After a 6 hours bus ride we finally arrived at La Serena. It is a beautiful town with a Spanish feel to it. Plain color houses and businesses are part of streets that seem to have no end with tons of people going places. The Plaza de Armas is a beautiful place just to sit down and enjoy a sunny day with a cool breeze. We also visited La Recova (marketplace) where we saw numerous artisan souvenirs and where Lucy wanted to buy a basket. I stopped her before it was too late, haha. We then tried to visit the Japanese garden but it was closed. From the outside wall it looked beautiful and we´re definietly dissapointed that we missed it. At the end of the day we went over to the beach. As soon as ... read more

Disclaimer: my english is feeling slightly incoherent today, but I wanted to get this blog done now while I have internet! I just spent a WONDERFUL weekend in La Serena, it was absolutely beautiful and I spent some relaxing hours thinking, writing, and talking with my friends and Laura's host family. I arrived thursday night and spent most of Friday lounging around and talking with Tia Susy (Laura's host mom, for those of you who don't know) and then spent the evening at my friend Jovi's apartment. Then on Saturday Pito, Soto and I went to Vicuña and stayed until Sunday afternoon. Tia Susy's mother, sisters and two of Pito's cousins came over for tea Sunday and then Monday morning I hopped on a bus back to Copiapo. For those of you who didn't follow my ... read more

I got a super cheap bus ticket (about $6 US) to La Serena (a beautiful coastal city about 5 hours south of Copiapo- where Laura lived while on exchange). I spent about 5 days with Laura's host family (good friends of mine aswell, who I spent the summer with during my exchange year). It was great to see Laura's host brother Pito, and his band-mates and friends! We didn't tell any of them that I was coming so it was a lot of fun to surprise them! They've all grown up so much, I can't believe it!! I guess it's been a while since I last saw them... I went with Tia Susy (Laura's host mom) to Pito's school's anniversary event which consisted of a fashion/costume competition between classes. Pito's class did musical icons, and did ... read more

On the road to Coquimbo There is a boulder. It sits on the left side of the road Alone, before the walking overpass, before the turn of to Totoralillo beach. It called out to me, but I didn't answer. We were unable to stop. CHADWICK is it's name. I wanted to take a photograph, for this name is shared by my brother twelve thousand miles away.... read more

So this Saturday Jana and I decided to explore the area around La Serena/Coquimbo. We went to Vicuna, which is a town that is about an hour and a half by bus from La Serena. We visited the museum of Gabriela Mistral, hiked a small hill which had a view of the valley, explored the shops, and visited the Pisco Capel distillery. The museum of Gabriel Mistral was good, but would have been better if I was more familiar with her or her work. Finding where the hill was took longer than hiking up it, but it was some physical activity for the day. We took a tour of the Pisco distillery and had a small tasting afterwards. After we went back to a shop, where I wanted to buy a sweater - the lady told ... read more

I was a little disenchanted with the school when I heard the name “School of Art and Music.” If you know me at all, I am not of the artistic/musical persuasion. Sports and outdoor activities, yes, arts and crafts, no. My co-teacher, Carmen, met me at the bus station on the first day, and she seemed like a good person, so I was more excited about the school. That day she gave me a tour of the school. It is ugly, old, and poor. My classroom is tiny, made of wood, and painted pink on the outside, blue on the inside, and when it rains it rains inside too!! It’s pretty awesome! After our regional orientation during the first week of school, I learned that 5 of my 25 teaching hours/week would be with Carmen. The ... read more

So I have packed my backpacks and my suitcase and I will be going to a new home today. At the new home, there is a mother and daughter around my age. The benefits are they are nice, the neighbor is quiet, the room is bigger, and the bed is comfortable. So basically everything is better. I had a good heart to heart with Senora Nancy and we talked about the move. Apparently she never requested a foreign student, and she was informed about me coming 4 days before I arrived by the director of the school. She was upset when she first found out, but now she was fine with me being there. She didn’t like the manner in which my host teacher said I would be leaving. She told Nancy I was very ill ... read more

So we're roughly six weeks away from our trip to Chile. We will be there right now looking at 10-12 days witha total of 16 days off from work. saturday we went and applied for new passports. It was $130 each. There's also a visitors entry fee into Chile. It's $130 each also but issues you a card that is valid the life of the passport. We'll be able to return to Chile and enter fee free for the next ten years. So we're at $520 now on the costs. Our employer is a big deal cargo moving company and has perks with all major airlines. We can travel standby almost anywhere we want for a heavily discounted price. We were quoted earlier this week tickets prices for ATL-SCL-ATL at $342 + $18 process fee. so ... read more
