Puerto Varas

We arrived in Puerto Varas, Chile, yesterday after a very scenic bus trip over the Andes from Bariloche.

Our plan was to climb the Osorno volcano at least up to snow line, but the high cost for a compulsory guide prompted a change of mind.

Instead we managed to communicate well enough to catch a local bus to the town of Petrohue and a lake called Lago Todos los Santos. A very pleasant cruise on the lake offered great views of the snow capped volcano. Perfect cone shaped mountain, currently dormant, but we´re told has erupted many times before.

The language barrier has been fun. We´re getting better at the Spanish which is just as well because most of the tourists down here are well off locals from elsewhere in South America, so the business people see no reason to learn English just for our benefit.

Flying to Punta Arenas tomorrow, and the Strait of Magellan. The weather has been pretty good so far but I bet it´s cold down there, thats a long way south BRRR !!!

caio. !!

A quickie in return
For a person who has conquered Mt Gower, the climb to the snow line would have been a breeze, so a cruise on a lake and be equipped with all the floatation gear must have been more of an experience. Makes you wonder at the state of the craft, dare I say BOAT. Trying to think who the person in reflections reminds me of, Grace Kelly - no, Gina Longbridgia (Can't spell) - perhaps, somebody like that. Anyway great photo Bob promoting shades. Have fun in the cold climes Dad and Mum
