We took a day trip outside of La Serena in the Elqui Valley and fell in love. The valley is home to some of Chile's most famous Pisco vineyards. Pisco is a liquor distilled from grapes and belongs to the brandy family of beverages. We spent much of the day in Pisco Elqui but also walked to Monte Grande along the highway. Each town is very small but all have a great, arty vibe and are very clean. We had lunch in a little place that serves, of course, Pisco Sour, the drink of Chile, but also other variations with fresh fruit blended with Pisco. I had the papaya sour and we agreed it was amazing. Perhaps the valley was also so great because the sun came out all day Sunday and it got quite warm. ... read more

We had a long weekend this past week and headed north to La Serena in the 4th region. The unfortunate weather we had the first 2 days did not keep us from loving the city. It is super clean compared to where we live and the dogs population is somewhat under control. The architecture is very different and with 29 churches in the city there was a lot to see. We stayed with my host teacher's sister, Ximena, and her husband and daughter. They were the best hosts we could have asked for and kept us fed well the whole weekend. They live the Bosque de San Carlos neighborhood outside of La Serena. We arrived on Friday before the Chile/Spain game and found it impossible to get public transportation to their house. After waiting over an ... read more

Woke up to the bus attendant kindly offering us a breakfast of biscuits, wafers and sweets, just as he’d put another film on. What a great way to be woken up! Not a very healthy breakfast admittedly but hey ho! We arrived in La Serena on time and immediately got hawked by a number of hostel workers, but once we told them we were staying at Maria’s Casa, they all let out a sigh and gave up. Was this a good sign? Hope so... We trudged up to Maria’s place, only about 5 minutes from the bus terminal and so perfectly positioned. And when we got there we discovered the reason why all the other hostel folk seemed so despondent once Maria’s name was mentioned. From the outside, the house looks tiny and barely big enough ... read more

After a long night bus, (in which I had the front seat on the top deck so I felt like I was in a video game) I arrived in La Serena. The hotel wasn't exactly my favourite what with the mold on the walls and stench of damp. Spent a bit of the afternoon watching football, browsing the super-size supermarket (seriously, this super-market novelty does not wear off in South America!) and watching TV (exciting times) until going out for dinner that evening. When we got back to the hotel, we decided to try the 'mentos in a diet coke' trick. Dropped the mento into the bottle and the coke exploded everywhere. In addition to finding Cadbury's chocolate, that was probably the highlight of my first day. At around 5.55am the next morning, there was a ... read more

We had major drama to clear the motos from customs in San Antonio, as the day we were to that, we had traveled with great expectations 120 south of Vina del Mar to the port of San Antonio. On arrival at the port we were informed that the container had been damaged in transit, so until an assessor has been we can't open the container, have you any idea how frustrating that is !!. The left hand door had a mighty whack and had been forced inwards. Now we were concerned about the state of the motos, as if the container had been dropped ????. We had to wait for the shipping company rep to arrive, but about then all decisions were taken from us as a 6.4 Teramoto (earthquake) rocked us about, power poles were ... read more

La Serena was our last stop before we had to be in Santiago to start out teaching. After non stop travelling for two months we really wanted to take it easy and relax for a couple days and this is the perfect place to do so. We were a short walk away from nice beaches along the coast and we were still pretty far north so it was very hot. We spent our days exploring the city and laying on the beach. Our third day here we went to the nearby town of Coquimbo. It was just a short ten minute bus ride away and is a port city. Here we had some great fresh sea food. The last day at the beach we met some Chilenos that were fanticos about the soccer team Universidad de ... read more

"We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking up at the stars." Oscar Wilde The area around La Serena in northern Chile boasts the clearest skies in the world, hence the white domes of observatories dot the neighbouring mountains. In amongst this belt of star gazing scientific centres is Mamalluca, a 'tourist' observatory (scientists don't like tourist hordes disturbing their work). Through a digital telescope and also a manual one, we saw star clusters, Jupiter, a red giant star and the moon up close and personal. The moon was the most impressive. Afterwards our guide gave a short talk using computer programmes (check out Starry Night and Stellarium if you are interested). I could feel myself getting smaller and smaller in my chair as the screen zoomed outwards from Earth to ... read more

We arrived in La Serena at 5.30pm on Wednesday 14 October and the three of us walked to our hostel. We stayed in a nice little triple room in the gardens of 'Maria’s Casa'. Chile was playing Ecuador at 7pm so we found a bar with a big screen and ordered a couple of pitchers of Cristal beer. There was even a TV crew in the bar filming the crowd of people anytime something exciting happened. Chile won the game and celebrations followed but nothing like that of Santiago 4 days earlier. We went for dinner in a local restaurant but the food wasn’t great. Then we returned to our room and had a relatively early night. We all slept until midday and then we walked into town and went for lunch at the café in ... read more

I just got back from La Serena, about 6 hours up north on the coast. We went for the independence (September 18th) but didn´t do much celebrating. We walked along the boardwalk for about two hours, until we got to an amazing seafood restaurant. The guy we were staying with (from couchsurfing.org) wined and dined us but was a little annoying- inviting himself everywhere and due to his lack of self-confidence acted as if he knew everyyything. Anyways, we stuffed ourselves with great fish, sauces, wine and empanadas then took about a two hour nap on the beach. That night we went to the neighboring town, Coquimbo, and went to a few bars that were full of karoke and fiestas de las patrias. The next day we took a bus about an hour out to Vicuña ... read more

The further north we get the more arid and deserty it becomes. It's such a contrast from the lush Lake District down south. La Serena isn't far from the beach, but the weather still wasn't warm enough to get our shorts out. The first thing that happened in La Serena was that we got fleeced by the taxi driver. Gringo prices and all that, but I wasn't in the mood for arguing it. We'd had an early start and a long eight hour bus trip. It was only by a euro in the end, and in the grand scheme of things it was better to let it go. He brought us to a funky hostel called Aji Verde. We grabbed some dinner from the local deli counter and arranged the two tours that we wanted to ... read more
