Futbol season in Cosanga has begun. Although Cosanga is small enough to fit into one photo (I really need to upload some) and is poor enough to be a Peace Corps mission, we at Yanayacu call it civilization. The town is a two hour hike down the mountain. We all piled into Harold's pick up truck to go down the mountain for the beginning of soccer season in Cosanga --- All FIFTEEN of us piled into Harold's truck. Then we picked up Galo and his wife, and on the way we found Marcos and Rafael walking so they jumped in too. All NINETEEN of us drove down to Cosanga for the opening ceremonies. The opening ceremony was amazing! Everyone (less than 500) from Cosanga was out on the muddy streets surrounding the Coloseo (a cement slab ... read more

We´re all checked out of our hostal in Quito, waiting to go to the airport to fly to Peru. This morning, we visited the "Capilla del hombre" (The chapel of man), a gallery and entire space deisgned by native Ecuadorian artist, Oswaldo Guayasamin (there is also an official website). The paintings were very blocky and obviously inspired by Picasso, and a couple of others. He´s quite the national figure and, although the gallery opened a few years after he died (2002), several important local and international figures were at the inauguration, including the president of UNESCO, Fidel Castro, and former French President François Mitterrand. Guayasamin designed the entire building, and the artwork, murals and sculptures inside. Very impressive! He also travelled the world during his life, and most of his art reflects the sufferring and oppression ... read more

Grant and I are pretty depressed. His house is in a dry area that is being looted. He's spent the past few days waiting for the generator to come on so he can check the internet. I mostly sit around waiting for Grant to give me something to work on. We basically took today off. I still wait like I did in the states for the water in the bathroom to warm up before I wash my face. It comes directly from the spring here though and it will never be warmer than ice cold. The weather seems to have gotten warmer. When I was directing the students through their structured sample plot I stripped off all of my sweaters. Working with those students was really odd. They were all undergraduates from University of Oregon. I ... read more

#3- The Galapagos Islands- Thursday, September 1, 2005 Welcome to my new journal. This is my first entry for travelblog.org however it is my third journal entry since I began travelling in South America on August 4th. In the future I may add my 2 old entries to the travelblog in order to have a complete set. The Galapagos Islands…where do I start? How can I explain in words what must be experienced to be believed? It is truly a world of its own. It is so different from anything else that it will be difficult to describe. Here goes nothing… I organised my tour from Quito with a friend I met in the hostel El Centro del Mundo. Andrew and I walked the streets of the Mariscal Sucre area of Quito (a.k.a. Gringo Central) in ... read more

Hi All, This has been quite a packed week, including an overnight trip to the spa town of Baños, the packing up and leaving our home in Riobamba, heading up to Quito and an overnight trip to Otavalo. We´re in Quito at the moment, and will be basing ourselves here for the rest of our time in Ecuador (until the 15th). Last weekend, we took a trip from Riobamba to Baños for some much needed spa activities. But, since nothing in this country occurs without some sort of adventure, we must tell you of our journey. To begin with, there are currently two roads open between Riobamba to Baños, which is located to the northeast. One road which has consistently been open takes two hours by bus as it is a somewhat roundabout journey. The other ... read more

Although I´m not usually a big fan of urban settings, Mike took me on a walking tour from Mariscal Sucre to Old Quito. It was like walking backwards in time as the architecture progressively changes from modern, to republican, and spanish Colonial. We started off going through a park with a market replete with all the typical tourist merchandise, probably mass-produced and overpriced. I´m going to see what is available where before buying stuff, although I already got myself a shoulder bag for walking around town. Mike helped haggle the price down for me (He just really likes to haggle). Even in the park, the extreme dichotomy in affluence was apparent: well-dressed business people walking past drunk people sleeping on the grass. A large tree, with the lower trunk painted white to protect it from sunburn, ... read more

I finally arrived in Quito late last night, about 1 hour late after a minor adventure in Houston... Houston was so windy that they decided to close the airport just before we were about to land. So, we were diverted to Elliston Air field, an apparently "ex-military" air base (according to the flight attendant), just south of Houston. While we were trapped on the plane re-fuelling, we were treated to fields of blackhawks, fighter jets, transports, and one of the oddest-looking planes I´ve ever seen (I´ll post a photo when I can get it off my computer). Basically it looked like a giant tropical fish with propellers on the fins - probably a guppy-like transport of some sort. Eventually, the weather moved away from the airport and Houston re-opened, although by that time, "The Weather" was ... read more

After trying to get cheaper flights, we finally booked one to head to Cuzco via Lima. There, Mike and I have a whirlwind tour of the area planned: 1 day at Macchu Picchu, another day at an Inka fortress, and I think we head to Lima on the next day. Mike wants to spend a day in Lima checking out some colonial hospitals. I wish I had more time to see more in the area, but the realization that the entire Cuzco area, loet alone Peru, could be a trip in and of itself. I will have to satisfy myself with seeing the major landmarks. It looks like I won{t be able to spend the time I wanted visiting Pisac and the sacred valley, but I will have to content myself with seeing it from the ... read more

Dear all, During the last two weeks I have been doing a few (if little) hikes and walks in the Sierra around Otavalo. Waterfalls, mountains, lakes and healing trees - I can't begin to describe how beautiful it is around here. And what amazes me every time is how quiet those places are. One can hear the occasional pig gruntling or a bird singing, but apart from that there is just absolute silence. (Unless some annoying tourists have decided to take a taxi all the way) Despite having seen absolutely beautiful countryside, I am a little disappointed about the limited amount of native animals that I have come across. So far, the scores are: category "Exciting!" llamas: 4 (three white, one brown) eagles wild: 1 eagles in big bird rehabilitation centre up in the mountains: 10 ... read more
