Faith again here. We drove to Florianopolis on sunday and went right on through. The capital of Santa Catarina, "Floripa" is half on the mainland and half on Ilha (Island) de Santa Catarina. Most of the Ilha is BEACHES and small towns supported by tourism. its the off season now, so we got a room with a porch facing Praia da Joaquina, on the east side of the island and facing open ocean. Praia da Joaquina hosts the Brazilian Surfing championships every year, so every day by 7 or 8am there would be twenty surfers in the water right by our hotel, and that number would grow and top out at about 50 or 60. The beach was pretty long - it took over 2 hours to walk to the end, one way - and there ... read more

Hey all, this is faith writing. i arrived in rio on the 9th and bru and i spent a night in rio. the waves were really big on the beach by our hotel, and there were tons of surfers out. We drove through sao paolo, spent a night on the road, and then arrived in Curitiba, the capital city of the state of Parana. We stayed at a hotel across from a park, and at the end of pedestrian mall. All day and into the evening the mall was filled with people shopping and eating at the sidewalk cafes, even when it dropped to the 50s at night. Good weather for sipping quentao - similar to mulled wine - and people watching. It gets dark around 6pm because its winter, but everyone stays outside to socialize, ... read more

The bus arrived in Manaus at 6 am. When I got out off the bus I had a temperature shock. It was so hot and humid at 6 am, I couldn’t imagine how it would be at noon. I had 21 hours to kill in Manaus before my flight to Belo Horizonte, the end of my trip. I had originally planned to take a boat down the Amazon River to Belem (4 days), and the bus from there to Belo Horizonte (3 days), but I have to be home before the end of the week, so I substituted a 4-hour flight for the 7-day land trip. Manuas is the only large city in the Amazon, with 1.5 million people. It lies by Rio Negro, which becomes Rio Amazonas just a few miles to the east. There ... read more

We are always keen to know more locals, specially backpackers that are not on the road. Have nice conversation about traveling and exchanging experiences, everything tasting nice local beers. So, if you would like only to drink a beer with us or even have two crazy Brazilians staying over (following the principle of couchsurf.com or hospitalityclub.org), we would love to be invited...hehehe. We are not area restricted, so you can invite from anywhere in the world. Leave in the comment area of this post your invitation and for sure we will be with you once we arrive in your city/country. This is Vincent. To be honest the idea of having an entry for friends we made on our way, came from his web site(www.planetvince.com). This friendly Irish guy, with his 40 centimeter beard, is always the central attraction for the locals when walking on the streets!! His Irish accent is almost incomprehensible, but fits very well with his role of a drug dealer in the movie he took part in when he was in India. He is a very funny guy, but he's always complaining about being bored.... hehehe. We first met in Istanbul and then in Olympus, where we started to travel together until parting in Syria. We met him for the third time while . He is member of the group. ... read more

We spent several days in Brazil. We stopped in Curitiba, in the state of Parana, in southern Brasil, where we saw Don's former student Sergio Ahrens, his wife Suzanne, and their family. We then moved on to Rio de Janeiro. There, we walked Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, rode the cablecar to the top of Sugarloaf (the famous headland at the entrance to Rio's harbor), and rode the cog train up to to the Christ the Redeemer statue, high atop a mountain overlooking the city and harbor. Rio's setting is spectacularly beautiful.... read more

So i took the famous "Death Train" a 22 hour train journey from Santa Cruz to the border of Brazil. The ticket was only 3.50gbp! you couldnt even get a cheap day return to Edinburgh for that! My last couple of days in Santa Cruz were great. I explored the market thoroughly and got lost many many times. I also met alot of really cool people but it was time to move on, Buenas Aires is a long way away and I had a lot of ground to cover to get there in time to meet Laura again. I had to queue for 2 and a half hours to buy my ticket and in the queue I met a really nice english girl who was travelling with 5 english friends and also a Canadian called Jaslyn ... read more

Although Caracas wasn't at all appealing, after some time travelling you start appreciating different things and the usual turist stuff is not that interesting anymore. I think that's why I enjoyed the five days I stayed there, in spite of the ugly place. Eva was still too weak to take care of herself, so I stayed longer than I had originally planned. She was going to fly back to the Netherlands on July 31. We went back to the doctor several times to take more tests and by the time I left, on the 30th, she was a lot better. I had two options to get to Brazil from Caracas. There is a convenient and comfortable direct bus, with bed-like seats (buscama), but it would go through the south of Venezuela and north of Brazil, areas ... read more
