my boy ed just remixed this track, which we recorded in Bogota, and I wrote in La Vega while searching for my friend Sarah's mom, so now the vocals are good and you can download it from the internet! Check it out. My friend Ed Leonard is from New York and makes lots of beats and does production. He made this beat using some samples from Miles Davis´s kind of blue album, a jazz classic that I love. Thanks for the remix Ed! Ed´s currently in Cali doing some recording, and we are gunna meet up later in brasil probably and lay some more tracks down. We'll let you know. Here's the link: http://www.geocities.com/colinnewcomer/lavega.mp3 the story of the song is, one of my sis's best friends Sarah that we grew up with, was from La ... read more

Well, I finally got out of Santa Marta. And Cartagena is really nice. The buildings are lovely. Ancient walls and stuff. I had a little wander around but will do more later this afternoon. I saw a demonstration. Power to tha people. And then Rene had a haircut. And you can get fried chicken with a surgical glove to eat it with. And some potatoes.... read more

This is Cartagena, A place with a history of pirates, stunning Carribean beaches, Colonial architecture, hot days, humid nights, corner cocaine dealers, and parading prostitutes. This is a place that seems to barrage you with a culture that isn't found outside of Colombia, in a city that still houses forts, barracks, and cannons from ages found now only at the theatre. This is Cartagena! So what am I doing here? I am travelling with my Scottish friend that I met on the 'Ciudad Perdida' trek. His name is Colin (great name). We thought we ought to come back to Cartagena, because last time I didn't really see as much as I should have, and he hasn't been here yet, so we are here now(or at least we were when I wrote that bit). Our Cartagena ... read more

As I lifted my bare foot from the smooth, dull grey, slippery surface of another round topped river stone to fight through the current that seemed to cut my feet from beneath me, and then stretched out through the flowing, fresh, cool water to find another sure spot to set down my slowly shifting weight, I realised how great things at that exact moment in my life were. And as I think of that thought, and take into consideration this moment right now, I feel pretty fortunate still. I am here at the Northern tip of South America, just out of the jungle covered valleys of the Sierra Nevada of Colombia taking another step in a journey that has run through all kinds of different worlds, and has put me in company with some wonderful ... read more

I finally ended an unhealthy relationship I’ve been in for a while now. There’s only so long you take all the negativity and the screaming on the phone before you figure out that you deserve better. I’ll miss DirectTV, but I think the pain is part of the process. I’ve introduced the term ‘rere’ as in retard, to Colombia via my students. There’s nothing like hearing one student tell another student “stop being a rere!” to let you know, that somehow, in just a little way, you’re doing some good in the world. Christine, I know that makes you proud. If I was to describe the weather here right now in a single word I’d probably go with mindnumbingwillsappingstrokeinducingridiculousnous. Or hot. I have a kind of weird parent who always shows up at my class ... read more
