Doing nothing can really take its toll on a person. Basically the Caribbean coast needed to offer me more, its all well and good sipping smoothes and doing nothing all day, but there´s only so long an extremist like myself can be entertained for. So, I needed an adventure, and what better place than the Lost City to get one. Although a small voice and the sight of the walking wounded back from the trip was saying don’t do it. Ah am harder than that! First day - Had lunch at the starting point, deated up and ready to go. Our guide informed us that we were going to walk for half an hour and then take a nice dip in a natural pool. Lovely, I think I can deal with the other six days.... little ... read more

Hello all, Team St. Albert T8N (me, lena and Matt Johnson) decided to leave for the Lost City a day after meeting up in Taganga. Even though we are on the carribean coast - this place is sort of a hole and basically a jumping off point for the lost city, to go diving, or to buy cocaine from whacked out locals on the beach. Our group of five included the three of us, a high maintanance girl from London and adorable Ben from Sydney. After 2 hours in the back of a jeep we set off with our guide Alfredo - a Colombian version of Indiana Jones. Our first 45 minutes were an easy walk towards a small river that we stopped at to swim in. The refreshing swim and happy laughter was soon eliminated ... read more

Everything about this trip so far has been surreal. But even moreso since I left Caracas. In Caracas, I had Alejandro and his family so it was pretty familiar still, and the malls were almost like a slice of Americana (except for the whole Spanish thing, but even that´s not a stretch). Since I left Caracas, however, every waking minute is entirely different from anything I´ve ever experienced or dreamed. I left Caracas on Tuesday night at 8 on the overnight bus to Maracaibo. It was a very nice double-decker bus and they played the movie "John Q" with Spanish subtitles, which was nice. We arrived in Maracaibo at 5:30 AM and I was able to get a taxi to a parking lot where "Por Puestos" (shared taxis) gathered. I use the term taxi loosely. Mine ... read more

After getting back from the jungle we decided to hang around Quito for a night and then catch the flight from Quito to Medellion on the 6th!!! We stayed in Medellion for 1 night in Black Sheep hostel which was really nice and so we sat down to watch Anchorman and The kite Runner. The next day we decided to take a look around the city and so when we stepped of the train we saw a student protest. As we had to go through the protest we decided to hurry and so when we were in the middle of the students they all scattered and so wat we saw was riot police comin up the road in an army tank spraying all the students. There was nowhere for us to go and so we had ... read more

TAGANGA Taganga is just outside Santa Maria on the Caribbean coast. What is there to see in Taganga? There are cool beaches as well as cheap scuba diving courses. You can get P.A.T.I. Open Water certified for about $200. As far as I’ve heard it’s the cheapest in the world at this point. We found an apartment right on the beach for the same price as a hostel because the hostels were all booked up. We were paying the exorbitant price of about $25 per night. Shock! Gasp! I know, but that’s expensive for us. We had a balcony with some hammocks that we quickly jumped into and never left. “Should we go to Tayrona? (the ridiculously overpriced beach that takes 3 hours to get to).” “Why? We’ve got a nice beach here and we’re saving ... read more

It is so great to be back here. As soon as I arrived, I was walking around town with a big smile on my face. Checked back into the Divanga hostel and the staff there were so pleased to see me. Went to the house and met my housemates, which were these 2 cool Ozzie girls, Gabby and Sarah. Went to the beach for a bit and watched the sunset, then went back and got ready to go out. I´ve just kinda spent my days here exploring the different beaches, trying my hand fishing and eating lots of fish! ... read more

When you come down the hill into Taganga in the highly cramped and small colectivo, the view over the bay is indeed a beautiful one. A small fishing village situated between large imposing hills near the big and not too pleasant city of Santa Marta whose only real claim to fame that we could fathom is that it boasts the legendary Carlos Valderama as its mayor. Taganga on first appearance seems pleasant enough, but certainly has its drawbacks. The beach for example is gritty and normally covered in some kind of litter and occasionally dog muck, there are too many tourists for such a small town and the wind can reach up to levels that must be bordering on a hurricane, and that is all ok as long as there isn´t an electricity failure which there ... read more

Wow - finding words to describe the last couple of weeks is hard. Taganga is a place that I found very easy to get stuck in. I call Taganga a holiday within a holiday because when you are travelling life can sometimes be hard. You are constantly on the move, going to new places, carrying all of your worldy possessions on your back, trying to communicate in a foreign language, make decisions and make them quickly and arriving in a new place on a regular basis where you don´t know a single soul. Taganga is a place where the living is easy for a traveller. Anything you think you could possibly want you can get very easily. There are restaurants gallore, fruit juice stalls everywhere, lots of dive schools, bars, walks in the mountains, people selling ... read more

Day 710 (09.03.09) Arriving in Taganga at around 9ish after the coldest bus we had been on yet (they really racked up the air con on this one) and therefore a very sleepless night we went in search of the our mate Vic who had made the journey up from San Gill the day before. When we got to the hostel we had mentioned was a possiblity we found her not there, and it was a bit of a dump so we weren't really surprised. Mark went off in search of an alternative place to stay, scoring a room in a new (well still being finished off really) hotel next to the beach for half the price. Result. Getting settled in Chrissie went for a lie down to try and recover from the sleepelss night before ... read more

So when we heard about La Ciudad Perdida Trek, people were saying very different things. Some said it was an easy stroll with not much at the end of it and others claimed they had enjoyed it more than any of the Inca trails in Peru. We got a really good price, teamed up with John an English guy whom we met in Cartagena and who is as equally trapped in Taganga as we are, and set off for the 6 day trek not really sure what to expect. Our guide Archie did not look like a man who trekked for a living (being about 17 stone), however with legs that any athlete would wish for he appeared to know his stuff and turned out to be a hard task master with little sympathy for us ... read more
