14.11.11 Gapster day 1: Bus from Portobelo to another village and got on the Gapster Boat. Very wavy but fast for 1 hour then one engine broke so journey took 3hrs. Immigration was cool at the island of El Porvenir, played volley ball and drank beer, ate egg sarnies on pretty much a desert island, then to Kuna island (can’t remember the name), dinner with the Kuna. The indigenous people that inhabit the islands are called the Kuna Yala. They live under their own rule. The Panamanian government only intervenes if it’s to do with international law i.e. Drug running from Columbia. The island chain is called the SAN BLAS and they are paradise! I got a chickens foot in my stew! The Kuna Yala’s toilets are just little shacks with a jetty so they literally ... read more

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all my blog readers! Sorry my blogs are getting later and later, as my trip goes on it seems to get harder and harder to find the time to write. I will try and get better for the remainder of my trip, which seems to be fast approaching. I will admit it, I was also a little scared to go to Colombia since it has consistently been ranked as one of the most violent countries in the world. The guerrilla organization FARC is the cause of many problems within the country and one of their main money makers is to kidnap tourists and government officials and hold them for ransom for many many years. Thus I will not be taking buses from city to city, instead I will fly which ... read more

So, after an amazing couple of days at Tayrona national park, we returned to Taganga for another 2 nights in order to take it easy before starting Spanish school in Cartagena. We didn’t plan on doing a great deal whilst in Taganga again, and to be honest, that’s exactly what we did. Nothing. By the time we got back from Tayrona, it was pretty dark, so we just decided to take a well-earned ‘indoor’ shower in our hostel, grab some food and take it easy. We were contemplating the 24 hour pizza place over the road from the Hostel as a potential place to eat. The fact that we had only seen this place open once during the whole time we had been in Taganga was now a bit of a running joke and therefore, we ... read more

Firstly, I want to clear up that it wasn’t a case of me ‘finally relinquishing control’ of the blog. In fact, I have been trying to get Donna to write a blog for a good couple of months now, and she only finally agreed recently. I am hoping she will write more in the coming weeks too, a) because Donna is an awesome writer, and b) so you don’t get bored of my waffling and bus stories! (Incidentally, our bus to Taganga did break down, but I’m not even going to mention that at all!) Anyway, as Donna mentioned, we were leaving Cartagena for a week or so to go up the North coast of Colombia to try get some much missed sun, and to check out a couple of the beaches that Colombia had to ... read more

Hi all!Hope this finds you all well. Thanks for informing us that it is the World Cup at the moment - would have passed us by completely! Also heard we won against Wales! The last week has been very eventful. Our extra days in Santa Marta were used to sleep and try to get rid of a bad case of gipoguts. We also stumbled upon a festival with some cool theatrical pieces and music, including a woman doing trapeze work while hanging from a rope held up by the fire dept´s crane! Unfortunately, the next day, two guys attempted to rob us while we were leaving a corner cafe. The two men flanked us and then held a knife to Marco´s side while reaching into his pockets. I ran for help while Marco just refused to ... read more

Taganga turned out to a launching pad of adventure for us. We had met our friend Dominic in Cartagena and now we'd made the four hour bus ride to the small coastal town of Taganga on the Caribbean coastline. This was a quick visit for a couple of days while we made our way towards Santa Marta and to embark on the trek to The Lost City. We arrived at night and got setup in a hostel before heading out and about on a session around the lively village. Taganga is noted as a good place to get Scuba certified on the cheap and also has a bit of a reputation as a bit of a party town. Lucky enough, we had our Scuba certs completed, so after a night on the town, Dominic and I ... read more

Finally another vacation! It had been a long time coming! Rich and I left Toronto in the afternoon on Aug 1st, and started our Colombian adventure. But first we had to change planes in Houston, and then again in Bogota, to reach our destination on Santa Marta on Colombia's Caribbean coast. After hearing reports that Santa Marta is a "hole" we decided to spend our first night in the fishing village of Taganga, just north of Santa Marta. Taganga is an up and coming backpacker destination. Its quickly filling with hostals, and had become a favourite destination for Israeli service men and women on leave. It has a decent beach, 2/3 of which is filled with small, colourful fishing boats. The other 1/3 is beach for tourists. We stayed at Casa Holanda, which was a nice ... read more

Today the alarm rang at 5:30 a.m., which is really really early for anyone aware of my sleeping habits, which are not those of an early riser. Unfortunately, it was necessary given that our guide was coming to pick us up at 6 a.m. for our trek to Tayrona National Park. At 6 we were greeted by our guide, Bruno, who would prove to be a great asset, as he was energetic, funny, extremely knowlegable about the prak and a wealth of information about the history of Colombia. He took us to a breakfast place to begin, where we had arepa (which is a flat, round, patty made of cornmeal) and eggs. This was second time trying this Colombian specialty and it was much better than the first time...I think because it had more butter this ... read more
