...and found beautiful Los Vilos, home to rolling golden beaches, friendly locals, and delicious seafood. Or not. Los Vilos (pronounced Lo Vilo), was covered in a thick sea mist for the two days we were there. Our slightly out of date travel guide highly recommended a hostal that was now a tacky souvenir shop, and we ended up in the rundown Hotel Bellavista (bellavista my arse). Undeterred, we headed towards the town's one main street, in search of alcohol and local delicacies. Stepping over the many comatose dogs that littered the dusty road, we found a tiny cafe and ordered empañadas - safe old cheese for me and adventurous ´seafood´ for Grace. Grace was kind enough to share some of hers with me, and as a result our two days in Los Vilos were spent within ... read more

I also learnt that Orion´s left shoulder is the dying red star Betelguese. Chile is particularly good for observing stars and in this area in particular they have 360 clear nights a year. From La Serena we travelled further north to the Atacama region and went through some spectacular desert. ... read more

So our next stop on our northbound trek was La Serena and the Elqui Valley, apparently a centre of mystical energy, hippies and Elqui-holics. Surrounded by arid mountains and desert, with this lush valley carving a green vein through the landscape, it´s easy to understand why people feel the valley special. We spent the night at a small town called Vicuna, and went to an observatory, which was pretty awesome, seeing Saturn and nebulae, star clusters and shooting stars. The next coupla days were spent chiling in the tiny little desert town of Pisco Elqui, with its sleepy town square occupied by hippies selling volcanic stones and trinkets. Like, very zen man. 18 hours by bus later, and we arrived in San Pedro de Atacama, a desert oasis in the middle of the Atacama desert. Surrounded ... read more
