>PDJ : L’asado aura compensé pour la gênante coupure d’eau toute la journée **** An asado (BBQ) is organised today by the owner of the hostel I stay in. Until now, I always ... read more

We left Argentina for Chile by taking the lake crossing from Bariloche, Argentina to Pt Varas, Chili. It is a multiple boat and bus trip that takes about nine hours. It was an absolutely gorgeous trip with green and blue lakes surrounded by snow covered Andes mountains. What is amazing is this area is the same latitude as Barcelona but has environment similar to the Milford Sound in New Zealand or Norway fjords. The city of Pt Varas sits right on the lake with Osorno Volcano sitting directly across from the city. I believe the pictures and videos speak for themselves.... read more

In this adventure we cross a border, befriend German Psychologists and eat our own weight it tasty, tasty seafood. Another stamp in the passport; Chile. Eleanor admired the detail on the stamp and the fact that it has both blue and red ink; very stylish. It took a while to get here as our proposed route across the Andes was Esquel to Chaiten and then the ferry to the island of Chiloe. However, timetables change and in the off-season this doesn't always get comunicated, which forced us to detour back via Bariloche to cross the border on a bus to Orsono. Chile appears to be slightly paranoid about fruit and vegetables and sniffer dogs are on hand to ensure that none of this dangerous stuff makes it across the border where it could to make a ... read more

What a difference a day makes! Within 24 hours we moved from the warmth and beaches of Rio to the lakes of Bariloche with the snow covered peaks of the Andes Mountains in the background. From sunning ourselves on the beach in Rio to rugging-up in our jackets, gloves, scarves and beanies, for a tour around Lago Nahuel Huapi and National Park, we found the the chanage of environment quite dramatic. Bariloche's scenery from various vantage points is picture perfect and it rivals anything we have seen. A chair lift took us to the best viewing point - clear blue skies, crystal blue lakes, forests to water level and snow-capped mountains behind - what more could you ask for. Our hotel sat on the edge of the lake overlooking this stunning view. Bariloche is a ski ... read more

So goodbye Pucon and our hostel family there (it was hugs and kisses all round when we left) off on a 5 hour trip to Puerto Varas. More bad Spanish and we arrived an hour later than we thought we would, the tour office we were supposed to visit was closed and we managed to trek the 15mins to our hostel to be shown to a room with a snuggling couple in a double bed in the middle (awkward). Thinking we had missed our tour and would have to reschedule we chilled in the morning only to be greeted by a smiling American ready to pick us up to go off trekking the local volcano -whoops! What a day though navigating a dodgy trail over lava thousands of years old and getting within 2 hours of ... read more

January and February are high summer in Chile, when Chileans escape in droves from their cities - smoggy, sweltering Santiago in particular - to enjoy their country's extraordinary natural wealth: its lakes, its rivers, its mountains, its beaches. We'd never have guessed as much over the past 6 weeks, however:so out of the way is the Carretera Austral that only a relatively small handful of people make it there. Chiloé, with its (not altogether unearned) reputation as a place of endless rain, also escapes the summer hordes despite its accessibility. And so we have been lulled into a dangerously false sense of security. Our plan for after Chiloé is to visit regions X and IX - Los Lagos and Araucanía respectively - just when tens of thousands of Chileans are doing so as well. There really isn't ... read more

Capatins log dated Wed 7th March Weather same as yesterday . Cloudy and overcast . Rain. Wind 4 occasional 3 falling. It' s amazing to think that 24hrs after leaving Puerto Natales and navigating through the fjords no human habitation at all in this desolate yet beautiful land. The journey is 1460km (900 miles) and I am wondering if we will see any other human life at all between here and our destinstion Puerto Montt. I have never been to a fjord and it is quite eerie. Land to port and starboard occasionally only 130 metres wide for navigation and yet no human lif or recognisable building. Looking out the window it is if you are stuck in a film loop and I joked with Megan from NZ that actually we were stationary and that there ... read more
