Hey everyone, The first couple of days in Rio were exciting to say the least. Well my flight to Rio was an extremely long flight. I think it worked out to be 11 hours. Altogether I was travelling a solid 24 hours between Dublin to London and then on to Rio. As I arrived I got to immigration and there was queue to go through. Of course for some bizarre reason I was the only one picked out of the queue and I was escorted into a back room. I was quite nervous now at this stage. I thought someone may have put some drugs in my bag or something llike that. I felt I was on "Banged up Abroad". Nuts! Anyway the authorities were questioning me about my travel plans and I told them. It ... read more

Mango Tree Hostel This is where we stayed for the first 5 nights of our journey. We arrived at 10pm on Thursday and we were met by Tracey at the reception. She gave us a tour of the hostel and explained the rules. For 5 days the Mango Tree was to become our home and with each day we became more comfortable. The room was perfect and we had air conditioning to keep us cool when it got too hot outside. Breakfast was the same every morning and was and served from 7:30-10:00am. Wi-Fi was available in the lobby and the internet was provided for free on three computers in a room upstairs. The hostel was very safe and had a bar open from 6pm-10pm. This was good as it meant noise was kept low at ... read more

Woke up this morning feeling a bit groggy after the few drinks last night. I don’t think the shoe shine guy would have got away to easily this morning! We had our usual breakfast of bread rolls, cheese and fruit and then relaxed a little around the hostel. The longer you stay in these places the more homely they become and when you see new faces you welcome them and chat for awhile. I met a sound guy from Uruguay who told me that the Uruguayans look at the Irish and feel as that they are a similar sized nation surrounded by larger more dominant countries we have something in common. We spoke through Spanglish (a hybrid of Spanish and English) about both of our countries. He had all his facts right about Ireland except, that ... read more

Adios Rio! We’ve now left Rio and we’re on the tropical Island of Ilha Grande(think Lost and you’re there - it’s amazing) but we’ll tell you about that in another blog - there’s lots more to update you on from Rio. If we had to sum Rio up in 5 words -, HOT, EXPENSIVE, COOL, THONGS and SKETCHY.I leave sketchy till last as this is probably the one we’ll remember Rio for being!! After I last wrote we went to the Maracana (girls this is the biggest football stadium in Brazil and holds 100k people). Not much to say about this - it was a football match and not a particularly good one at that - I was bored!!! This was on Thursday night and on Friday we went to the biggie - Christ the Redeemer ... read more

So the story goes….. I had to leave the hostel in search of a working ATM. The HSBC one around the corner was only giving out two’s and five’s and since in needed about 1000 Brazilian reals, getting them in those denominations was not going to work. Off I soldiered through Ipanema for an ATM and ended up having to walk very far to get one. I didn’t mind that much as it was a wonderful morning and it wasn’t too hot. On the way back to the hostel as I passed under some tree’s I had the misfortune of a bird going to the toilet on my sandals. I thought not so bad, at least it wasn’t on my hair or clothes. I crossed the street like some weirdo flicking my foot continuously like I ... read more

Ok so we headed outa Dublin airport eventually...both gald that we were finally in the air. Journey over wasn´t too bad, better than expected. We landed in Rio and was it hot, by the time we arrived at our hostel we were two toffe apples...very sticky. The first day we just hung out in Ipanema & Copacobana area, walking around getting a feel for the place. Chilled out on the beach that evening loving the fact that we weren´t in work. Second day we went to see Fluminese v Nacional in a Brazilian Cup game in Maracana Staduim, good to see but there was too few people there for the whole atmoshpere thing (my view cause she´s a girl and doesn´t get it!!) .. the stadium is amazing holds 115,000 seated but they only allow 90,000 ... read more

Well we’re finally here. Months of talking and planning are finally over. Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the ride. Our 9 month cultural development course has begun! Dublin We woke up at 4:00am having to catch the shuttle bus at 4:30am to the airport. One problem though. I wasn’t feeling good. In fact I was feeling real bad. For the first time in my life I got a stomach bug. I honestly cant ever remember getting one before. I tried to deny it but soon I was getting fairly sick down the toilet. Both my parents had caught the bug over the last few days and were forced to stay in bed it was so bad. This obviously couldn’t happen to me. I thought once I had got sick maybe that was it ... read more

We’ve arrived, and in true Brit fashion we managed to burn ourselves on the first day! Whoop! My feet are now blistering and Steve’s back is looking nasty! But we’ve had an amazing couple of days (well apart from today but more of that in a bit). Steve is sat in a hammock opposite me at the mo, drinking beer! Sorry, it’s true! We arrived to boiling heat, it’s been in the low 30’s every day and coming from Plymouth it’s taking some getting used to. Our Hostel is really nice, one block from Ipanema beach!! And thank god not everyone looks like Gisele - in fact the whole thong bikini thing is fascinating - I just can’t stop starring - people that would shop in Evans in the UK in thongs! I love it - ... read more
