The flight didn't seem long & the view of the islands was awesome with views of the beaches, dark blue water & cluster of islands. One thing that was a little bit frightning was the runway was short & the plane went all the way to the end, making a turn to go back up for the complete stop! For a few seconds it looked like we would end up in the ocean! We did land safely on SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND. The airport was very small & we found the area to check in for our specific ship. The people that checked us in were our naturalist guides. All people waited in the same place no matter where you were going and it consisted of a open roof area with long benches. We were picked up ... read more

The interior of the Quito bus terminal is dimly lit, with a high ceiling and dingy concrete floors. Venders line the middle of the terminal, perched on stools beside stands piled high with brightly packaged candy and soda. A single lightbulb hangs from the roof of each stand. Along the right wall are ticket windows for destinations throughout Ecuador (Cuenca, Guayaquil, Baños, etc.). The ticket sellers lean out their windows and holler their bus' destination as you pass by. Outside these windows are attendants who try to hustle would-be travelers. Twenty feet away from the Otavalo ticket counter a hustler spotted us approaching, and, shouting, "Otavalo, Otavalo, Otavalo!" he ushered Brenna, Ami and I over to the ticket window. Once our bus tickets were purchased we found ourselves outside and then hustled onto our bus. The ... read more

To market, to market, to buy a fat pig. Home again, home again, jiggety jig. After our fearless leader Brenna found us a hostal we set off to find lunch. We ended up at a place that served vegetarian-Andean food and had . . . wait for it . . . live music. Oh, yeah. It rocked. The restaurant had an outdoor patio, and standing out there were about five men playing flutes, drums and who knows what else. My music vocabulary is a bit lacking, so all I can say is that it was the best music I have heard since I arrived in Ecuador. After lunch it was time for the market. As we were walking along all I could think of was that market nursery rhyme, which was amusing since not only were ... read more

The GALAPAGOS ISLANDS; I didn't know much about them except blue footed boobies and huge turtles lived there and just what I saw from the movie 'MASTER & COMMANDER'. The wildlife alone made me want to visit here. From reading brochures & researching it on the internet, we had no idea what to expect. When we booked this with GENERAL TOURS, it said you walked on lava rocks & always had to be with a guide on the islands. There was a checklist of many things to bring including enough shirts to change a couple times a day, walking shoes and rubber-soled shoes or thongs. We were excited but at the same time nervous. There were 3 of us going; my friend Bernie, (who went to Nashville with me) her friend Brenda & me. Our itinerary ... read more

Basically we arrived in loads of time to Madrid airport to check in for flight to Quito, and this time they told us the flight was full and the best they could do was put us on standby and we would have to hope some losers didn´t show. Queue rage and lots of confrontation by Becky, in the end they offered us the option to fly to Bogota in Columbia, then connect there for Quito. In the end it was only two hours extra, and they paid us 300 euros each for the hassle which was cool. Also notched up another country on our itinerary, which was good, even tho it is the most dangerous country in the world and one of George Bushs´axis of evil!!! However, had a bit of a mare in Columbia as ... read more

¡Hola Chicos! Been in quito for about a week. First things first. The beers are massive and cheap. It costs about $1.50 for local brew. Started spanish school on mon. Realised i knew nothing but was able to pick a few words up. On the first day of school they sprang a surprise on me. Salsa lessons! We re all so crap, its pretty funny to watch. Im already sun burnt even with using ridiculously strong sun tan lotion. But its not that bad. School has been good but it seems like ive got the worst teacher, everyone has told me she only ever talks about money and death which should make for interesting conversation. The schools got 7 students at the moment. 2 english (inc me), 2 swiss, 2 swedes and an ozzie. Theyre all ... read more

The perils in developing a routine is that you inevitably begin to believe you know exactly what to expect in your day. Today -- like every other day -- my alarm went off promptly at 7:30. I pulled myself out of bed, dressed, ate a bowl of Krispie Rice, gathered my Spanish notebook and homework, and headed out the door. Unlike the previous few mornings, the sky was cloudy, and the volcano to the east of our apartment (Cayambe) -- which we often cannot see at all -- glowed amid the morning clouds. It appeared as though it were suspended in the air, just pausing near Quito before moving on. But in spite of the clouds and Cayambe, when I left the apartment I expected to see, smell and hear the same things I did every ... read more

Thousands of them came rushing towards me! Out of the corner of my eye I had seen them slowly creeping up to me, but now they were charging toward me, full speed! I was alone and my only hope was a desperate leap into the river. That's how it felt as it dawned on me that I was lost in the jungle. The forest surrounded me. I was fortunate; people knew where I was; I had 3 hours of daylight left; and if all else failed I could walk down the Cosanga River until I reached town (it would have taken me a day and a half). I was extra fortunate because after only thirty minutes Rafael came charging through the underbrush looking for me. Harold was back for a week before he left for 3 ... read more

Well, it finally happened -- late Thursday night Brenna, Ami and I came down with something. When we went to bed it looked as though Ami was the only sick one among us, (he had a really high fever), but at some point in the night I began to have very odd, vivid dreams and nausea. I went to my Spanish lesson in the morning anyway, which turned out to be a huge mistake as I spent most of the time ill and unable to concentrate. After four painful hours, I dragged myself home and crashed on the couch, where I slept on and off for the next five hours. Brenna and Ami both went to their afternoon classes (even though neither one felt well). For awhile there it seemed as though Brenna was in better ... read more
