima trying to get a ticket out of there! Next day and off it was to Ecuador. 27 hour bus trip (an additional three hours due to several breakdowns) and I found myself in southern Ecuador. I had met two other Gringas mad enough to do the same trip in one go and spent a couple of days with them in ... read more

Hello all! Its Jen signing in for my first proper blog! Check out the sign! We know the way to Amarillo and its on the side of a volcano in Ecuador! As if! Let those folk at comic relief know will ya!? Well, our first night in our ´budget´hostal, was unfortunately not our last. Despite the joy of being kept awake all night by horrible noises, and not being allowed out until we had paid our nights rent, we have the joy of one more night there but ho-hum... on to the juicy bits.... Today we went on our first major excursion. Not to Amarillo in fact but to Pasachoa, an extinct volcano outside of Quito. An aclimatization trek. Not only to adjust to the altitude but also our ineptness at Spanish. However, we successfully got ... read more

Well, we arrived in Quito mid afternoon local time on Wednesday, which means I´d been up for about three days. Damnit. Found our feet fairly quickly, and found a decent place to kip. Unfortunately that was too pricey and now we reside in an annex of hell, with dubious electrics and novel plumbing. But at three dollars a night it´s all good. Had fun trying to fit in with the locals (see attached pictures) and generally melting into the crowd in the manner of a six foot skinhead amongst a population of dwarves with girly hair. food is cheap, and good. Tapas is variable and cheap, but we´re feeling homesick so we´re off for a (probably dog awful) curry in a minute. weather is better than Britain (not hard, but 27 degrees C. today) and generally ... read more

Welcome to the online diary of Jen and Rich as we take over Ecuador and beyond. "Why write a diary?" I hear you say, well, I think it was Oscar Wilde who wrote something along the lines of: So i have something fantastic to read on my journey! So here it is! Our online blog. Enjoy, write comments, and remember kids.... THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED, (but it will be online for your pleasure!) wilkommen!... read more

I returned to The Old Town in Quito with a strong feeling of achievement. The Galapagos cruise that had been weighing on my mind for so long had been a huge success and was safely “out of the way”. With three days remaining, I could look back on my entire trip and see an amazing run - not one bad day came to mind. I was also excited to be going home, something that surprised me. I had an energy building inside me that I wanted to get home and focus. I felt a little weird about this final half-week. I had always pictured a seamless transition from the island beaches to the airport but instead I had a few days to fill before my flight (back) to Buenos Aires, and home. Checking in to The ... read more

Yesterday we survived the Devil´s nose train ride from Rio Bamba to Alaussi, it was awesome. Most of the way we were watched by the local children because everybody buys lollipops to throw to them. We spent a small fortune on lollies, as you throw them the children come from everywhere to collect them. The train climbs up through the mountains on the narrowest tracks I have ever seen and crosses some bridges which I would think twice about walking over. When we got to the devils nose the drop to the side of the train must have been about 300 feet straight down. We did have one minor mishap, there was a landslide and a rock landed on Bev ( don´t worry it was only about the size of an egg and made of pumice ... read more

The first thing that I noticed was the smell. A unique, arousing blend of sea spray and jet fuel, whipped along on the hot afternoon breeze. As I followed the orange safety cones across the tarmac, that scent carried a strong feeling of segmentation. Like a Russian Doll, this was to be another holiday from the business of travelling. I had flown out of the cold bustle and smog of Quito and escaped to a paradise. Admittedly, it seemed like everyone else had done the same, and there was a stiff USD100 Park Entry Fee but neither of these issues could detract from the excitement of finally arriving at The Galapagos Islands. Clearing the khaki shorts and tanned legs of customs, we formed back into the little group of four that had been broken up by ... read more
