Day One Down Yesterday I arrived in my new home with wide eyes, ready for whatever life wants to throw at me. After a full 24 hours in this country, I feel I can safely say that this is going to be the experience of a lifetime. After a rocky start to our trip, with multiple flight cancellations resulting in a 24 hour late arrival, classmate and friend Rachael Klarich and I finally boarded a flight from Houston, TX direct to São Paulo, Brasil at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the 12th. I was indescribably excited to be almost there, and therefore slept for no more than an hour total on the 9 1/2 hour flight. In that 9+ hours, all I could think of was how lucky I am to get to do this again. ... read more

Everyone’s got some top destinations in their mind that they dream of visiting some day. Brazil was one of those destinations that Sarah and I shared. A seemingly endless coastline of beaches, the sand, the sea, samba, football, fute-volley, Rio, Sao Paulo, Iguazu Falls, the Amazon, Carnival, etc, etc, etc ..Brazil oozes sexiness and plain old FUN. These people would know how to party. So we were going there. Enjoy the upcoming blogs, photos, videos and please feel free to share any recommendations! We are again fortunate to have friends on foreign shores. Natalia and her family live in Sao Paulo, so that is where our Brazilian adventure begins. Arriving in Sao Paolo around 6pm on Friday December 10th with our backpacks in tow we were armed with our new Brazilian Portuguese pocket book and hyped ... read more

We arrived in Sao Paulo Saturday morning with low expectations. I knew that unless the food was over the top, we would likely be disappointed with the city, as I hadn't heard anything overly positive about it. One thing became apparent very quickly and that was how expensive it is here. We actually found it more expensive in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro than we did in Tokyo last year... I'm not sure if that is more indicitive of how bad things are in Japan or how good they are in Brazil. On first impression, Sao Paulo didn't have that boom feel to it like a typical Chinese city does these days. I really didn't even see a construciton crane in the sky... Most of the buildings looked like they were built from the 1950's ... read more

After a not so painful, 6 hour bus journey and a straight forward subway ride we arrived at our hostel GOL. Grabbing an early night, with sheets as football flags!, we hit the hay in anticipation of checking out Brazils biggest city the following day. The next day we set out in the baking34 degree heat and got our wondering boots on. Sao Paulo is a vast metropolis with skyscrapers reaching to the clouds, whilst small bar and restaurants hug the small streets below. The city reminded me a lot of Bangkok in Thailand in layout and sweltering city temperature. We ampled through the streets, viditing a food market and eating Japanese fried delights, ice creams and drinking Grape Fanta (amazing), stopping to check out a street performance of two 50 something gentlemen, freestyling at each ... read more

Long flight, OK though, apart from 1) nearly not being let on the flight as i couldnt prove I was going to leave Brasil with no onward travel booked. (apparently cos we are well out of order to brasilians entering the UK, they have stepped up their security for us). Eventually I persuaded the manager that the fact I had flights booked from Peru to Panama, Costa Rica to Cuba and Cuba back to Scotland (good job my sis gave me the print out of this the night before!) meant I really would be leaving. 2) spilling coffee EVERYWHERE in Madrid airport while trying to hold too much stuff and answer the phone (work - knew I would forget something!) that was really it. This huge metropolis of 19 million, the largest in the southern hemisphere, was one I'd planned to avoid. However, others had convinced me that its museums were not to be missed so I girded myself with low expectations and took yet another overnight bus. Coming from Ouro Preto, the overnight bus passed through mountains covered in lush vegetation and small towns. However, the next morning, it took us an hour of driving through a depressingly gray urban landscape to arrive at the San Paulo bus station, the largest in South America. At times we were surrounded on all sides by hideous concrete towers--this didn't seem promising. Yet the bus station was connected to the metro--a sure sign of a well-planned transportation system. Supposedly, San Paulo's urban bus system is the world's most complex with over 15,000 ... read more

Saturday 2nd October 2010 A six hour bus to Sao Paulo went quickly thanks to Stephen Fry reading us our first Audio-book, Harry Potter (thanks Suz & Jon x). After a couple of Metro Trains we arrived a Saci hostel & decided to get on with our day and go straight for a walk. We headed toward the football stadium to see if we could catch a game, but as we approached we could hear the raucous cries from the crowd and arrived just as the game was finishing. We made our escape back up the hill to avoid being enveloped in a crowd with thousands of fans. Take away pizza for dinner was pretty awful, as was the in-house entertainment which sounded like a cat being strangled, so we departed to find some nightlife in ... read more

We decided that as much as we both like the beach it really was time to move on and indulge in a little culture. We headed to Sao Paulo, the business centre of Brazil's booming economy. With only 2 nights here we had to fit in as much as possible during our short stay.  We went to a local samba night in Vila Madalena, where we were staying. The night was recommended to us by Tulio our informative hostelier. He promised a fun and authentic party, which was certainly delivered. The music played by a live band was brilliant. We never knew a tambourine could be played so well (it was truly a replacement for the drums). The place was packed with locals which was a good thing but also meant that as samba novices we ... read more

We arrived in Brazil and our luck was up and down for the first night after getting off the plane, the first thing we saw was McDonald's, bonus McChicken meal thankyou very much. As we had got a plane at last minute I still had 145 Bolivianos left in my pocket and soon realised when nowhere in the airport would change them that I had a problem. Anyway I was sure somewhere in Sao Paulo would change them so I forgot about that problem, got a map from tourist information and headed on the airport dropoff bus to Sao Paulo (best way to get to and from the airport from central Sao Paulo). The woman at tourist information had told us to ignore Lonely Planet and keep clear of Republica, it was rough, so we took ... read more

Welcome to my first post. From now on, I will start to publish here some of trip preparation and my traveling idea. Firstly, this is not just traveling, otherwise I could just separate a 2 months vacation and walk around having a good time relaxing and come back better to daily way of life but, not. The intention is different. That’s a discovering trip. A trip to get involved and mixed within the world, a trip to become baptized as a world citizen, to brake all barriers between the stable society life and the pure adventure of being alive, of feeling the world as it really is; its culture, its nature, both human and not human aspects of existence. I remember now the first impulse to leave for discovering. It's been in my childhood somewhere in ... read more
