Today was a long day but a most enjoyable one. It began with breakfast in the hotel restaurant serving eggs, sausage, bacon, sweets, fruits, lunchmeats, cheeses, cereal, yogurt, breads, juices, coffee or tea. It was a very nice beginning to our day. Since there was so much ground to cover today with sights we wanted to see we decided to go with a tour group which worked out very well. Our first stop was at the Seleron Steps. These were created by a Chilean born artist, Jorge Seleron, as a tribute to the Brazilian people. He covered the steps between the neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa with ceramic tiles in the color of the Brazilian flag. He began in 1990 and completed them in 2013 after covering them with over 2000 tiles with 300 of ... read more

We began the morning high in the sky, arriving in Rio De Janeiro around 11 a.m. We departed from Toronto yesterday with a two hour stop in Houston. It was a long night but were two good flights. We had previously arranged for a shuttle pick up at the airport to transport us to our hotel. The van arrived as scheduled with two personnel that only spoke Portuguese. the girl had an app on her phone which she used to translate and communicate with us so it all worked out well. It was about an eleven mile trip to our hotel and I was sure glad I wasn't driving. There is a great deal of traffic here and driving a little chaotically for me but then they are used to it and know where they are ... read more

We are off traveling again! We are venturing on a trip across our fifth continent and 26th country which involves South America. Our trek will include (1.) Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, (2.) Buenos Aires Argentina, and (3.) Santiago, Chile. From the world-famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema to the huge summit of Corcovado topped with the legendary Christ the Redeemer statue, Rio combines some big natural attractions with a sprawling metropolis that makes it one of the most visited destinations in the world. We understand that there will be a lot of Samba music playing endlessly around Rio. We could come back knowing how to Samba. There is a little concern regarding communication. About 80% of the people only speak Portuguese or Spanish. This could be an interesting challenge. Buenos Aires has been a vacation destination for ... read more

After a long day of travel from Foz De Iguazu, I had finally reached the city of Rio De Janeiro. I had started my trip in Peru, all the way on the Pacific side of the continent, and several weeks and thousands of kilometers later I was now on the Atlantic. The sun had dipped and I ordered an Uber to take me into town. Shawn had already arrived several hours earlier, and had rented us an Air BnB condo for the next few days in the fancy district of Ipanema; known for its shops, cafes, and beach. I had heard loads of things about Rio, but having enough travel experience I've learned to come to my own realizations. Still, like many other cities, it's important to keep your head up and eyes open. Also probably ... read more

So I will get to the Brazil vacation a bit after, as I think the first thing we all need to address here is the cat bacchanal that was occurring in my backyard during the month of August…I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this before, but there are quite a few feral cats that live in and around our property here in Santiago. Usually, they are nothing more than the occasional nuisance, maybe get into a garbage bag now and then, until August arrived…which is apparently when all the horny kitty’s come out to play! This included possible erotic meowing which kept us up at night, a number of loud cat fights, and oh… a dead cat that we found on our patio one Saturday morning (maybe forgot the safe word?)….poor Zoe was traumatized. After asking ... read more

Letitia was a very pleasant way to say goodbye to Colombia and a simple amble along Independacia saw us in Tabatinga and Brasil. Sure enough the Esmeralda, certainly not the most modern of the ferries running this stretch of the Rio Amazonia, was in dock. However, markedly different to our previous experience of Amazonian ferries there were no livestock onboard, which was good: cattle attract all manner of biting beasties. It is actually here, pre-boarding, that immigration and security perform last minute checks to see whether they'll let you steam-on into Brasil proper. And departing from Colombia they are pretty thorough. Passports scrutinized (there was no askance for evidence of onward transport out of Brasil and our fake tickets proved an unnecessary precaution), all bags were laid out into lines and a rather unlikely-looking pooch (hell, ... read more
