Before I left on my trip, when people would ask me if I was nervous about traveling alone, I tentatively admitted that Christmas might be a little hard; being away from family and friends. I pictured being alone in a hostel somewhere with strangers, feeling totally isolated. When I would call home I would have to choke back tears, pretending that everything was fine, wanting so much to be by the cozy fire with my family in Point Reyes. Although I did indeed miss being surrounded by all those I love and experiencing the familiar Christmas in Marin, my Christmas could not have been further from the tragic day I imagined before I departed. My initial fears were put to rest when I met Max and James in Baños Ecuador less than two weeks after landing in ... read more

Woke up early on Wed 23rd October and got a 4 hour bus ride to a little fishing village called Taganga. It is about 15 minutes away from Santa Marta and is quite a popular backpackers hangout. We stayed in Divanga Hostel and met so many cool people here. The first night Boucs and I went and found a local restaurant on the beach and ate the most amazing Red Snapper ever! Really big portions, we had one each and also another main course in the middle as a sharer - we were so full! The following day we went and chilled at the beach all day and done some snorkelling, then in the evening got a taxi into Santa Marta. We went to a club called La Poerta which is Spanish for "The Door". Cool ... read more

Hey everyone!! Sorry its been ages since my last blog but things have been a bit crazy recently! OK.... here are the bits i was in too much of a rush to put in the last blog about the Lost City as well as the other photos! :o) History lesson... :o) ..... Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) is one of the largest pre-Colombian towns discovered in the Americas. It was built between the 11-14 centuries. When the Spaniards invaded the Tayronas (the local people who lived in the "Tyrona" region) were completely wiped out - they were either killed, died from diseases the Spaniards brought with them or they fled into the mountains! So their settlements disappeared under tropical vegetation for many centuries until it was accidentally discovered in 1975 by guaqueros (robbers of pre-Colombian tombs). The ... read more

Hey everyone!! Will have to try and make this a quick one as we have to get the bus down to Bogota soonish! The Lost City trek was amazing! It is by far the most challenging thing i think i have ever done but it was soooo worth it and im so glad i did it! We went with Magic Tours who were amazing! We got picked up at 7am (with Esther telling them to go and pick up the others first so that we could finish breakfast hehe!) and all squeezed into a tiny jeep around the food supplies! The ride there was a bit of an adventure in itself as the roads leading up to the starting village were insane - massive cracks and holes in the road, huge rocks and rubble everywhere, we ... read more

We were determined to get a bus out to Cartagena bus terminal even if it was a mission because taking a cab was way too expensive. As it turns out it was pretty easy, we got up really early to get as much of the travelling done as we could before it got too hot, walked to where we were told buses go past, asked a man on a street stall there and he flagged us one (which because it was early on a Sunday morning was pretty dead). It was a proper local bus with caribbean music blaring full blast and people getting on with all manner of things, like a basket of fish and boxes of advocados. It was way more fun than a proper terminal bus. As a local bus it went by ... read more

Hey everyone!! Ended up having to stay in Cartagena even longer than planned as my debit card wasnt working so had to wait a few days for that! Finally left at 5am on Friday and got a 4 hour bus to Santa Marta and then a taxi to Taganga! An American girl recommended a hostel to me which I went to - soooo nice! Pool, amazing breakfast, hammocks, free internet etc! :o) Was looking forward to trying to get a tan by the pool that afternoon but unfortunately it rained so just went for lunch with some Finnish guys, read and played cards! That night we had a massive BBQ in the hostel which was really nice and a good opportunity to meet people! Left for Tyrona National Park the next morning, leaving most of my ... read more

I haven´t worn shoes in days. I´ve walked in the rain in flip flops. Ran for the bus in flip flops. Sat on the beach in flip flops. I even danced salsa in flip flops til I kicked them off and just danced barefoot. In fact, I only wore shoes once after I had been invited to a typical dinner in the nearby city of Santa Marta. I found myself well dressed (for a backpacker) with an uncomfortable feeling of boxed-in toes only to get to the house and realize the hostess was wearing: Flipflops. Urg. I´d come to Taganga for what I thought would be a day or two, but here I am 17(!) days later still wearing the uber comfy slippers from Brasil that were the exact WRONG choice for hiking Colombian Jungle. It ... read more

There should be a Kids book.My first Border Crossing.Lord knows I needed a guide.Well fellow folk, I have left Venezuela and made it to Colombia, though not without incident. I can see why the European Union was a good idea if for no other reason than to curb the rampant corruption and frustration at the border. Not to mention the currency. I am confused about that too...I am happy to say that I was not picked on for anything because (as explained by the locals) ¨Soy Negro...¨ Gotta love reverse racism.Bas wasn´t so lucky. He got put into a small room/cell twice and was forced to pay a small ¨entrance fee¨ of about $5 dollars. That sucked. And I (as a true friend) sat there and looked like I didn´t know him.Because, Y´know, I´m Colombian and ... read more
