(Yo escribiré esta blog primero en Ingles y despues en Español) After saying goodbye to my family in Manchester airport and travelling 36 hours through London, Madrid and Santiago, I finally arrived in Valdivia where I got back together again with Leslie after 9 months apart. It was really nice to be back together again and it didn't take any time at all to feel like we had never been apart. I was surprising fresh when I arrived and we took one of the local buses to the Valdivia town and arrived at the house/ cabin. It’s small but cosy and close to the centre of the town. My first impression of Valdivia was that there are a lot of cables... all along the streets. But it seemed a nice place and nice weather. The night ... read more

Day 14 We arrived into Valdivia on the extremely efficient Chilean bus service which entertained us with the Karate Kid film (the one with Will Smith’s son) in Español. I then decided it would be good exercise to walk the 2km to our hostel in the midday sun. So with our packs on our back and front we trudged off with map firmly in hand. After finding the road we were unable to find the hostel, the number 1334 just wasn’t there. As the sun beat down on us, and Em’s frustration levels rose I started to worry. But just then a friendly taxi driver stopped and asked if we needed help. I showed him the book and address, the taxi driver confirmed he knew where the hostel was (said a 1000 pesos), pointed down the ... read more

We are off!!!!!! We left our beloved home of Viña on the night of the 22nd and headed to Pucon. The drive was amazing as we were entering the lake district. We must have seen ten different lakes just on the way down. We arrived early in the morning and found a hostel that we could camp in the back yard for a very cheap price. The frst day we went on a little hike to a huge waterfall. The hike was alright, mostly on the road which is not my favorite, but once we arrived at the waterfall it was all worth it. I think the waterfall was about as big as multnomah falls. Also during our hike we did not see one single person which was unusual because Pucon is the most touristic town ... read more

There´s plenty we need to update between Bariloche and now, but here is a sort of news flash i suppose... We are in Chile for the 4am earthquake this morning, but we are fine. We are something like 900km south of Santiago, so where we are there's no major damage. I've never jumped out of bed so quick, but Sarah slept through the whole thing! Who knows how we'll get on travelling north over the next week, but I think we'll be OK. We'll update the rest of the blog soon!... read more

First stop in Chile, Valdivia, a pleasant little university city close to the pacific coast in the Lake District. We stayed in Hospedaje Felisa close to the bus depot, reasonable room, good breakfast. We were no more than 36 hours here but enjoyed every minute. It is an attractive place occupying a bend in the river with Sea Lions lazing around the port and a rather large submarine moored to one side. Good food to be had in the Volcano Restaurant, Pichanga for 2 and a pitcher of Kuntsmann beer which is brewed in Valdivia really hit the spot. ... read more

Valdivia doesn't get that many foreign visitors compared to other locations in Chile but we thought it was a great spot. It is a university town and has that good vibe feel that students bring to a place. Instead of swiftly passing through as planned, we settled in for a few days, deciding to celebrate James' birthday amongst those good vibes. The thing that sets Valdivia apart from other towns with the standard church-plaza combo is its riverside fish market. Which sounds boring and smelly. It was anything but boring (although slightly smelly). Sea lions, pelicans and a whole gang of other birds hang out there, waiting to be thrown scraps of fish. As the fish are being filleted and prepared for sale, the vendors would throw the bones, skin and guts into bins behind them, ... read more
