Cyanide?! Gasoline?! What is going on down there?! Well, there are some nasty aspects of living down here, and there's not really anyone to do them but me. In fact, there's not really anyone left at all. The summer field season is over and everyone, including Harold (the owner of Yanayacu) has left. There are around 8 of us here, all between the ages of 19 and 26. My Bachelor of Science makes me one of the most learned persons at the research station. We've dropped all the PhDs off at the airport in Quito and sent them back to states. After dropping Grant off I stayed in Quito to be a tourist and to take a break. I climbed the Catedral del Voto Nacional --- literally climbed--- over catwalks and up scaffolding--- and got my ... read more

hola amigos, familia y viajeros First let me say that i have a NEW "host" for my photos/fotos. click the below link to see all my photos from this trip my photos are now on smugmug.com CLICK HERE I am currently in Waukegan, Illinois and will be leaving on the second to last leg of my trip tomorrow when I will take a greyhound bus to Duluth, Mn. This will probably be the most uncomfortable leg of my entire trip. If you don't know, the bus system in the US sucks to say the least. The trip is a 7.5 hour ride by car, but by bus it will take me about 16 hours or so. From Duluth I will probably have to hitchhike to Ely, MN (which is a two hour car ride from ... read more

I got to Quito safe and sound. The flight was not too bad as I got to sit next the emergency exit. Lots of room to spread my long legs! However the landing was very bumpy and after we landed the steward told me it was the second most dangerous airport in the World! I stayed the first few nights in a hostel recommended by my cousin. It’s at the edge of the old town and has a rooftop terrace with amazing views over Quito. The weather in Quito is rather like a British summer. It gets to the twenties during the day but can be a little cold at night. It’s strange to think we’re only a few miles from the equator. The reason the temperature is less than you’d think is because we’re at ... read more

Hola Amigos! We just returned to Quito today from an amazing 8-Day cruise in the Galapgos Islands. It´s hard to summarize 8 incredible days, so this will hav eot be rather brief. Our sailing ship, the Sagitta, was outstanding, as was the captain, crew, and especially the cook. Our Guide was disappointing, but more on that later. All the other guests on the cruise were really cool and we all got along, which was a pleasant surprise. There were folks from the UK, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, and even other Canadians, who joined us on the second day of the cruise. Their original boat also had problems, then their agent booked them onto the Darwin Explorer, which they immediately refused when they saw how old it was and the bad shape it was in. It sank the ... read more

Hola! Yep. Brenna, Ami and I are here in Quito, safe and sound. We arrived late Monday, and Ami's cousin's inlaws picked us up at the airport and took us to our hostal, Posada del Maple. It's been such an exhausting few days that I don't even know where to begin, but unfortunately (not for you, I suppose!) I have to be brief, as I am currently hogging the only computer at our hostal. Our hostal is located in La Mariscal, the tourist district of Quito. Yesterday we wandered around, found lunch and then came back here with the intention of just stopping by and putting on sunscreen. In actuality we all crashed on our beds, and woke up with enough time to eat a snack, find an internet/phone cafe, call our folks and then meet ... read more

#4- The Southern Coast of Ecuador- Friday, September 16, 2005 On from Quito to the large, busy coastal city of Guayaquil to the famous surf beach of Montañita; from there moving onto the quiet fishing village of Puerto Lopez before returning to Guayaquil and escaping the coast to the colonial beauty of Cuenca. After spending about 10 days in the Galapagos, I returned to Quito accompanied by an itch to return to the coast. The ocean was calling me, and my pasty, white skin needed sun after the unsuccessful search for sun on the Galapagos. I spent a couple of days in Quito gathering up the gear I left behind and a small farewell party with Andrew and Larse (fellow passengers on the Guantanamera). Our party started at Larse’s place, and we conversed with his roommate ... read more

Saturday we got up early and took the bus to La Mitad del Mundo, The Middle of the World! The bus ride took about 45 minutes and it was really easy to figure out the bus system. Ecuador has an incredible public transportation system and it is easy to use. It costs about $1 per hour on the bus, so again, el cheapo!! We arrived in a town called San Antonio about 22km north of Quito. The town itself is very charming, we had some lunch and then walked over to the equator. It was 50 centavos to get in to the area which had some wonderful shops and places to snack. There was beautiful traditional dances being performed in the courtyard, check out the dresses! There is a huge monument marking the equator, and of ... read more

i arrived in Ecuador on the 17th of September. i was in Mancora, Peru for a few days for a little sun and beach time. On my way to Ecuador, i hopped on a bus that was coming from the amazon and i got the typical response, look a gringo. The people were nice and i had a nice chat. When i got off the bus the driver only charged me $1 for a two hour ride. But this is the point where things changed. I was surrounded by taxi and moto taxi drivers all telling me what i needed to do to get to the border and cross the border .... finally after being overwhelmed i took a taxi to the Peruvian border control, went through with no problems and then we drove to the ... read more

Hola! We made it safely! We arrived in Quito on last night and thank goodness had a driver waiting at the airport to pick us up. It was late so we just went straight to our hostel and went to bed. This morning we got up and hit the streets, we walked aroung for about 3 hours just trying to get a feel of the city. We ate lunch at a small Ecuadorian restaurant, $6 for both of our huge meals! Everything is ridiculously cheap down here, a bottle of water is 40 centavos. Everywhere we have ate so far has been way too much food and neither of us can finish it. Quito is great, it is the capital of Ecuador and has around 1,400,000 people here. Big city! The city is surrounded by the ... read more
