***NOTE 6 mayo 2008 19:05*** Thank you, James St. James, for correcting me about the story behind Cinco de Mayo. I'll try not to butcher foreign holidays/customs/events in the future. (It'll probably still happen, but that's why I said try.) ***END NOTE*** Let me start by saying Happy Cinco de Mayo to all my friends in the United States. I'm sure you're appreciating Mexican Independence the best way you know how. Keep it kosher, if at all possible. Secondly, I want to congratulate Diane, Jon, and Gianna, on the successful adoption of their new son/brother, Jonathan. I wish you all the best! Furthermore, thank you for participating in a genuinely important and rewarding cause. Adoption is one of the most beautiful things a parent can do. Congratulations on your new bigger family! Okay, now moving on ... read more

Still no pictures :( but at least they'll be here soon! (One can only hope.) In the meantime, I'm headed on a long weekend trip to Chiloe, a small archipelago off the coast of Southern Chile. Methinks the plan is to stick around until Sunday. I promise to take notes to tell you all about it when I get back! Of course, I could just transfer everything from my amazingly super-duper travel journal, courtesy of the Lanes. And if I have that camera stand, all the better. A photo tour southwestern South America! Hasta luego! PS-If you visit here, don't say you're an American. So are the locals, and they can get pretty pissed if you call yourself that. Instead, try "estadounidense." Call me if you have issues with the pronunciation. :) PS-Weather Forecast for this ... read more

Snapshots of a weekend down South: a benedryl-induced snooze through in semi-cama accomodations to Valdivia, courtesy of Jet Sur, with occasional stirrings as the bus repeatedly coughed and cried and threatened to conk out (a tremendous way to celebrate the last day of Spanish class for foreigners, the last week before the start of the actual semester) Saturday the most delicious, giant hamburguesa that ever I have eaten, at Heissman's Cafe in sleepy downtown Valdivia after arriving at our hostel; bien cocido (we had our dudas when we saw photos of the famous carne crudo), queso and palta (avocado). the rotating case of kuchen and strudel tempted us, but the six-inch diameter sandwich was more than enough even after a night and morning of pent up hunger... (but I must not forget: nescafe, in porcelain cups! ... read more

Paatin noudattaa tuota ehdotusta suurin piirtein. Kavelin ensiksi kuitenkin bussiasemalle ostamaan torstaiksi lipun Puconiin. Se olikin ihan hyva idea. Ensinnakaan mikaan bussiyhtio ei mainostanut matkoja Puconiin. Kun sitten kysyin yhdesta, sielta neuvottiin "Tsäk bus". Kun kysyin seuraavasta, siella kirjoitettiin "Jac bus". T... read more

Herasin aamuyolla pariin otteeseen. Ensimmaisella kerralla ikkunasta nakyi Skorpionin tahdisto. Jippii. Taman paremmin en ole Merkuriusta nahnyt koskaan Suomessa. Merkuriuksen nakyvyyskausihan on vasta alussa. Bussi tuli tayteen. Matkan varrella siihen nousi matkustajia, jotka joutuivat seisomaan kaytavilla. Koska taalla on monta kilpailevaa bussiyhti... read more

Next up was Valdivia on the Pacific coast 3 hours away. We arrived to rain and misery arse clouds that made the place look very dull and boring and there was not much encouragement to explore the town. We managed to drag ourselves out and got soaked in the process; it’s just like being back at home! Shortly after we reached the port and as you can imagine with it being so close to the Pacific, the place is big on its fish and there were lots of fishermen bringing there catch in and selling it straight of the boat. It was great to see all the hustle and bustle and look at all the strange types of fish. I couldn’t wait to get stuck into some! Like the last fish market on the dock we ... read more

Valdivia. Well, the Spanish wanted to stay there, and so did we. Unfortunately, we arrived late at night, after the bus and our bags were given the royal once over by the police at both the Argentinian and Chilean border crossings. On top of that, the bus wouldn´t start as we tried to leave the Chilean post. I swear the bus driver managed to fix the problem with what looked like a piece of number 8 wire and a small stick. Lucky too, as the border was about to shut and few cars or trucks would have been passing through until the morning. Finally getting in about midnight, we set about looking for a place to stay. We saw a light on at one of the hostels and buzzed and knocked until finally one of the ... read more
