Day 175: Arriving in the Chilean Lake district Although not raining when I got up this morning, the dark grey clouds outside didn't look too promising. I had initially thought that I'd stay a bit longer in Castro and visit the national park of Chiloe, but what with the weather, and the fact that there don't seem to be too many tourists around at this time of year, I've since had second thoughts. I'm all for going walking in some of the less well-known national parks, but to be the only person there who's not a hunter, else living in one of the settlements there, might be a bit creepy. The subsequent decision has been to remove myself from relative isolation and head up to Puerto Varas in the Chilean Lake District for a couple of ... read more

We hung out in Bariloche for a night when we got back from the great cathederal of rock, then caught a bus to Puerto Varas the next day. We managed to find a hostel that was not too much of a back breaking walk from the bus station. It cost 5000 pesos a night each (about $11) just to camp in the backyard, so it was a little on the pricey side, but nice enough. I often sleep better in a tent then in a dorm, so I was looking forward to a good night. Except there happened to be a party in the backyard of the house next door. If I were not so tired I would have gone over and crashed it, but instead I tried to crash on my thermorest. We both managed ... read more

Marcelo lahti toihin. Macarena lahti kayttamaan minua Puerto Varasissa. Ajoimme viela kaupungista itaan, jotta saatoin kuvata tulivuoria paremmin.... read more

I arrived in Puerto Montt mid afternoon and catch a bus straight to the small town of Puerto Varas about 30min away. Every summer, this staid and manicured former German colony is besieged by visitors (international backpakers and chilians alike). This quant little town is set on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, and on a clear day you have arresting lake views of Volcan Osorno. While the town is rapidly growing and there are possibilities to hike, kayak, fish and ski, it still remains a sleeply little town, and has a long way to go to match Argentina´s Bariloche. I only had a couple of days in Puerto Varas before heading back into Argentina. I was really keen to do some kayaking on the Lakes, but unfortunately no tour operator would sell me a tour as ... read more

PV has been our base for a couple of days, but apart from the views of the mountains and Lake Llanquihue it is really only a staging post for the trips through the lakes and the mountains and volcanos. There is nothing else remarkable about it although it presents itself as the tourist centre of Patagonia north. At breakfast in the hotel we bumped into our ex GP from Ponteland - Dr Anthony Kay plus wife who were on a Patagonian tour. Double takes all round Having 'done 'the Town in a couple of hours we invested €1 on one of the many local mini buses for the 20km trip to Puerto Montt. This turns out to be the staging post for the cruise ship market and their trips to the mountains, lakes and volcanoes too. ... read more

Please refer to the last blog (Santiago) as we have added pictures to it, finally! We left Santiago on the 18th and took a short flight to Puerto Montt (South of Santiago), then a short bus trip to a small village on Lake Llanquihue. Our hotel over looked the lake with a view of two snow capped volcanoes. The following morning we were picked up by bus to start our Andean Lake Crossing tour to get to our next destination in Argentina. We crossed through the Andes from the Pacific Coast to the interior of Argentina. It took three bus rides and three boat crossings. It was a long trip but the views of the mountains, glaciers lakes and volcanoes were well worth it. The land is all protected by provincial park with very little inhabitants ... read more

Summary in English: There is also a volcan Osorno in the Chile, not just a town Osorno. So we decided to have a closer look at this volcano as well. We travelled through Puerto Varas to a small village Petrohue situated just next to this volcano. It is a beautiful place on the lake. There are very nice waterfalls Petrohue as well with wonderful view on the volcano. We spent there a night in a family camp and had a nice smoked trout for a dinner :) Kedze sme tolko casu stravili v Osorne, tak sme sa rozhodli pozriet si aj sopku Osorno. Ale ta je trochu dalej. Tak sme sa z Osorna presunuli cez Puerto Varas do Petrohue - malickej dedinky, ktora existuje asi len preto, ze z nej chodia lode na vyhliadkove plavby a ... read more

I spent more time in Lake Country, Argentina than planned. Now I am faced with yet another decision. And I hate decisions! Do I drive to Chile even though I will only have 3 days, 3 nights or chill more here in Lake Country, Argentina. It is only one hour over the border, but then I will have nothing new to see. To go somewhere cool and different, I am getting mixed reviews from the locals as to the length of time to drive, sounds like 6-7 hours to Puerto Varras or Puerto Montt, then 5-6 hours back to Bariloche to return the car. So I think this over....again and again....then I remember one of my life long dreams....to eat my favorite seafood, Chilean seabass in Chile! Well, I have to do it! Yes, I have ... read more

On March 10th my lovely parents popped into Puerto Montt for two weeks of traveling through the Lakes District of Chile and Argentina. For me this meant two weeks of staying in rooms with my own bathroom and eating something other than empanadas de loco and fried salmón with papas fritas. We started our travels with a few days on the island of Chiloé to visit both historic wooden churches and Magellanic penguins. Chiloé defies the stereotype that Chile is too much like the States (a common declaration by Argentines, mind you). It's remoteness has preserved shanty fishing villages of houses mounted on stilts (palafitos), great seafood dishes such as paila marina filled with various degrees of unidentifiable local shellfish, and more than 150 wooden churches. In search for drier weather, after a few days ... read more

I was again saying goodbye to my friends and heading even more south - to the Lake District, a lovely region sprinkled with lakes and volcanoes. This time I traveled alone. I took an overnight bus to Puerto Montt (14 hrs from Santiago), at the southernmost point of this region, and the same day transferred to Puerto Varas, a small touristy town sitting on the edge of the largest lake in Chile, sharing the shore with the Volcan Osorno. I had three days to explore the oldest national park in Chile, rich in wildlife and home to the oldest standing trees in South America. I hired a local guide and with couple of horses we headed up the valley to the base of one of the volcanoes. I felt like a lazy gringo tourist - ... read more
