06.10. 3 hour bus trip and 1.5 hour boat trip to Ilha Grande, one of the most beautiful Islands in Brazil. The bus was tiny and so was the boat, it was more like a dingy than a boat really. Lol but the sun was out again, so caught a little suntan on the way over to the Island. Ilha Grande has no cars and no proper roads, just a really chilled out place to relax. Lots of nice restaurants, a few bars and many trekking routes around the Island. We stayed at the Beergarden hostel, which was only built in 2010, so brand new beds and restaurant, a great place for 24 rais a night. We had a stroll around the centre, went down the beach for a beer and an acai and had some ... read more

So this past weekend I went to São Paulo and I stayed with Douglas' brother, his wife Maristela, and their son Diego who is my age. In Brazil, people usually live at home while they go to college and don't usually move out of their parents' house until they get married. I can't understand why they don't want to get out and be independent. They can't understand why I'd want to give up cleanliness and home-cooked meals and free rent, and I.....ok I think they might be onto something. ANYWAY: I had an awesome weekend. Friday morning I got up early and explored downtown Campinas with Sonia (and the BEAUTIFUL cathedral that I forgot to take my camera to). Then I went to the hospital with the dogs and had to go back to the Mental ... read more

I've been settling into Brazilian life pretty well...I technically have 3 jobs but one hasn't started yet so pretty busy! Wednesday and Friday I leave at 7am for Campinas. In the morning I hang out at this organization called Vovo Nestor and they do things like arts and crafts and dance classes for the poor people that live in that area. Then at 1pm I go to pick up dogs from a local vet and bring them to the hospital. Wednesday is a children's hospital and Friday is a big hospital with everything. This is my favorite part of the day. While most of the people we see are different every week, some people are really ill and live in the hospital. These people (mostly kids with really bad disabilities) are hooked up to a machine ... read more

Hey guys! Kayaking was lots of fun, luckily no capsizing disasters! Gave our arms a good little work out too, stretched out the arms later in the bar with our free capriniahs to ensure no aching arms the next day... just aching heads!! We attempted to get a bus to see the waterfalls the next day, however just missed it and took a bus to Trinidade instead where there was another beautiful bay and long white beach. We woke up early Wednesday to get our last breakfast on the beach before going to get the bus to Sao Paulo. We arrived around 6pm yesterday and took the Metro across town to Solange´s apartment. Solange is one of Alans family friends who lives in Sao Paulo and has been kind enough to put us up for a ... read more

Holaaa.. After I enjoyed my last days in Buenos Aires with ice cream (which everyone told me was supposed to be the best in whole South America!) and a crazy last night with the guys who are travelling on their motorbikes (as they arrived in B.A. on Thursday :-)) I really make it to get to Brasil. As the ash cloud of the volcano is still around there are always some flight which were cancelled. On Friday (when I left) the first flights in the morning to Brasil were all cancelled. After coming to the airport (of course I called them before) the told me that the maybe have to cancel my flight anyway..but as I am a lucky girl wind changed and everything was fine. I even met another nice person to drink a coffee ... read more

It has been the plan for some time to skip quickly through Brazil. There are notions of another trip that would give greater respect and time to the world's 5th largest nation. Such a trip might, or might not, swing through the Caribbean, have a look at Venezuela, Guyana and Surinam, then take in a World Cup game or two and have a better look at Brazil, perhaps duck over to Malvinas/Falklands and even have a bit of a poke about in Antarctica with a little hiking in Torres del Paine to round things out. This time there were just two items on the agenda: check out Iguacu Falls and then get ourselves smartly over to Sao Paulo to catch planes. So we have certainly not given Brazil anything more than a glance. After 6 months ... read more

Foz do Iguaçu, or Iguazu Falls, was supposed to be one of the most impressive sights in the world. We had already decided that to do Brazil justice would require far more time than the week we had, so we had decided to leave the country for another day. There was time, however, to see Iguazu. The bus was pretty straight forward from Campo Grande and we arrived in Foz do Iguaçu to find a place to stay. The place we had booked was weird. It had once been a large hotel, fallen into disrepair, and was now being restored as a more budget place. The room we got could be generously described as modern institutional in character, but was comfortable enough. To see the falls you really have to look at both sides – the ... read more

Well we are back in Australia after the most amazing holiday. We have been very lucky to have experienced all that we have and did. We had a really interesting trip home. After leaving Sao Paulo in Brazil, flying out at 5.40pm on the Wednesday, we arrived in Santiago, Chile. Before our departure time to Auckland, there was an announcement that our flight was cancelled until Friday. However, a short while later we found out that LAN Airlines was trying to arrange another solution. This change was due to the volcanic ash from the Chile volcano that was creating havoc for all airlines scheduling, particularly around the NZ area. After a 3 hour wait, we boarded the plane to fly back to Australia via Tahiti. After 9 or so hours, we arrived there only to sit ... read more

We had a 4 ½ hour flight from Manaus to Sao Paul, watching 1 & ¾ movies, arriving at 9.00pm. Sao Paulo is a big city, the 3rd largest in the world after Tokyo and Jakarta. As soon as we collected our bags, we could tell this city was one of the most advanced cities in South America. The bus system alone, from the airport was sophisticated and a well oiled machine. By a mixture of bus a taxi, we arrived at our hotel just before 11.00pm. On settling into our hotel, we were back in thick sheets, bar fridge, hot shower, flat-screen TV, drinking water from the taps and putting toilet paper in the toilet rather than in a waste paper basket. I don’t think I have mentioned this before, but pipes throughout South ... read more

I spent the last week of my trip in São Paulo, the richest city of Brazil. I had a great time, got to see big parts of this huge city, tried a lot of different food (Patty, I'll need a list with the names!), enjoyed all these great, fresh, colourful fruits, went dancing samba and sertanejo, made Brazilian friends, tried to survive with my 10 Portuguese words (I can read a lot in Portuguese, but why does it have to sound so differently when people speak?!?), and spent the weekend on the farm of Patty's family, 2h away from the city, where we drank caipirinhas, and enjoyed the sun and the amazing landscape. I can't talk about Brazil since I saw only one city, but I can say that São Paulo is different from everything I've ... read more
