Puerto Varas We arrived in Puerto Varas, Chile, yesterday after a very scenic bus trip over the Andes from Bariloche. Our plan was to climb the Osorno volcano at least up to snow line, but the high cost for a compulsory guide prompted a change of mind. Instead we managed to communicate well enough to catch a local bus to the town of Petrohue and a lake called Lago Todos los Santos. A very pleasant cruise on the lake offered great views of the snow capped volcano. Perfect cone shaped mountain, currently dormant, but we´re told has erupted many times before. The language barrier has been fun. We´re getting better at the Spanish which is just as well because most of the tourists down here are well off locals from elsewhere in South America, so the ... read more

For a change I thought I would give the gospel a miss and enlighten you to a few other developments over the last week...... So, expense number 1. We received a lovely email from our campervan company highlighting that everything was not well with our New Zealand account. In fact there was an outstanding balance that was owed to them , and inturn owed to the local bill. Yes, after driving a sports car (and a might turbo charged beast at that, known as the "Cheadle Hulme Bullet") in the uk for many years and keeping a clean nose, I managed to rack up a speeding fine in NZ. The fastest toilet in Lake Taupo apparently. At first I felt proud that I had managed to take not only a diesel tranny to 77 in a ... read more

Also, wir waren in bester Geselschaft. Habe mich ... read more

Hello from Steph. I'm making a guest appearance at writing the blog, so it may not be up to the usual standards! We have had a really good time since leaving Ushuaia, and have made up for all the overnight bus trips and dodgy hostels with a bit of comfort, starting with the Mare Australis. This was a 3 day cruise to Punta Arenas in Chile, on a smallish boat with 132 passengers from 19 countries including just 7 from the UK. The ship was very luxurious and we had a huge cabin, with beds rather than bunks, and a big window to watch the scenery go by. It was “all inclusive” and the food was excellent and plentiful. Oh and there was plenty of wine and cocktails, although we only really tried these out on ... read more

Although this says Puerto Varas, its the closest place on here to where we actually were for this entry, which was Petrohue. The journey from Ancud to Petrohue took 3 buses and a ferry, taking me back to the days in Central America where you had to take multiple bus journeys to get places, I'd got quite into the habit here of jumping on a bus and ending up exactly where I wanted to be! Anyway, we arrived at Petrohue, which is on Lago Todos los Santos, supposedly the most beautiful lake in the southern lake district. And on first impression, it really didn't disappoint, with crystal clear waters, the Andes lurking omniously in the background, and snow capped Volcano Osorno sealing the deal. To get to our campsite, we had to take a boat across ... read more

Ein herziges Doerfchen mit ca. 30000 Einwohner. Viele Chilenen verbringen hier Ihre Ferien.

Day 639 (28.12.08) After a pretty uneventful bus ride of sleeping, reading and a bit of Harry Potter, we pulled into the bus station in Puerto Varas by mid afternoon. As a former German Colony, Puerto Varas has maintained a very different look and feel to other towns in South America. The architecture is the first and most obvious difference with coloured shingle clad buildings lining the streets giving it a very 'German Mountain town' feel. Walking into town with no real decision on accomodation having been made we stumbled upon Hospedaje Ellenhaus, a cheap but comfortable option with all the facilities we needed. With our bags in the room we went out to pound the streets and see what this little town had to offer. As we walked through town it was obvious that it ... read more

Having endured the pains of big bus journeys, Pucon was time for some serious R and R. But what a place to do it in! Stunning scenery, a lake (warm enough to swim in) with a nice beach, and a big, bad volcano looming over the landscape! The town itself reminds me somewhat of Center Parks, all wood buildings and big wide streets. Except Center Parks with a volcano alarm! Which got tested every couple of days, and had an interesting rating system where green actually meant a few things were happening with the volcano (no light was the best!). The main draw of the town is, indeed, climbing said volcano, and my friendly hostel owner was very keen for me to do this (he has scaled it over 1500 times, but since retiring with a ... read more

To get to Puerto Varas, we had to fly into Puerto Montt airport, and were transferred by car for 45 minutes to Puerto Varas by a woman trying to sell us every tour under the sun. We stayed at the Vicky Johnson guesthouse, a lovely old place with massive high ceilings and a massive living room to read in. The town of Puerto Varas is very picturesque and we sat by the huge lake enjoying the surrounding views of snow capped volcanoes and local dogs and kids splashing in the lake. We briefly checked out the casino which was not great and did some laundry in the rather dull town. Adventure sports of kayaking and rafting seemed to be the thing to do here. So the next day we were picked up in the morning and ... read more
