Hola everybody! Well we have now been in Chile for a week and a half and how things have changed for us! We are back on the road covering huge distances and finding exciting new places and people already! We arrived in Santiago and spent a couple of days there finding our feet and catching up as over the previous 48 hours we had taken three flights, been through 4 time zones and crossed the international date line meaning that we arrived almost before we left 16 hours before!! From Santiago we caught a bus and headed South for a small town called Villarica in the Chillean Lake District. This however, was no normal bus, only costing 15 pounds for an 11 hour journey with seats with double leg room and almost laying flat out, (blankets ... read more

A few hours after leaving Pucon, the bus arrived in Valdivia, as buses tend to do. I therefore got off, as people tend to do when their bus reaches their destination. The first thing to note about Valdivia is that it contains the most difficult to find hostel I've encountered so far. It's supposedly the most popular in town, but we managed to walk past it three times before spotting the tiny sign above the door that gives away its location. First task completed, it was time to hit the streets of Valdivia. In a touristy sense, I'd come to Valdivia because it sounded like a nice spot to spend a couple of days, with a river winding through town, a lively fish market, and slightly bizarrely, a huge German presence. The actual word for cake ... read more

S mraky nad celou Patagonii preletavame zpet nahoru do Chile s mezipristanim v Puerto Montt, hlavnim meste regionu Los Lagos, tedy jezerni oblasti. Pucon se nam nakonec stava i mistem ... read more

My arrival in Valdivia began with another potential accommodation issue. My check in at the hostel was vague. It took a while for someone to answer the door and the guy did not seem to know what he was doing when checking me in. I was not given a key to my room. It was not a confident start to my stay but, hey, it was only one night. I learnt later when returning to the hotel later on that the guy only started the job that day hence the vagueness was explained. The owner, Lio, reissued another invoice as the one previous was written out wrongly. Lio made my stay at the hostel very enjoyable plus I had an empty dorm room to myself, my own breakfast table and meeting Ramona, the hostel´s pet rabbit ... read more

- ... read more

Valdivia is a university town founded by and named after Pedro de Valdivia, conquistador and no great friend of the local Mapuche people. Standing at the confluence of three rivers, it has recovered from bearing the brunt of recorded history's most violent earthquake in 1960 to be called the prettiest town in Chile, a title which would never have sprung to mind based on my two days there of rain and gloom. Perhaps because of the student population, I saw numerous fast food joints, with my first MacDonald's sighting for over a month. On the plus side, there were at least two Chinese restaurants in the town. Valdivia is also home to the Kunstmann brewery, producer of Chile's supposedly best beer. Kunstmann originally started beer manufacture when the town's main brewery was destroyed by the earthquake, ... read more

Roughly an hour ago, 2 AM local time, I believe that I may have experienced my first earthquake. Shocking as that may seem to anyone reading this from California or along any tectonic plate boundaries, I've never felt an earthquake before. Hurricane? Check. Blizzard? Of course. Tornado? Oh yeah. Watched one coming down through the clouds not half a mile away in April '06. That was scaaaaaary. I've experienced the majority of nature's little climactic quirks, and now, I've added another one to the list. YEAH! I know, earthquakes aren't really something you should get excited about, unless you're an earthquake scientist, and then you should still find a doorway. Furthermore, in light of what hit China a few weeks ago, I should probably have more of the fear in me. Unfortunately, it's difficult to compare/equate ... read more

The first time I encountered a musical micro was probably in my second week here in Valdivia. Still shell-shocked that "Oh my gawd, yes, they do all speak Spanish all the time" and attempting to overcome the immense language barrier that high-school Spanish classes had not sufficiently equipped me to handle, I was constantly exhausted. Still fresh meat, however, I was also awed by Everything. Even the machistas, which, by now, is just old. But there I was, riding the 4 or 5 back to el Regional when these two college-age Bob Marley-esque characters wander onto the bus with a ukelele and a bongo. They sit down in the seats and subsequently begin to play. It's spectacular stuff (for the most part) even when you don't know what they're saying. They played through a few songs ... read more
