Hot, Humid, Sweaty, Rainy, with Mosquitoes and sand flies, conditions that don't make you want to go for a five day 68km hike. Notable was our apprehension based on other peoples grueling reviews, Luckily it seems that everyone who has written reviews seem to want everyone think that they had achieved the impossible, and we were met with an enjoyable beautiful, even difficult trek, but far from impossible. That is the 4 night 5 day option, we noticed groups doing it in shorter periods where having more trouble with blisters and were generally rushed, for us and everyone we spoke to the trek itself is a main highlight so why rush, thats not to say that the ruins are not amazing. We booked our tour with Expotur, who we found excellent. David the manager was nothing but ... read more

This is my second last day in Colombia and I just can't believe it! In two days we cross the border into Ecuador and in three days I say goodbye to Anna and continue on solo! So much time has passed and so quickly, and I have fallen very far behind in documenting the last couple of weeks, it's time to try and catch up. We have been moving alot faster than we did on the coast, I guess it's hard to move quickly when it's so damn hot. The last time I wrote we were just about to head up to Cabo de la Vela. We weren't really sure what to expect at all; and it was very different to anything I had imagined. It was not a difficult journey there; time consuming, but supremely ... read more

Back to civilization again, unfortunately. We had an amazing trip to the most amazing beach I have ever seen or could have imagined. Tayrona is a national park located on the north Caribbean coast. We took a bus into Santa Marta and found a connecting bus to Tayrona on Monday afternoon. Since we heard that food prices are outrageous (quite true) we brought some standard backpacker diet staples of doughy white bread, peanut butter, granola and beef jerky. All the Aussies and Kiwis give us crap until they try it in all of its deliciousness. You´re welcome, Sean. After an hour or so hike that we dominated if I might say so myself, we came to the first beach of the park, but it wasn´t good for swimming and my Colombian stalker recommended another one farther ... read more

Happy 4th of July!! I suppose I chose and odd place to celebrate it, but what can you do? One of the bars in town is actually having a 4th of July party- nice! We went there last night and met these crazy Colombians who were absolutely fascinated by gringos (even though the town is flooded with them). They took a million photos of us and were videotaping us dancing with them. Make sure you keep yous eyes peeled for the latest YouTube sensation- Gringos Gone Wild! I am currently in Taganga which is a small beach town on the north coast, about 100 (?) miles west of Venezuela. It´s touristy but like I said most of the tourists are actually Combians on vacation. This morning I dove with the shop Calypso for cheap, about $50 ... read more

So here we are sitting in Riohacha in part of the northern most region of Colombia, burnt, hot but smiling. Wow there has been much adventure since I last wrote in Bogota and we have travelled quite a way. We caught a bus (that was meant to be 8 hours, but was closer to 12) to Bucaramanga, not arriving until about 10pm. This was probably not the best idea, we holed up in the closest hostel we could find but our glimpse of Buca was not a great one. Perhaps we were in a seedy area but there were alot of drunk leering men and prostitutes. We were in a tiny room partitioned off from someones garage, and woke up to thumping music and car fumes rapidly filling our room. So we decided to leave a ... read more

Hola! Aside from spending time in Cartagena, Laura and I also made a trip up the coast to a small fishing town called Taganga for 2 days. Set in a small bay on the Caribbean Sea, Taganga was a really nice laid back spot to chill out for a day and the jumping off point to visit the beautiful Tayrona National Park. After a 5 hour bus ride to Santa Marta, followed by a taxi ride to Taganga, we were lucky to be able to get a room at the most popular hostel in Taganga called La Casa de Felipe. This was a great spot. Tons of common space on 3 different levels (the top level was littered with hammocks and great views of the bay for the sunset), nice rooms and a great restaurant that ... read more

This will be a short entry, I promise. Last night we took an over night bus from San Gil to Santa Marta, and then a taxi to Taganga. We were told that we´d have to ¨change buses¨in a town called Cienaga (literal translation: Swamp). All of this was arranged with the owner of our hostel in San Gil and a guy named Eduardo at the Berlinas window of the bus terminal. It all seemed easy, smooth, and carefree... but guess what?! We got pimped out again! We´ve started to realize that ¨changing buses¨really just means that one bus company that is NOT going to your final destination will, at some point, be selling you off to another bus company that is. Apparently this is common here, locals do it all the time, and it´s the way ... read more

Woke up to the sounds of birds, frogs and cicadas. Got ready and into town by 7 45. Taxi was waiting with 4 people already in it and Roddy coming down the street. I squeezed into the front seat with the driver and a grandmother. Peter and Roddy got into the back with mama and her daughter. The grandmother kept crossing herself as we went around the corners. When we got near town the taxi began doing the scenic route through the suburbs, dropping off and picking up items. Got to the Santa Marta "bus station" safely and disengaged ourselves from the taxi. Walked through a large market area to pick up the minibus to Taganga. Had breakfast with Roddy at one of the restaurants there. arepas con huevos (fried corn meal pockets filled with eggs, ... read more

I took a few extra days in Taganga to complete my diver certification course. It was probably the best investment I've made in a long time. Besides the quiet and solitude diving allows, the aquatic life in this area is spectacular. I also made a couple of friends out of the experience. After completing the final exam, my dive instructors took me out for beers, and we spent the next two days drinking in the streets of Taganga... not that there aren't bars here, but most people just buy beer from kiosques and sit near the beach or on the street and listen to music. I slept in a hammock on the porch of one of my instructors, ocean breeze lightly rocking me all night in my adult-sized cradle. When I awoke I walked down the ... read more
