Curumba Curumba Curumba! well the place was lovely, the weather stupidly hot, and the hostel, well i have a lot to say about the hostel! it was another hosteling international hostel we´ve stayed in three now so we thought this one would be as lovely and as helpful as the last...wrong! firstly they trie to charge us R$25 each for a dorm room with shared bathroom, so we laughed and faught it down to 17 each, the place was lovely the building clean and bright, the staff as miserable as sin. We decided to go to bolivia from Curumba so needed tickets for the death train, so we agreed to buy them through the hostel as it was a much easier option (at this point i will say if you do want death train tickets DO ... read more

so i left off on thursday but didn't go into much detail about what had gone on that day specifically. i feel like i'm summarizing the last several days each time i write, but i don't write about the present. so here's the last couple days, again! i went to the GYAN office on thursday and met barbara and jefferson, two people who work there. barbara is my age and jefferson is a little older, i think mid-20s. they were telling me all about GYAN/TakingITGlobal TakingITGlobal and some of the projects and events they have sponsored/hosted. jefferson is also working on ICFC. then i got a brief analysis of brazilian political history from the dictatorship until now. basically, every time there's been a president, something happens and the second in command gains power. so now theres ... read more

Well first things frist, we~ve put up a load more photos, including our Pantanal trip ones, so check them out. We put the Bonito ones on the Pantanal blog, and vise versa... by mistake. We´ve now departed sunny Bonito and arrived in sunny Curumba - it´s been consistenty in the 30s the last few days. Tans are coming on nicely, and a little bit of sunburn too - even though laura was wearing factor 50, grr. Anyway, as we said before, Bonito was just a dirty track, basically. We saw people quad biking around the place which looked like fun, but we decided against it as you can do it anywhere, and on Friday went ´tubing´down a river of the clearest water we have ever seen! even in the deepest parts you could see all the ... read more

Bonito is beautiful. The dust roads stretch through town like an Oxfam advertisement, yet the local economy is booming thanks to the diamond-clear idyllic waters flowing in scenic forest nearby. We stumbled off the night-bus, knackered. Travelling is exceptionally tiring anyway, and especially so on a budget where one’s feet are the primary method of transportation and map-reading suffers due to disturbed sleep in noisy dorm rooms. When time is tight, the urge to fill every waking hour with activity is so strong that the traveller eventually finds themselves so completely knackered that there is no option but to do nothing. Like in school, too much learning causes lethargy, and without a break it becomes a chore rather than an activity. But then you stumble upon a place like Bonito. So charming and relaxing that nothing ... read more

I am really bad with keeping up with this journal. Although I havent gotten home until midnight the past three nights and had to get up around 7 so i guess its excusable, no? Lets see...Sao Paulo itself is huge, a bit overwhelming, but in a good way. Im not really sure how to describe it because there are so many different areas. one good thing about having to cruise around in taxis is that i get to see all these neighborhoods that i wouldnt otherwise see. like all these offices are in business-y areas, not touristy areas. there isnt really one ´touristy´area from what i can tell, although there arent many tourists here now so i guess im not sure. but i havent done anything touristy like museums just because ive been soo busy! portuguese ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pará » Ilha de Marajó July 27th 2005

So from Belem we got on a riverboat and headed three hours up the Amazon to the Ilha de Marajó. The island is slightly larger than Switzerland and famous for two things - buffalo (which thrive in the swamp conditions) and the scarlet guara birds we encountered in Cabure. Grassy streets where the buffalo roam , beaches , miles and miles of green make this a truly beautiful island and we had a fantastic time there. The first night we stayed in a beautiful pousada set right on top of the ocean. It was that night we ate buffalo steak for the first time (and i tell you it is good) ; whats better though is buffalo cheese - my god its delicious .. After the first night we decided we wanted to try and find ... read more

South America » Brazil » Tocantins » Palmas July 27th 2005

Next stop - Palmas - capital of the newly formed Tocantins state and a city created only 20 years ago. The city is set in a beautiful location , next to a river with mountains as a backdrop. Only one thing - there doesnt actually seem to be that many people living there. We walked around the centre during the day , hardly any people , no cars on the road - it was completely bizarre - like a ghost town. Oh yeah - the other thing about Palmas - it is sold as the ecotourism capital of Tocantins - it´s not - plain and simple. We desperately wanted to arrange a trip to the Ilha de Bananal from an agency in Palmas and no person or agency could help us. It got so bad that ... read more

From São Luis a thirteen hour bus took us to Belem. It really does have the feel of the oldest Amazon port. We had a cool time in Belem, we visited the beautiful botanical gardens where they have a large amount of animals - some live in cages (which we didnt like) , most didnt (which is much better) . It was also where we saw the peixe-boi (Amazonian manatee) a weird river animal (and very rarely seen). We also managed to see a 3 toed sloth - having never seen one before it was a treat - they really do move in slow motion .. Belem also recently converted its docks into a really snazzy waterside place , with loads of restaurants and cafes , live music and a generally good atmosphere. All in all ... read more

check out the photos on the previous entry. those from liberdade are from after-sushi tonight. liberdade is the japantown of sao paulo. its full of good japanese restaurants, homeless people, cops, and trash flooding into the streets. check out the moon - its a half moon but by half i mean the bottom half. weird. earlier today i got to meet laurent, the chef involved in botanique and also one of (if not THE) best chef in brazil. he is to brazilian cuisine what bobby flay is to american southwestern, except more, because he's the only chef in brazil that places value and refinement on traditional brazilian food and ingredients. and i get to read his cookbooks tomorrow!!!! more on that later. i think there was just a bombing in sao paulo. just kidding. some big ... read more

From Paulinho Neves we went about an hour up the beach to Cabure. Normally this wouldnt be a major event - however we hired a local guy to take us in his buggy - he was cheaper than the rest - on the journey we discovered why - he basically couldnt drive on sand - which is kind of a key criteria for driving along the beach at reasonable high speeds ! After nearly throwing us out of the buggy twice and then getting a flat tyre - we decided that a 20 minute walk with the backpacks in the baking heat wouldnt be such a bad idea !! Cabure is a bizare place - it is basically a piece of sand - with a major river on one side and the sea on the other. ... read more
