Enjoyed seeing Brazil a lot! It was a biggest accomplishment of my life because I've seen every part and every country in the globe which was extremely impressive. I gpt to finally see Rio De Janiero Christ the Redeemer, Brazil! I really enjoyed seeing that! I got to pray and also got to get a picture of the Christ. However, COVID-19 restrictions were still in place which I don't know now. But what I know is that you may have to wear a mask in case if you visit all the way up there. To get to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; you can take Delta Airlines (most common airline to take via Atlanta on to Rio); Copa Airlines, etc. The best part about the Brazil trip I flew First Class as well as I got to ... read more

Sugar loaf mountain Sugar Loaf, Portuguese Pão de Açúcar, landmark peak overlooking Rio de Janeiro Named for its shape, the conical, granitic peak (1,296 feet ) lies at the end of a short range between Rio de Janeiro and the Atlantic Ocean. At its base is the fortress of São João. The name Sugarloaf was coined in the 16th century by the Portuguese during the heyday of sugarcane of trade in Brazil. According to historians blocks of sugar were placed in conical molds made of clay to be transported on ships. The form of the peak reminded them of the well-known resulting”sugarloaf” shape, and the nickname has since been extended to be a general descriptor for formations of this kind We took the cable car runs to its summit from the adjacent Urca Hill with a ... read more

Iguazu Falls Declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1984, Iguazu Falls is often quoted as the world’s most spectacular waterfall. Situated on the border of the Brazil & Argentina the Falls spans 1.7 miles in width, and features 275 individual waterfalls, with heights ranging from 196-270ft. The name ‘Iguazu’ is loosely translated from the indigenous Guarani language as “big water”. The falls form part of both the Iguacu National Park (Argentina) and the Iguazu National Park (Brazil), which have both been declared World Heritage sites. Approximately, 80% of the falls are located in Argentina and 20% in Brazil. Today on our virtual tour we were in Brazil. Our guide was very knowledgable and it was interesting to hear her stories. Saturday 8th February & Sunday 9th February 2020 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil It was a good idea to get an extra day in Rio and after a fairly bumpy 11 ½ hour flight we ended up at the airport 20.30pm ( Brazil time which is 3hrs behind UK time!). It’s a good job we didn’t leave it until the Sunday as UK was hit by Storm Ciara, loads of BA flights were cancelled and the storm made headline news!! A smooth transfer to the Hilton Hotel, Copacabana Beach, (1 hr 20mins) a quick pack of the day bag for tomorrow and a look at the Roof Top Bar with its infinity pool and views of the beach and Christ the Redeemer ( that actually looks very small!) and that was us done. Five hours sleep and ... read more

Little Red Riding Hood goes girl power - and a lot more All photos in this blog entry is of street art. First of all we want to point out that we make a difference between street art and graffiti. Street art is often, not always but often, permitted and sometimes even commissioned. Street art is created with the main purpose of transforming a dull wall into something more interesting. Graffiti, on the other hand, is mostly rubbish and vandalism and not something we condone. Some of the best street art totally rivals high quality art in major art galleries. What we also like about street art is that it is free of charge to enjoy and that we can look at it while we are doing other sightseeing. Also looking for street art might involve ... read more

Rio de Janeiro has much more than Copacabana and the Jesus statue The second half of our vacation in Brazil we spent in Rio de Janeiro - a city that was a lot more interesting than we expected. For some reason we didn't think much of Rio when we arrived. We thought: "A famous beach and a concrete Jesus on top of a mountain and that's probably it." It therefore came as a very pleasant surprise that there was so much to discover beyond the big well-known attractions. Rio de Janeiro is a city with so much charm. A bit rough on the edges and it might be argued that it even is a bit run down. But we loved that roughness. Also add that the city has exciting architecture from at least three different centuries ... read more

There is a chunk of Finland hidden in Rio De Janeiro State Over Christmas and New Year we went to Brazil for two weeks. Brazil is a huge country so we only had time to roam around a little bit in Rio de Janeiro State. Here we are going to write about what we saw during those days of this trip when we rented a car and drove around the state. Arraial do Cabo We started this trip in Arraial do Cabo, a coastal town a few hours drive east of Rio de Janeiro. It is a typical bathing resort town where most everything revolves around the beach and the marina. The marina sees action because the various boat tours leave from there. We went to Arraial do Cabo mainly to celebrate Christmas with some relatives. ... read more

During breakfast this morning we made a last minute decision to switch our plans for the day and do an historical walking tour. We were very pleased that we changed our plans. We learned a lot about the history of Rio. Our guide was English speaking and was very informative. Our first stop was the Convent of Saint Anthony. It is the oldest religious site in Rio. We learned an interesting fact about St. Anthony in Rio. She asked what people pray to St. Anthony for. A couple from New York and I both said he helps find lost items. Not here though. She said he is the Patron Saint of Marriage. The story goes if you want to find a spouse you fill a bowl of water and put in a statue of St. Anthony ... read more
