NOTE: Please forgive the delay. I've been without Internet for the better part of two weeks and will do my best to get caught up ASAP. With only one night at sea between Puerto Montt, Chile and Puerto Chacabuco, Chile, the ship surely wasn’t expected to arrive at zero-dark-thirty on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Indeed, MS Volendam was not scheduled to set anchor for tendering operations in Puerto Chacabuco until 10:00 AM with the last tender departing the pier at 5:30 PM. That made for a short day of tourism ashore. Puerto Chacabuco, Chile is situated in the Patagonia Region of South America. Patagonia comprises the southern section of the Andes Mountains with lakes, fjords, temperate rainforests, and glaciers in the west; and deserts, plains and grasslands in the east. The Pacific Ocean lies to the ... read more

The weather certainly changed as we came north through the Patagonian Fiords, rain, wind, mist, and lower temperatures. Not as low as the Antarctic but it felt much colder with the wind chill factor. Photos are not very good with all the rain and mist. A few sea days have seen playing games - chess, rummicub and catching up on reading. In one of the fiords we passed a wreck caused by a confusion between right, left, starboard and port. I hope the officers on board the Zaandam, know the difference. A couple of small ports have been interesting, Puerto Chacabuco and Castro. From Puerto Chacabuco we travelled over the Andes, albeit the lowest part of them, to the capital of the region Coyhaique which is on the eastern side of the Andes not in Argentina. ... read more

Overnight we sailed 283 nautical miles at a average speed of 18.3 knots and at 09:54 we arrived in Puerto Chacabuco where the weather was much more promising than it was yesterday. Bernie looked into using a private tour operator here, but had difficulty contacting them so decided it might be best to book the ship's excursion to Northern Patagonia and Coyhaique City. We drove from Puerto Chacabuco through forested landscape to the Simpson River Reserve and a little further along the road to the Virgin Waterfall. After a brief stop at the waterfall we continued on to Coyhaique City. While the first mountain and valley were quite lush and forested as we continued inland the landscape became much drier and harsher. Coyhaique is the capital of the Aisén region and actually sits high in the ... read more

PUERTO CHACABUCO, CHILE--Wednesday, December 4, 2013 45 degrees with scattered showers. Puerto Chacabuco is located at the head of the Aisén (sometimes Aysen) Fjord and is the main port of the region. The Aisén Fjord, formed by a glacier, is about 70 km (42 miles) long and provided access to the port. Until 1991, the main port was Puerto Aisén, four miles upstream on the Aisén River, which silted up with the eruption of the Mount Hudson volcano and erosion from heavy logging in the mountains. Before we left home, I had contacted a guide through an organization called “Tours by Locals” and Valerie had contacted 2 couples from the “Cruise Critic” website to make the van load complete and the fee divide among 6. To prevent anyone being left behind, we all agreed ... read more

The elevators greet us as they have every morning, informing us today that it is Monday. We made our way to the Lido at 6:45 AM to start with the continental breakfast, only to find the full buffet up and serving people. I guess there were a lot of complaints about the full buffet not being ready early when there were so many early tours. I am again had a bowl of oatmeal, but couldn’t help adding a side of pork link sausages and potatoes. Sharon stuck with her single slice of French toast and bacon. We both had some apple juice. The Lido was crowded when we got there, so it looks like a lot of tour goers today. We were in the “RED 2” tour group (with HAL’s reddish orange sticker badge). The “tour ... read more
