Well I'm still here in Medellin, things have turned to some unexpected turns. Currently my $$ point is at 170k pesos are about $85USD. The business venture I had planned on turned sore(the man I was going to do business with died) so here I am with no concrete ideas. I don't have enough cash to return home(Costa Rica) my wife is five monthes pregnant, and I'm here stuck in Colombia. But I do have options, will try to call an associate in Bocas del Toro(Panama) to see f he can wire me at least $150USD. The other option is to try and call my ex-boss in Costa Rica; hopefully he'll wire me the cash, and I'll repay him when I return home. I f anyone knows of a cheap way from Cartagena to Limon, Costa ... read more

I arrived in this beautiful city just yesterday. Just checking on the possibility of hiring on a commercial vessel; or the chance of meeting some Canadians or Americans who need an experienced hand of their ship! if not, I'll return to Medellin.... read more

8 months ago if you had asked me which South American nations I would be visiting on my upcoming trip I would have told you that Colombia did not feature in any of my plans. The reputation for Drugs, Danger, and Guerrillas was my reason, but after having spent months meeting travellers whom had ventured into Colombia my view on the Cocaine Capital changed. I was told time-after-time that the land and people are only matched in beauty by one another, and that to miss the oppurtunity to go there would be very unwise. My oppinion of Colombia has been so dramatically altered, that now I am here in Colombia! I caught a flight out of Quito and arrived in Bogota at 8am on Tuesday morning. The first Colombian that I really interacted with was ... read more

I think the biggest difference between here and the US is the quality of CornNuts.* Last week I went to the world’s biggest Vallenato festival, about 4 hours from here in car. What’s Vallenato you ask, as far as pop music goes, Carlos Vives is poppy Vallenato. Who is Carlos Vives you ask? Anyways, it’s a local music that is insanely popular here, in fact in my little town if I care to hear it any hour of the day or night, one needs only to crack open a window and let it in. A lot of accordion and scraping a cheese grater with a stick. Sounds great I know, but I actually kind of like it. The Vallenato festival is in Valledupar, south of here, where it began in force. People from Valledupar are ... read more

Well after nearly 3 weeks in Colombia, I have finally found time to add a new blog. It has been somewhat of a change of pace since leaving Cuba and we now find ourselves quickly approaching the end of our trip. That said, much has been explored in Colombia and some adventuring remains. We arrived in Bogota from Havana on April 12th, one month after leaving Lima, Peru for this fabled island. Cuba was an incredible experience but one that was hard on the pocketbook, therefore it was with some relief that we landed back on the southern continent to find prices more to our liking. Bogota, set at 2600m or so was a refreshing change from the heat of Cuba and was not unlike spring in Vancouver. Cool to cold night followed by warm ... read more

So........ my bag was stolen and we headed to the capital...Bogota, to sort out a new passport at the embassy. Expecting a dirty, sprawling city we were pleasantly suprised when we arrived at the sue hostal ( which would become the closest thing to home since we had left). Situated in the older part of the city, spanish colonial style buildings, colourful streets dotted with murals and some amazing graffiti aswell as cool places to hang out we had landed ourselves a chilled little home while we waited for my passport. We spent a few days wandering the streets around the area, some great flee markets and art museums. We had a little taste of colombian art, when we went to the botelo museum, loads of repulsive paintings of really fat people.nice. but they seem ... read more

From start to PresentAntonio Martinez-VasquezI've been in Colombia for a few days now; the first time was about 20 years ago(I'm 53yrs. young) it isn´t as dangerous as the US State Department states. Just use common sense that's all. I'm from Puerto Rico so I'm a native speaker of spanish (not to be confused with Spanglish). So I pretty much fit in....even in Morocco (since I'm a muslim) Stay away from these condesending idiots who took an english course from the national tourism department(such as in Costa Rica) and the knucklehead swears he/she can hold a conversation and sounds like Desi Arnaz from "I Love Lucy". The same could be said for most americans who took a spanish high school course, from an anglo teacher! I hire myself out to people who need ane experienced guide ... read more

Where I startedAntonio Martinez-VasquezIt's Monday and I've in beautiful Medellin, Colombia for about five days. It's changed alot since I was last here in 2000. But the changes are extremely positive. There's a good likelihood of leaving tonight or tomorrow for Panama City. I started an impromptu import/export business: in order to finance my travels. During the past two years, I've been to Trinidad, Peru(it stinks) Equador(three steps up from Peru) Nicaragua(quite different from 1978-80) all throughout Central America. But the least country I liked was Costa Rica, everything is for sale from the women to the politicians. The capitol San Jose really smells, and the infrastructure of the city is an urban planners nightmare! It's amazing how dumb most american tourists are; they really think Costa Rica is neat! Everybody ... read more

Geetings from the mad country. Sorry all, I know I was off the grid for a while like the Chinese guy in the Matrix. I took a pretty madcap trip over Semana Santa/Holy Week. I have determined that you very much miss the best parts of the country by flying over it rather than driving Colombia’s wild roadways. The car treated us well, despite two flat tires, the two tows and several hours in a mechanic place. It finally rained, and man did it. In my little hamlet alone, there were a number of sweeping out to sea drownings. You know what was awesome, the church trip to the Holidome on the first secular Friday of Al’s social calendar. Friday I left straight from school for Bogotá, a 20 hour drive due largely to the ... read more

Colombia April 12- May 5, 2007 BOGOTA We were glad to arrive in Colombia to get back in touch with the outside world! Cuba has isolated us from the rest of the world for one month as we could barely use emails or phones due to their very slow speed and outrageous costs. The history of Colombia has been known for its constant struggles among the military, guerilla and paramilitary. The latter are known to be "sponsored" by the government to counteract the guerilla. However, we all know that this form of "counteraction", which is usually violent, is "forbidden" according to the international community's standards. In the last days, President Uribe has been omnipresent in the newspapers and on TV since he has been accused of being in "contact" with the paramilitary. It is hard ... read more
