So, wandering around the lovely village happen across a horse riding tour for that afternoon. 4 hours up in the high Andes. The saleswoman showed me photos of what I would be up to, trek through the mountains, traverse rivers, amazing views. The package looked good and for £25 quid I was in. So duly at the appointed hour arrived and met my fellow cowboys for the afternoon. Those of you following my adventure know that nothing ever goes to plan and so before I begin my tale a few introductions of my fellow riders are in order: Andres, an American engineer now residing in Santiago. From Chilean heritage he grew up in Florida. As tall as me and I guess the same build. With Andres was his delightful and very attractive chilean girlfriend Claudia, a critical ... read more

Book I am reading. Alex Cross's Trail by James Patterson. A true story about the events of lynching in the deep south and one mans campaign against it. Compelling and tearful reading. . I am writing this sat under a cloudless sky by a hostel swimming pool. It is 8.45am. All around there are the mountains of the Andes, in every conceivable shade of brown. The green of the garden in which I am sat is a stark contrast reminding me that I am between the desert of the north and the fertile soil of the south. It is very peaceful with only the sound of a cockerel breaking the silence as he welcomes a new day. Yesterday I finally managed to speak to a manager at my bank. My cards have now been cancelled again ... read more

The bus ride to La Serena was packed with movies and entertainment for me as Sarah slept. We passed through a few wind farms (Vestas machines). Zookeeper, in spanish but with english subtitles. Muppets in english. It was great. But then they threw on this Bimbo Fico guy, a comedian who is shown on a number of buses. Sometimes people like him, other times no. I do not understand anything he says. He looks a bit creepy though and his style is very different than comedians I see on TV. He is decked out in this white suit with a white top hat. He look like an evil circus guy from a movie. Anyway, we arrived in La Serena with 2 hours before dark, so we set off quickly to find a hostal. And finally, there ... read more

After I had left Herb & Ron I headed back into Copiapo, to the main plaza, Plaza Prat. I had decided I couldn't be bothered to ride up the Rio Copiapo valley to see some grapes. I would rather look round the museum. I pulled up in the space reserved for "motos" that Herb & I caught up with Ron earlier that morning. The museum was a short walk round the corner but it was closed. I wasn't too surprosed as it was nearly 3 pm and everywhere was still shut. The sign on the gate seemed to suggested it opened again at 3.30 so I headed back to the square. Opposite the bike was a pleasant little cafe that had out door seating and was open. I took Ron's advice. The best place is where ... read more

Hi all, This is my last day in Pisco Elqui, a beautiful little town in the mountains which I have completely fallen in love with. I´ve spent about 5 days here so I´ll just give you the highlights. On the bus from La Serena I met a guy from Italy who has been here 5 times in his life as he loves it that much (so that might give an idea of how enchanting this place is!) We spent most of the day just taking in the views of the plaza and the mountains, and went to a little restaurant to have some empanadas - so yummy! The following day I bumped into some guys from Argentina and we went to a pisco distillery in the town. The entire tour was in Spanish but luckily they ... read more

A 6-hour bus journey does not sound like fun but the bus ride from Santiago to La Serena was actually pretty awesome. I parked myself right at the front of the bus so that I could get the best views and was definately not disappoined. My fellow passengers seemed less than excited and spent most of the journey asleep so in comparison I must have looked like an excited puppy whipping my head back and forth to check out the surroundings. I was in full-on tourist mode so I even got a couple of photos although sadly they never come out as good as you hope. One other passenger who was awake however, was an adorable little Chilean girl who I seemed to make friends with despite neither of us understanding anything that the other one ... read more

La Serena is one of Chile’s oldest cities, founded in 1544.It was the main staging post on the route north to Peru; many of the religious orders built churches and convents here providing accommodation for their members, and the city still has 29 churches. Some people went to Coquimbo to see the big cross, the Cruz del Tercer Milenio (Spanish for "Third Millennium Cross"). It is 83m tall and 40m wide and you can see it from La Serena. Some of us decided to walk to the beach where the lighthouse is. On the way there we walked by Parque Pedro de Valdivia where there was small zoo / aviary with llama, alpaca, some domestic fowl (chicken, ducks, geese), parrots, emu and ostrich. There was also a rink where some kids were playing roller hockey which ... read more

We arrived in Santiago at about 5:30AM. After paying the $132 USD reciprocity fee immigration was a breeze.I got some money out of an ATM (they all seem to charge a $2500 Chilean peso service fee, on top of whatever your bank charges) and was soon on my way with TransVip airport shuttle for only $6000 peso to meet the rest of the group. Today was essentially a travel day, with a 7-hr bus ride to La Serena. For some bizarre reason we boarded a bus at the central bus station to take us to another station where the La Serena bus was waiting. It was only about a 10-min transfer but I quickly dozed off, from the lack of sleep on the trans-equatorial flight. The hotel we stayed at was Hotel El Escorial. It was ... read more

Leaving the cold South of Chile we were heading for the metropolitan area of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, which are two cities that have almost merged over the years. Valparaiso is a city of students and artists, build on a lot of beautiful hills, whereas Vina del Mar is more a tourist centre, but still nice. Both have their charm, no doubts, but we soon remembered that neither of us is a big-city-person and so we left after two days (even one half of each of these two we spent outside the cities). The surrounding areas are a mixture of tourist towns, epic beaches and industry zones with big carbon power plants and oil refineries. Chile is definitely the most developed South American country; however in this area you can experience the downside on wealth fare ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » Vicuna August 23rd 2011

Vicuna--Smiles and Tears Leaving coastal La Serena, the little local bus was crammed to the aisles as we headed up the Elqui Valley. We passed fertile farmlands, then hills covered with saguaro-like cactus, tiny adobe pueblos, a dam that created a lake submerging vineyards on its edges and finally regal views of the snow-capped Andes. After an hour, we arrived at Vicuna, the largest town in the valley. Still, Vicuna is a relatively small town of 25,000; as in most such places, people are initially wary of out-of-towners--those who stay a day or two and pronounce the town boring. I am clearly a foreigner, for one just doesn't see middle-aged Chilean women with hiking boots and a pony tail. However, whenever I smiled and said, "Hola, buenos dias" to residents, their faces broke into the most ... read more
