We took a minibus from Bogota. He was an hour late then drove like a mad bugger north to Villa de Leyva. It took a while to get out of town. All the streets have been numbered. Carreras (avenues) and Calles (streets). We were staying around Calle 13. We saw signs for Calle 100 and more before we started to hit countryside. It was very pretty with lots of farmland - cows and crops. We stopped at the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. There was an old one that had to be closed because the water was making it unstable. The new one was built in 1992. Certainly not as good as the one in Poland, much rougher and simpler in construction, still the main cathedral was big with columns and there is a cross carved into ... read more

We bused to a little town close to the boarder of Ecuador and Colombia and caught a taxi to the boarder. We got the stamps on both sides and caught a taxi to Ipales. We immediately got a mini bus that was leaving for Pasto. We traveled through beautiful countryside, steep hills with huge gorges. We think the bus driver was trying to commit suicide, he was passing on blind corners but actually preferred double yellow lines on the top of blind hills. Sometimes we were left gasping, knowing that if we went over the edge, it would be the end. There was no way the bus could stop from going all the way to the bottom. The country side looked very familiar with us recognising places that it could be in NZ. For example the ... read more

Today was my birthday, and I had a rude awakening at 5am for the next stage in my adventures. We were heading for Colombia, and it was to be a long day of travel. We had to allow extra time in case of problems at the Ecuador/Colombian border. For this portion of my travels, I decided to use an overland adventure company called Dragoman. They are one of only two companies worldwide who enter Colombia, due to the volatile situations and potentially dangerous areas. I thought it would be safer to use a company with good local knowledge and track record. We made it through the border without incident, and drove to a small airfield at Ipianos. We had to fly to the capital, Bogota, because to travel overland would take us through rebel-controlled areas. Meanwhile, ... read more

Getting to Bogota This was the 4th leg of our Dragoman trip. We started in Quito and went to Otavalo where we had already been. It was a little more interesting this time because we caught the Saturday market. Didn't buy much but it was lovely to experience the full market with streets and streets of stalls. We left Otavalo very early in the morning. The hotel provided us with a packed breakfast. It was a couple of hours drive to the Colombian border. We were stamped out of Ecuador and into Colombia without incident. A guy called Russ met us at the border to help us get to the airport and take Cameron off our hands. There was a cycle race going on so the main road was closed. We were initially directed into ... read more

South America » Colombia » Medellin May 31st 2007

The people of Medellin smile at me with white smiles every day from behind a counter, down a supermarket aisle, at a table in a restaurant, passing in the street, or looking from the other side of the Metro platform. Beautiful people with perfect figures, and a wardrobe consisting only of figure flaunting outfits seem to see something special in us few blue eyed, pale skinned people that venture out into the publics view. Occasionaly someone will approach me and ask me where I am from, or complement me on looking the way that a common kiwi boy does. Whistles and suggestive words ring from crowds outside bars as we conspicuously weave between the waves of turning heads, and then we seem to be set upon a stage in a spotlight as we try to ... read more
